the "exciting announcement"
Anyone who took yesterday's 4-1 odds would have won if I had actually taken wagers; the announcement is that book three (no title as of yet) will be released 23/09/08, but that CP will indeed need four books to finish the series.

Full press release here, and at 5pm EST today they'll post a video of CP talking about it.

Discuss.

ETA: the video's up (but I don't have time to summarize for those who tend to lose consciousness at the sound of CP's voice, sorry).

So it'll be a four-part trilogy?
Now poor Douglas Adams is rolling in his grave.

Oh, noes! A fourth book? Jeez, what more has to happen? And now he has to come up with a clever six-letter title that starts with the letter "E". Hmm, that's is going to be difficult...

(Okay, excuse my snarkiness, but I just woke up.)

At least.

Remember movie sequelitis? Milking the franchise for every penny until you get a sequel that doesn't sell?

Be prepared for sequel after sequel to Eragon (from The Bestselling Child Prodigy) until the sales of the last start to tank. After all, it's all he knows how to write.

Arrrgghhhhh. This not only sucks for all of mankind, but also for whatever potential Paolini ever had as an actual writer. Chugging away on this piece of shit series for decades is no way to grow as a writer. He's got to MOVE ON!

Either he's been talking to George R.R. "Ok Guys, One More Book!" Martin, or he's been reading Douglas Adams and feels like being clever. Either way, the Inheritance Cycle is going to reeeeeally suck. It was bad enough having Edlest as the trilogy's halfway-point, with its sucky boring stoylines and deus ex machina character development, but now Eragon, despite being an uber half-Elf rider, needs two more (probably 700+ page) books to defeat Galbatorix? Man, that's a joke.

On the upside, the book isn't going to be published for nearly another year (editing nightmare, perhaps?), so the fans are going to be hopping mad...

Nooo! Not a tetralogy.

What can he possibly do? Either we'll get a rehashed Return of the Jedi spread out over two books, or he'll just use it for one. I hope that doesn't imply that he'll start looking at Episodes I-III for inspiration.

Oh I can already see Brom being Galbatorix's mentor and the original Eragon demanding to teach a young Galbatorix the way of the dragon rider.

Yep it'll suck.

Except Brom's younger than Galbatorix, and all signs point to the first Eragon having lived a relatively short life. Though less plagiarism won't really make it any less bad...

Think of all the poor trees that will be cut... for two more bricks (each probably 700 pages long). Seriously, how much more needs to be covered that wouldn't fit into just one book... with major editing for all the unnecessary stuff he will stick in? But it will be sad... he'll be in his thirties by the time the fourth brick comes out. He could have moved on to maybe better writing that might have been more original.

"plot points and unanswered questions" (?)
"too big to fit in one volume" (!?)

This has to be a joke, right?

Plot Points:
1) Eragon & Roran rescue Katrina
2) Eragon finds uber-sword
3) Eragon rescues third egg (hatches for Arya)
4) Murtagh breaks free from Galbatorix and dies
5) Something with "Well of Souls"
6) Battle of Urû'baen
7) Climactic duel with Galbatorix
8) Marriage with Arya
9) Happily ever after

Eldest had 71 chapters, so if each of these got 7 apiece (too many, at that), there would still be 8 left over for Nasuada and Roran POVs, without needing a fourth book, or even a longer third book.

The padding on this is going to exceed Eddings' Dreamers and by a far less talented writer.

I think you're right about the major plot points, except maybe #1. I think Katrina will die in the attempt to rescue her so Roran and Eragon can have some ANGST to prove that they're not sociopaths.

One side of me screamed out in agony, another side said : "That must mean there is more to mock for a few years forth, yippie".
Either Paolini has mysteriously realized he is hopelessly unoriginal and made an honest attempt at adding something of his own, or it's going to be even more smeared out butter on white bread.

There's going to be four books coming out now? You have got to be kidding me, CP! He just lost another point in his favor in my book: the fact that he'd planned to write only three books and that was it, no more of the stupid things. He's fallen prey to the Endless Fantasy Series Disease. At least Martin has a good reason to prolong his series: there are just so many viewpoints that he couldn't fit them all into one book for the fourth one. Eldest was bad enough. I hate to imagine what the next two books are going to be like.

Let's see

1. They're going to have loads of superfluous description about places and Arya
2. Eragon will pass out at least twenty times in each book
3. The "plot" will be Return of the Jedi stretched out over two books so it'll be harder to accuse him of plagiarism (CP- I wrote FOUR books not THREE so I couldn't possiblyhave copied George Lucas)
4. The Ra'zac will be defeated at the end of book 3, and Galbatorix at the end of book 4
5. Katrina will die when they attempt to rescue her, giving Eragon and Roran an excuse to ANGST
6. The Varden shall suffer a defeat in book 3, but don't worry Eragon/Roran will pull a magical solution out of their asses and keep the important rebels like Nasuada from being captured though they'll have to re-group
7. Surda will be sacked as a result of point 6 which gives Our Heroes more excuses to ANGST
8. Oromis and Galedr will die either sometime late in book 3 or the beginning of book 4
9. The weapon under the Menoa Tree and the Vault of Souls will be each be used in one of the books as a Deus Ex Machina plot device. My guess is that the sword under the Menoa Tree will be used in book 3 and the Vault of Souls in book 4.
10. After their capture by the Raz'ac, Saphira will be raped by Murtagh's dragon. After she and Our Heroes escape, Arya will comfort her with "Oh you poor dragon, I would have been raped in prison too, but the author didn't want me to be a less than perfect Love Interest for his idiot hero!" This will make Saphira realize that she was Wrong to Be Jealous of Arya and she'll tell Eragon that Arya really is Right For Him.
11. There will be climactic battles at the end of book 3 and book 4.
12. Sometime after 10, Arya will confess her love for Eragon, they'll screw each other, then they'll be divided by a Big Misunderstanding late in book 3, then make up by the end of book 4.

I wonder how many of these will actually come true. Anyone want to take some bets?

P.S. He should have learned from JKR's example. She said she was only going to write seven Harry Potter books and she kept to her word, despite the enormous success of the books. Then again, she did have a timeline structure, something which many other authors lack.

That's the only logical reason I can think of to explain this monstrosity.

Paolini: People are still accusing me of copying Star Wars? Well, guess what! Now I have four books, so all of your arguments are null and void? Whatcha going to now, huh? Yes, ask for forgiveness and I will be merciful!
Anti-fans: ... *still in brain-iz-dead-from-teh-awful mode*
