From www.artofproblemsolving.com:
"Many avid students have a difficult time finding a community of peers with whom to share their joy of discovery and thirst for learning. Through the Art of Problem Solving Community, we hope to provide a place for those students to congregate and provide each other the valuable sources of learning, support, and excitement that will inspire and encourage the students to learn more.
Currently, members of the Community may collaborate through our online forum, which allows problem solvers around the world to share their experiences. Members may also participate in our periodic moderated problem solving sessions, the Math Jams. Finally, through our online classes, members can hone their problem solving skills by learning from experienced instructors and working with equally motivated students.
We welcome any and all additions to our community - each student, teacher, parent, and problem-solving enthusiast who joins becomes a potential advisor, collaborator, instructor, and friend to the rest of our members.

Basically,
aops is a LiveJournal community for members of the Art of Problem Solving community. Here we'll talk about random things, undertake in writing the "AoPS Saga", and generally work together as a community. Hey, we might even discuss a math problem or two - but in general, we'll leave that for the various problem solving forums hosted by The Art of Problem Solving.
