Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help

WESTON, Wis. — An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Here's the crazy part:

The girl has three siblings, ranging in age from 13 to 16, the police chief said. "They are still in the home," he said. "There is no reason to remove them. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."

I guess they don't consider it a problem unless those kids get diabetes as well? *shakes head*

This is the line that gets me:

The mother believes the girl could still be resurrected, the police chief said.

She's mentally unstable people! Take the kids away! :P

Nah, the reporter's quoting the parents, who figure that if they had only loved god enough, their daughter's pancreas would have kicked back into gear.

That makes me sick.

I mean, sure, if you think that you're so special that you don't need to seek medical help, just pray and Jezuz will help you, go ahead. But don't force innocent children to lose their lives over your stupidity.

I forgot where I read it, but I love the line
"there are no xtian children, just children of xtian parents"
because it is so true.

My dad had a cousin die because her folks were JW's and wouldn't allow her to have a transfusion.

Assholes. It caused a huge rift in the family.

These stories are everywhere if one looks.

This privileging of religion over the rest of the world has got to stop. If any other parent neglected their kids to the extent that they DIED, the world would be up in arms. But this gets brushed of as "oh, they have faith, so it's okay". I'm not even a parent, and I can't imagine SITTING THERE doing nothing while a child withers away and dies. I can't understand that at all.

They weren't "doing nothing" - they actually believed that this would cure her. It's just sad all around. If you want someone to blame as the root of the problem: I would shoot Pat Robertson in the head - and everyone like him.

They spew "evidence" of faith-healing all the time - convincing people like this that it works. It's just as bad if they were selling a medicine that they SAID would cure, but doesn't. The person selling the "medicine" is just as culpable as those buying it...if not more...because the charlatan's know it's bullshit.

Our government here took away three of six babies from JW's because they would have refused them life saving blood transfusions:

I'm happy they did this, but sorry they couldn't save the other two.

This is America. The very first line of the Bill of Rights is pretty clear:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

Should we really blame the sheep when we invited the shepherd?

Honestly, people. Where is your faith!?! Don't you believe in anything? I don't think God would have much of a problem with the sacrifice of this little girl for all the faith, prayer, and reverence they probably showed Him. Besides, she's in Heaven now! It's the ultimate sacrifice for the parents. Although, she was just a little girl. Practically worthless.

Of course, He probably would have liked it a bit more if her parents had a big BBQ after she died. Not sure if they should serve lamb or veal for that burning flesh thing.

Yeah, I think a bare minimum of a voluntary manslaughter charge against Mom and Dad is necessary here.

Stories like this - people dying because they refuse basic, life saving procedures like transfusions - always bring to mind the double standard of organized religion. We (outsiders, non believers, atheists) can't interfere in their religion, but they can force us (non believers) to live by certain tenents of their religion. (the pledge of allegiance, religious holidays like easter, doctors and pharmacists claiming it is against their religion to dispence birth control, the morning after pill, certain female operations.)

The problem is that we have a weird form of slavery in place until you turn 18, not that child services didn't find the child another slave master.

Let the kid decide if she wants to live.
