Please let me know someone's reading this. Don't make me hunt down a hit counter!! ;)
chumleyyou can have a good laugh. I found a copy of L: Change the WorLd at a Dollar-Tree type store here. It helps that my friend Jessica is an L freak...anyway, it's clearly bootleg as the movie is spread out over two disks, no special features, and subtitles...in Korean. But hey, parts of the film are in English right! Nice to see Ryuuk again, even if the story itself was very sugary.
Yet more bits: Jessica tells me I've lost weight already, and I thanked her but I do believe her. Now that the worst of the red tide has passed my jeans are fitting looser than ever before. I bought a shirt today but it was more out of sucking up to the shop owners than any real need for the shirt--plus size clothing here comes with truly obscene prices.
lunakittenyou may be getting the begging for Torrid sooner rather than later. You can officially consider this begging for my wubby. The weather's getting cool at night and I would so love to have it--you need Paypal funds for the shipping costs?
Pictures loading at the moment so give me a little time to finish this entry. I hope I can find lithium AA's as I failed to bring the harddrive and am loading directly from Nikon to Photobucket. Among them, a movie poster as evidence for KMAH (Korean Men Are Hot), and a photo proving to all you American guys with Japanese schoolgirl fetishes that real is better than manga and Korean girls are at least as adorable. And probably cleaner...

vesta_venus's thoughts on the constant onslaught of people explaining that why women don't belong in politics.
I have almost no respect for Palin's political views. In fact, I think most of what she stands for is downright abhorrent. I also rather think that she and her advisor's were the ones who threw her daughter into the limelight (which is not fair for her daughter). But I would like to wave the LART clue-bat at the people who are complaining that she has no business being in politics because of her children. |

Politics (US): Providing a link to pecunium's well-written post: Pilate was a governor.
Politics (Canadian): So October 14th as an election date. I will reserve my full anger until I find out the specifics of when and how accessibly advance polls are offered. Technically I am not observant enough for this to matter to me personally, but I am still nonetheless a little bit angry. After all, if I was prime minister I would not call an election on Christmas Day. |

Got home from work today and passed out. It's not that I didn't have enough sleep--though I haven't been sleeping all that well here so far--it's that the monthlies hit me hard this time. Fortunately that waited until after my last class of the day was over, but I still had to put in a couple of hours' prep time after lunch with a body and brain that effectively didn't work. Then walking home I was joined by the vice principal and a friend of hers--I tried to lag behind but they waited for me to be done meandering on the stairs. Sweet people, don't get me wrong, and I have to remember that at least in this one way Koreans are less heirarchal than Americans.
Spent probably an hour at Delphi (the coffee bar) reading the novel Imperium by Robert Harris, ( Perceptions ) |

I need to find an ESL site that I can actually post to, but in the meantime, something to share with teachers:
I can't take credit for this--that would be my native teacher Jung Ji-eun.
Word Twister A large felt board, or something reasonably soft that kids can stand and kneel on. Large cards with vocabulary words on them, printed large enough to read easily from a standing position. Laminated and, if you're using a felt board, with some Velcro on the back. A spinner (optional, we didn't use one)
Objective: Students should be able to rapidly visually recognize spoken vocabulary words.
Place a set of vocabulary word cards on the board in directions that are equally readable from either side of the board. One member of each student team stands in stocking feet at either side of the board. The caller then spins the spinner or otherwise choses a word, and says it out loud. The players must then step on or otherwise put a part of their body on the word. First player to indicate the correct word keeps his or her body part on that word; the other student concedes. Teacher/caller calls out each word in turn until one player has run out of body parts (feet, hands, elbows, knees, forehead!) with which to indicate words. Player marking the most words correctly wins for his or her team.

"Open a shell and type im gui"
Yes, it's funny because I'm twelve. Also it's funnier because I only realized what it sounded like after shouting it over the cubicle wall to the neighbour whom I was trying to help.
But really, does anybody *want* to know their co-workers in that much detail? |

the more likely one is to splash hot chocolate on it.
*headdesk*.
oh well, I tried to de-stain with water. If it is still discoloured when it dries I can duck home and put o the other dressy shirt.
The hot chocolate wasn't even special enough to spill. I had high hopes going to a new place (Leonidas), but I could just as easily have gone to Timothy's or Bridgehead. Price was slightly higher I think.
Leonidas also sells actual chocolates. The two I tried were tasty but nothing to cross town for. Stubbes is much better. Leonidas is much better than Godiva though.
Speaking of chocolates, I have a mosaic box from Suite 88 in Montreal that I will have to post photos of, so that I can let people break into them with impunity. |

The school loaned me a laptop but it has seen better days, and even with the right software won't play my movies. The speakers are too dinky to be much of a music player, and the Internet's not hooked up yet. But for a deck of cards it would be completely useless. I hate to be ungrateful, but I have to think about something else to entertain myself.
Especially since next weekend will be a major holiday here, the equivalent of Thanksgiving, everything will be closed. (See previous entry for details on the holiday.) Without at least a DVD player I'm going to go stark raving nuts, so I have to take care of that this weekend.
It sucks to be de facto illiterate.
Wasn't at Delphi tonight--Hero from HandsKorea met up with me and paid for dinner, that fancy barbeque place up the street. I peeked at the menu and the prices while not cheap are still not bad if you're dining with friends. Out of the question alone( schtuff ) ...The difference is the Koreans then dip the whole thing in this nice little sour sauce.
Off to surf the web a bit before bedtime. |

TheWhimsicalOne has an extra ticket to some united Way reception tomorrow night and invited me. Apparently the dress code is "business casual". It's right after work, so I'll be going straight from. I now have an item in my calendar in the morning titled "Are you wearing business casual today? If not go home and change!"
Which begs the question of what constitutes business casual. I'm assuming that slacks (not denim - and being womens clothing of COURSE containing no pockets) and a dressy shirt/blazer will count.
About the only saving grace is that TheWhimsicalOne will have to dress up too (her business casual is usually something like mine - jeans and quiet shirts). |

| Went to bed too late last night |
[Sep. 3rd, 2008|08:54 pm] |
So I was yawning most of the day...and yet I put some notes in my 'brain' (the little 3x5 folder I keep in my purse) and I want to write much of that tonight, even if it makes me late for bed again.
Went to the immigration office today...ugh. Take a number, come back in an hour, which we did. Handed them the paperwork, and thankfully my co-teacher had my folder with my passport photos in it because I sure didn't. The trouble is in order to process the papers they needed my passport...for two weeks. Usually only one, and possibly still just one--I swear, one has to be very adaptable here. Originally I thought I'd have third graders at a hagwon--now I have fifth and sixth graders at a public school. Better, but still kind of unpredictable. As for the passport it's not like I'd expected to hop off to Tokyo or Bangkok this week, I just really hate not having the passport in hand. It's a big holiday here starting next week,

Not ignoring all you folks, just kind of taking the night off. Okay, not quite true...e-mails to a local friend, to the recruiters who got me here, and a chat session with one of the In Nomine players. I'm typed out for the night.
Got an old laptop to use at home, though no Internet there yet. Still, can play music now (speakers are dinky but I can get something for that), haven't tried movies yet and desperately hope that laptop doesn't notice the zones, recharged the mp3 player, otherwise bringing some noise into the home.
Funny--when I first moved in it seemed the neighborhood had no animals, no birds, and no smells. Not a problem the past couple of days, even the day leading up to the rain. Wonder why that is--my presence cannot have had the whole neighborhood holding its breath, not the dogs and cats and birds at least! The smells I figure the rain...I wonder about my perceptions. Information overload?
p.s. I know movies are not fair on this count--and honestly the real life guys on the street are hotter--all the same a little Keefcake to entertain you with, under the cut.

[Sep. 2nd, 2008|12:49 pm] |
Okay, so it's not 'Engrish' in that it's not trying to be English, but it makes a neat pun. It's in the girls' bathroom however, so getting a picture is probably a bad idea.
But the toilet paper roll, the brand name on it: Bum Han. And it was empty (because there's a master roll outside, long story, but not because you were expected to use your han'.)
More at the PC room tonight. |

In lieu of real content, I offer you all a game of broken telephone.
Each of the following song fragments has been sent on an expedition through Babelfish.
1. (English - Greek - French - Portuguese - English): Unknown feeling and you' the respect only, the meat and [kokkalo] for telephone. They take the receiver, I' l makes you a partisan. They take optimum, with peat bog to l' assay. The things to your chest must you confess. It will deliver, knows I' m to forgiver. [Prositotita] external part and faith of contact.
2. (English - German - French - Dutch - English): J' your voice, the same angel hear sighing. I n' does not have choices, I hear your voice. Believes as flies. I close oh the god whom I believe decreasing, the sky outside my eyes, I my eyes include. To hemelen m' to help. If you my name is same small request quotes, in down on I my knees want take, u. there in l' hour of midnight, I can believe to a straight line to your energy, such as a request you weet that maladivement you are taken there
3. (English - Italian - French - Spanish - English): Now I know I' ; IT SEES obtained to work, I' ; IT SEES obtained d' to obtain, you don' ; t really me l' ; it will want more. In order to return the things from right, it needs quelqu' one to judge to them narrow, and you' ; Ls think that l' ; amore is to request, but I' ; Mr. the spiacente don' ; the t requests this sense. Once you worked (j' they worked) I' now; ; the l moves away in you amore altered you' ; Dò SEES data everything ragazzo could lodar Prenda my ruptures and that' ; s not almost all the work of Oh… amore altered altered Amore
Hint 1: These are all eighties songs and/or songs most people would associate with being an eighties song Hint 2: There is a very, very mild thematic connection between the three, but it may be to tenous to be of real deciphering usefulness. |

On the thought from the address post--chopsticks. J style have pointy ends like the 'formal' ones you see back home, K style have flat ends which are a little harder to maneuver. Just ask my dress pants! Trying to eat chicken on a kebab with chopsticks wasn't the brightest thing I've ever done.
Back at com.enjoy, in the smoking section with 'Dong Suh' tea next to me. Mental note, the smoking section gets you tea. Smoking is considered unfeminine here so while I have the pack of Camel Crush in my pocket I'm not sure I want to break them out anywhere but here, and right now I have enough secondhand smoke I don't need to light anything.
Sounds of machine-gun fire behind me; somebody's shooting some digital bad guys back there.
I'm tired, have been since at least Sunday morning. Having the cable out doesn't help, as it's much easier for me to sit still with a movie in front of me. Work is arranging a computer for home, probably a used school computer but I certainly won't argue. The price I was quoted for a cable/Internet package was about 15k won a month! Prices here are like that, some things ridiculously low, some things close to American or even a bit high. I'm thinking like 1k won is about a dollar but that's not exact, as I cashed in my last thirty bucks and got 32k won and change. It's not my last money ever, just the last that is readily accessible at the moment. Thank heavens most places take my bank card, contrary to what the travel sites said.
I think my digestive system has figured out that I'm not just trying out Korean food and has begun to rebel. Folks here are still amazed that I don't find the spices intolerably hot, but the cooking does remind me somewhat of Cajun food but not as hot as Cajun and with a slightly greener taste.
I miss reading materials in English in a bad way. You know me, used to read the LA Times every day. I have two books with me and an IE Weekly and that will only go so far. There's the net here sure, but that's not a relaxing read, never really has been. I asked the counter help at Delphi 'if' they had anything to read in English, and now I'm curious how far they'll go to get something.
My lovely manicure is chipping away and I'm having a terrible time finding polish remover. Oops.
Did invest in a big fluffy pink blanket today, as part of the sleep deprivation today was waking up to rain which was just a wee bit chilly. I'll try it out tonight. Still don't know why pink. I need curtains pretty badly. I'd tack bedsheets over the windows but, um, you can't find bedsheets here to save your life. You sleep on and under light quilts. I found one shop Saturday night who could get me curtains but I didn't have measurements with me. Maybe tomorrow, don't feel like it tonight. Babelfish has proven somewhat useful. While its translations aren't good enough for anything really serious, it has helped out in one or two instances. chumley imagine Riley from the Boondocks carrying a big sword...that's what's on the card they're using to meter my computer time. Is that cool or what?
Anyway, gotten distracted. I'll check in again tomorrow.
p.s. animachina , if you want to know what video games are popular in this town, remind me how to screen capture and I'll send them. Is it shift/print screen, or alt/print screen? |

| The address post |
[Sep. 1st, 2008|07:56 pm] |
Sorry it took so long to get this out!
I have already picked up gifts for my neices and one or two other people (Mindy I have your rock), but it appears I share a mailbox. In theory that is safe--it is a ridiculously polite society and not a very private one--but in practice I'm a little worried about it. I'm going to talk to the school tomorrow about where to have packages delivered, and I'll get you my mailing address once that's nailed down.
If you want me to send you something, please post your address and wish list below. Contrary to what I thought it's not hard to get plastic bags, so if somehow that's your thing I've got you covered. ;) Keep in mind that while I can get some Japanese things here I can't get many, and it's socially dicey to go looking for them. "Hello Kitty" can be found at kids' shops, and there are J style chopsticks as well as K style-- they are different. I'll explain in the next post to allow open replies. This one, if I can figure out how, will lock posts so you're not giving your snailmail address to everybody. Though you may want to have a friend check, just to be sure. Setting all comments to Screened--I think that's how you do it? |

My co-teacher for sixth grade has asked me to hunt down some Disneyland pictures. Now I cooooould go to the official website, but so could any of them. But I know you...some of you have worked there, others...where did I put my pix?
Where did you put your pix? If you have any you're willing to share, it's best to e-mail me the link but I can work with you sending the actual pic too.
So pleeease, if anyone has Disneyland pictures they're willing to share, get them to me ASAP. |

| The world uncertain is. |
[Aug. 31st, 2008|10:51 pm] |
I'm home from Montreal. Had fun. Learned to play Pandemic (though I think making the plague-spreading variation that some of us were suggesting instead of the actual game would be entertaining. Why cure the plague when you can spread it?)
So now I'm catching up on news, er I mean LJ, er, same thing. And feeling somewhat depressed about the state of the world.
I'm not Thomas, so no need to suggest I say farewell Earth's bliss. But a clue stick to shake at numerous parties, particularly those involved in North American politics and policies would be nice. And that's mostly just having heard the news on the US side with only a smattering of Canadian mixed in. |
