What is with the TRUTH commercials? I mean REALLY. I don't know about you, but I am a smoker. yes it's a disgusting dirty habit and when I have kids I'll tell them not to smoke...or tehy'll end up like mommy with respitory infections, smelly hair, nails and teeth. But, at the same time, I know that if my kids are going to smoke...hey they are going to smoke. I got the "no smoking" talk a lot as a child. When I was 4 I stopped people in the grocery stores buying cigarettes and told them my mommy quit smoking for me. Now, 15 years later, I smoke heavily. But isn't that MY choice? I'm an adult, right? I know it's gross and bad for me. The TRUTH commercials don't make me want to quit at all. It's not lack of education about smoking that helps me to continue with this habit. Those commercials make it sound like smokers have no clue it's bad for them. DUH. We know it's bad. We didn't pick up a pack and say, "Hey! Stuff that hurts the first time you use it and makes you hack and smell bad! MUST BE GOOD FOR ME!" No. I started smoking out of sheer curiosity. I wanted to know what it was like. I saw everyone I knew smoking and I wanted to see why they did it. My first cigarette was horrible. But the buzz was good. One thing led to another and now I'm hooked. I'm not going to be one of those "I could quit anytime I wanted" people. Because, me, personally, I can't. I don't have the motivation to, really. May sound sad but it's true.
And what's with all these new smoking laws? I can't smoke in a bar in California? In some places I can't even smoke on the damn street? Now some places are telling me I can't smoke in my home? Hey, we smokers know you non-smokers don't want be around our smoke. That's fine. No problem. But for christ's sake let us have a place to smoke where you want bitch and moan at us all the time. It's legal. It's gross, yes. But a recent study by the National Health Association showed that second hand smoke is as about as likely to give you lung cancer as organe juice. I understand it irritates asthma. But, you know, you can avoid us smokers. If we're too close...move away. Hell, we have so little place we can smoke in public it shouldn't be THAT hard for you. But I have a right to smoke where it's legal to. Don't come up in my face and tell me "smoking kills, you know." No shit? Shut the fuck up. You hate smoking so much, why are you near me? If you ask nicely, and I'm too close to you, I'll move away. But don't be a dick about it. Just because I smoke doesn't mean I don't deserve some respect. I can't speak for most smokers, but I do ask people if it's ok if I smoke. If it's not, hell I can wait or take a little walk. No big deal. But if I'm sitting at a bus stop and I've moved well enough away from you to have a cigarette don't give me the third degree. We all put up with gross stuff around us. At least I'm being somewhat considerate.
