Trans Bashing on Fox News Channel Over Isis
Fox News (the gay & trans bashing network) can't seem to go a week without making provocative comments about the LGBT community. Click below to watch a video of Greg Jarrett anchor of Fox News discusses the upcoming show with Ian Drew of Us Weekly. Please contact fox and tell them to stop their trans-misogyny.

Thought y'all might be interested in this
This is something I posted to my live journal about a week ago:

Last week, just after I got my hair cut, I went out for some drinks. At one point I looked at myself in the mirror when I was in the toilets and was really quite shocked by how butch I looked. I was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, and I am putting on some weight, and I'd just had my hair cut so it was really short.

This has happened to me before, this shock at seeing how butch I look - and the feelings that follow it. 'That's not me', 'I'm not supposed to look butch, I'm supposed to look androgynous', 'I don't wanna look butch because it doesn't fit the feminine person I am inside' - those are all thoughts and feelings I've had.

This morning I was very miserable with myself. I've often had moods where I've thought 'it's shit being a man' but I've never felt it that strong before - I was actually thinking 'I hate being a man'.

And I was honestly contemplating gender reassignment surgery. The thought of it has always freaked me out before. I don't want to mess with my genitals because I'm quite attached to them. But for the first time I was thinking 'it wouldn't be that much of a big deal' and 'maybe I would be happier that way'.

I must have been pretty depressed to be thinking that way. I can't believe how calmly I was contemplating it - usually I get all squeemish and protective of my beloved cock-and-balls. It probably doesn't mean anything though - I was very depressed so maybe it was akin to thoughts of suicide. I wasn't exactly in a state of mind where i felt very kindly towards my own person or my body anyway.

Thoughts about 'would i be happier if people treated me like a woman?' made me conclude that actually I don't want to be treated like a woman or like a man. I'd rather be totally exempt from gendered assumptions, gendered expectations and gendered treatment. I want to be treated like me. I am a complicated mixture of masculine and feminine traits - I don't want to be treated like a man or treated like a woman - I want to be simply treated like a human being. So it's probably more of a gender role issue than a gender identity issue. Unless my gender identity is androgynous/non-gendered.

I thought a lot of extremely genderqueer things today though. I thought things such as 'I hate gender!' - which is a bit odd. Maybe I'm just fed up.

    NEW COMMUNITY PROMO: [info]cd_signots
Are you a significant other of a crossdresser or a crossdresser who wants advice from significant others of crossdressers? Then check out my new community [info]cd_signots. I created this community because there are loads of communities for crossdressers, transgendered, and polygendered people, but not many that are just for the significant others. If you know someone who might be interested in this community, please let them know.

    Thanks!

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student

    Queer Liberationist or Gay Assimilationist?
There are two opposing political viewpoints when it comes to advocacy and than of course there are a variety of more moderate middleground opinions that fall in between the Queer Liberationists and Gay Assimilationist camps.

Gay Assimilationists - This ideology is to make gay/lesbian people seem like average, normal everyday citizens in the eyes of the general public. They want to make the case that gay families deserve equal rights and recognition and they want what everyone else wants: a house with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids. Some Gay Assimilationists are not inclusive of Bisexuals or Transgender people because they feel these groups hurt the gay rights movement. This is not the case for all Assimilationists and many seek to include all LGBT people and create a sense of assimilation into the general society. Gay Assimilationists often seek to advance their agenda through corporate sponsorships and see getting big business and government on their side as a way to advance equality. The assimilationists strive to paint the LGBT community as being no different than the heterosexual world and just want to fit in. They want the rights to marriage, the rights to adoption, to serve freely and openly in the military. Part of achieving these means, Gay Assimilationists seek to tone down the sexual aspect of gay pride, they feel that sexuality is one component of gay relationships and seek to emphasize much more the loving, financial, community, and faith based aspects of LGBT relationships.

Queer Liberationists - This camp of political theory views gender and sexuality in non-conformist ways. They do not apologize for the differences of Queer individuals and do not seek to "fit in". They embrace the idea of "We're Here, We're Queer, Get Used to it!" and believe society must change to accept them rather than they change to mold into hetero-normative society. Queer Liberationists are often but not always concerned with Queer issues as they relate not only to LGBT people but also to capitalism, anti-militarism, sexism, racism and other aspects of social justice. They are less concerned with same-sex marriage, adoption, and don't ask don't tell. Many times but not always they are against the institution of marriage altogether, feel gays are liberated from the idea of raising kids, and are against gays serving in the military because they are anti-military to begin with. Queer Liberationists often disagree with the idea of corporate partnerships and having big business and government intervene in LGBT issues. Queer Liberationists do not seek to hide their sexuality and gender expression, they seek to embrace it and encourage what has conventionally been frowned upon as inappropriate.

These are two diametrically opposed political camps. Most people have various opinions that don't fall so heavily into one party or the other. Where do you lie and what are your thoughts?

Free Speech Where do We Draw the Line?
A few interesting and controversial headlines have popped up in the news and the gay blogosphere that raise some important questions. At what point is gay activism intruding upon free speech and freedom of expression rights? Freedom of speech and expression must be protected even for anti-gay forces, because if we don't have these basic freedoms it becomes a slippery slope and eventually we will not have the right to express our opinions.

I write this in light of some stories recently, such as a student who wore a t-shirt to school saying "Be Happy - Not Gay!" at a diversity event, who got in trouble. The courts have since ruled she is entitled to wear the shirt.

What about Crystal Dixon's case with the University of Toledo V.P. of Human Resources who outside the university wrote an opinion column denouncing homosexuality, claiming it is a choice. She has been fired under grounds that she mentioned she was a worker at the school and is now suing the school.

Finally there was the case at Smith College, where the College Republicans brought in Ryan Sorba who created a book called "The Born Gay Hoax" who spoke about bogus research regarding LGBT people. Students interrupted his anti-gay speech by screaming "We're Here, We're Queer, get used to it" the student protesters overwhelmed the room forcing Mr. Sorba to leave the campus and cancel his speech.

Youtube clip of the Smith protest:

What do you think about GLBT activism and where do we draw the line to ensure free speech rights, or is it okay to intrude upon the free speech of others when they seek to intrude on our civil liberties and spread falsehoods about our community?

"Voices Against 377" - Human Rights for Singapore!
‘Voices Against 377 is a coalition of Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) and progressive groups based in Delhi. It is a point of intersection and dialogue between various social movements that these groups represent, where a united voice is being articulated against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalizes private consensual sexual acts deemed to be against the order of nature.

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code is cited below:

    “377. Unnatural Offences.
Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

The law penalizes certain sexual acts equally. For example oral sex, regardless of whether it is heterosexual or homosexual; even penile-masturbation of one person by another – is considered criminal. Although facially neutral, the law has effectively stigmatized and criminalized a section more than others, namely same-sex desiring people, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT), hijra, kothi and other Queer people. The law has been used by the police to intimidate same sex desiring people and has been a source of serious human rights violations."

Take action on the issue sign the petition:

Hope for Trans Community With New DSM - V?
The APA has released a statement to activists who have emailed and called concerning the APA Diagnostic Statistical Manual. Activists have been very concerned over some people appointed to the committee who are very transphobic and who would likely keep the label "Gender Identity Disorder" even though moden research shows transgender people are just as healthy as everyone else in the population and are NOT disordered! The Gender Identity Disorders task force, is chaired by Peggy T. Cohen Kettenis, Ph.D. who is rumored to be TG friendly.

This being said our work is not done, Dr. Kenneth Zucker head of the entire Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders committee is very transphobic and believes in "reparative therapy" for transgender children.

    Yo Ho Ho, etc.
I've been reading David Cordingly's Life Among The Pirates, and lo and behold, there's a chapter devoted to women pirates (and, for good measure, Pirates' Women). it follows in some depth, the lives of two women who became pirates - and masqueraded as men to do so (at a time when it was largely a complete no-no to have women on board pirate ships). Their stories, such as we have them, are rather astounding, so I thought I'd share...Enjoy! I've crossposted this in a couple of other gender-based communities, since I went to all the trouble of writing it, and it's an awesome story, I figured I should share it around. Apologies if it appears a couple of times on your f'list.

I'm going to compile an informal listing of radfems under 35 (born post-1970) because academia (or as Mary Daly would say: academentia) thinks or hopes us folk are going the way of the dinosaur.

So if you're a rad fem born 1970 or later, could I get a comment? Just give your username, or a nickname, or your real name. And if you know any authors, singers, activists, etc. who are radfem and under 35, could you give us their name. And maybe a little bio for both categories if you like, or a wee manifesto or whatnot.  And do you/your rad fems you list identify as 2nd or 3rd wave?

This is not meant to belittle older radfems in any wany, shape, or form. They're more than welcome to comment too, but please state you're older than 35, so i don't count you as a "young" rad fem.

Also, please post this other rad fem/feminist communities, blogs, etc. Let's get this thang going!

LJ Study - survey on psyc, sex, identity, and lj
    Hi.

I am doing a research study on how people use livejournal. I am interested in public, locked, and private posts and what people write in what kind of entries. Also, I want to understand more about how people express their identity and their sexuality in their livejournals. If you are 18 or older, American and interested in filling out my survey (10-30 minutes), please follow this link: http://www.oeducationalevents.com/LJa.HTM

I will not be able to reply to all comments on lj, so if you have a question about my survey or something, please email me directly.

in response to Day of Silence
who am I? today, I am self-expression. I stand for the darkness and for the light, and for the colors I can only dream of. I represent the thoughts and feelings that don't always translate to words.
but what I am also is compassion and community and communication. I have seen and felt the ache of the left unsaid, and I don't want to honor it. silence is as much a weapon as a spat slur.
so today I call for disarmament. I ask, in place, to complete some small act of sharing. to reveal a secret, to heal a broken friendship, or to have a conversation with a stranger (and the list goes on). instead of sitting down in solitude with the known hurt of the past, instead of trying to show you a wound that cannot be understood, I am finding new words today.
