Okay, I just had to join this community, I couldn't resist. While I agree Keanu is wrong wrong wrong for Constantine, I have to admit I didn't hate the movie. I only became a Hellblazer fan afterwards, so I suppose that helped. However, I think Paul Bettany would have been perfect! So here I present my humble pic :)

Okay. Ignoring the fact that I photoshoped out the damned ashtray, you have to admit.

It's a hell of a lot closer to what Poor Constantine should have been.

Look. Just LOOK at that attitude.

And look at him smoking. Like CONSTANTINE SHOULD. Although, maybe there should be three or four more...

*waves*

I vote for Joe Flanigan (John Sheppard on Stargate: Atlantis), but it could just be because I'm desperate to see him cast in a part involving a leather trenchcoat.

I do think he'd've been good, though. Constantine in the comics looks a lot like him apart from hair color.

Hi everyone!
I was purusing around and stumbled on this community and couldnt resist its awesome power of anti-keanu-ness ;)
I dont know about anyone else- but watching Constantine hurt my soul.

Funny story though: One night a while ago, my older brother and I were drinking and we started ranting on about how so many people would've done a better job (at the time we thought even Tim Roth would've been better- but way too short though) and we'd sorta joke around and say, "Such and such would make a better John Constantine than Keanu" (such and such varied from actual people- to things like inanimate objects) So in the midst of all this ranting- I declared that my 40 ounce bottle of Olde English malt liquor would make a better John Constantine- then proceded to draw on a face...then add a cigarette.

I dunno, I think he looked alright as a bottle of OE :)

I just thought I'd share a story.
take care!

The angels and demons were amazing, Gabriel in particular. Boffo casting on the supporting players.

Rachel Weisz was okay--kind of one-note but it was an appropriate note.

I like Keanu, but I'm sorry I'm with you--he was wrong for the role. Too clean, too young-looking. John may have been forty, but he was forty years and two hundred miles of bad road, which Reeves is 'just' forty. I can live with the change in setting--I can even live with a twenty-year old Chas. Alas...

Spoiler alert!

I actually liked the writing. Dangerous Habits being my favorite story I liked the way it got folded into something more conventional, bringing up the 'Prophecy'-like plot into something uniquely Hellblazer. Still...more grizzled, more asshole, more emotive. Keanu has his strengths, but damaged-messiah isn't one of them. Neo was simply messiah--John was deeply damaged.
The writing had nice chewy moments, some of them felt wasted. Like Angela asking if she needed to take all her clothes off--J.C. would have been more openly lecherous.

Alas, a movie needs an A-list "Name" to open a picture with, someone like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise whose name alone will sell tickets. Ignoring that rule I'd have gone with Michael Madsen (my husband says Guy Pierce). Going with that rule (and the millions of dollars it represents), you've got a very short list and Keanu was the least inappropriate.

Hope nobody minds my spouting off too much--it was an almost-great movie.

But I find it humorous to know that Roger Ebert only gave Constantine one and one-half stars.

That's right ... not even two complete stars.

In other news, Son of the Mask received one and one-half stars from Ebert.

I'm new here, weirdly enough because of that 'Interests' quizlet that's going around...I started, in complete frustration, a community called ban_constantine and then, weeks later, discover you're doing the same thing. Since there's only two...three?...folks on my list, wanna join forces? :) I'll happily point 'em over here...

My personal choice, beyond Not Keanu? Paul Bettany. He's got that lovely raw-boned English look, 'cos he is, he's naturally blond, he's a great actor...and he's tall, which in some things, counts. In Constantine, definitely.

So...h'lo, all, I'll be dipping in and out as I can, catching up with the rants of the past.

Did you know that Constantine was modelled on Sting in the first place? If you think of the yobbo he plays in Quadrophenia it begins to make sense...

However, since Sting is now a)quite aged; b)a crap actor; and c)a total adult-contemporary sellout, I would humbly suggest James Marsters. He might not appreciate the type-casting, but it's such a yummy type, after all.

Daniel Radcliffe would have been good for Tim at one point but is now looking far too healthily heart-throbby. Tim should look sort-of underfed and snivelly, in my opinion. I will keep thinking about a suitable alternate.
