Guide to avoiding scams and other con websites



Even though there is a wide selection of music download shops to choose from, most novice users and even those familiar with online shops would not know how to determine which sites are genuine and which ones are not. Some scam and con websites claim that their services are legal since they effectively sell their ‘service’ and are not responsible for the music that is transferred through the ‘service’ they offer. For example, many scammers trick consumers into paying for freely available software such as Limewire, Winmx, iMesh, Kazaa and so on.


The following tips mention techniques that are generally only used by scammers and sites that falsely trick consumers into paying to access file sharing networks that are freely available. Use these before you enter your E-mail address, register or join a service or website, not to mention pulling out your credit card
  1. See if you can browse their music library. A few legitimate services such as iTunes require the user to download software first in order to do so, however there should be no need to subscribe first. A simple test is to try browsing their music service. If you keep getting presented with a page asking to join or register without being able to browse anything, then this is a clear sign of a scam.
  2. Check if you can download their software. Pretty much all legitimate sites I'm aware of allow the consumer to download the software without having to sign up first. A few examples include Real, Napster, iTunes and so on. The main purpose here is to get users to see if they can find their favourite music in their library. Any website asking to join or register just to download their software has been a scam in every case I have seen so far. Note that while Real appears to charge for their software to download it, they do have a limited free version available.
  3. Have a look for preview tracks. Pretty much all legal music services offer samples of their music in an aim to lure in customers. Most scam websites don’t offer any previews, let alone show a list of artists and titles they have.
  4. Find out the track pricing. Very few music services just offer an unlimited subscription service without selling songs individually. For example Napster offers an unlimited download service for a flat fee, but also charges one for individual songs in order to record them to CD or keep them permanently.
  5. Check the site for screenshots of their software, such as in the help section. Most legitimate sites show screenshots of how to use their software. Of course if you can download their software, then this step is not necessary.
  6. Finally, hover your mouse over the various tabs and links on the main page. If you keep seeing the same URL over and over for most links such as something ending with “/join.php”, then this is another clear sign of the site being a scam or con.
A very quick check that gives most scams away is to go to their homepage and compare the URL’s that show in the status bar when the mouse is hovered over the following links: “Download Now”, “Music”, “Movies” and “Get Access”. If these four (or which ever are present) all point to the same URL, then go elsewhere! If the status bar is hidden, then click on each of these links to see where they bring you to. If they all land you on a registration page, then avoid!

MP3downloadhq is a complete scam. I signed up for lifetime membership and was charged double what I agreed to. I have contacted them repeatedly but I never get any reply. Paid a lot of money and not a single download to show for it – AVOID!!!!!
Has anyone here used http://www.mp3sugar.net/ to buy music? At $1 per album, it seems like a great place to get music, but I'm looking for other ppl's experiences.

Just signed up today. Selection is great, allows you to select an entire album or the individual songs on that album which is really nice. Even has some non-mainstream music which is great for us that don't always want whatever is top of the pop charts.

2 years ago I purchased a lifetime membership through UltimateTVshows.com for mp3download.com. It was great while it lasted (I wished I knew it was free) Now when I try to log in I get a page thats says page does not exist and when I try to go to support I get the same page. However when I go to UltimateTVshows.com which a person can still reach, there they are trying to sell the same thing under another name. These people should be jailed while they are still operating on the web. Thank you RJ

I don't know about www.mp3sugar.com but it does make more since to be able to listen to what you want and buy it at a very good price then to get scamed for alot of music that is of poor quality and is not legal to start with. I know I'm going to look into this.

Yes I expect so, i've been using them for about a month and the site has been off-line a couple of times. However next day its usually there again. Of course bear in mind that its a Russian site, and I bet the mains electric in Russia isnt quite up to the reliability of the UK National Grid......

I expect it is legal, assuming you don't redistribute the songs you've downloaded. I'm guessing that the 10¢ it charges covers the royalties for a song (in Russia, at any rate).

BUT: it's surely making its money - and a TON of money, by the looks of things - from said spyware. I registered yesterday (on a Macintosh - which, being a minority community, used to be relatively immune to viruses, pop ups, etc.). I didn't stick money in the account since what I was really after was info about songs, artists, etc. The account asked my name, e-mail address (I gave an old spam ridden one), and country. That evening, when I went back for more geeky song info, there was a gigantic banner offering me lonely ladies in my area. I live in a relatively remote hamlet in the British countryside. This advert, however, had managed to trace three villages within nine miles of my home.

I can only assume that MP3Sugar now has details of my computer's IP address, and has managed to cross reference it - and/or my compromised e-mail address - with other people's (probably Apple's) databases from which they swiftly extracted my postal address. This sort of activity is certainly NOT LEGAL. And I find it downright creepy.

I guess I must now attempt to clean out some of this spyware. Any suggestions, Mac users out there, for a good (cheap or free) product to do this?

I use mp3sugar for almoust a year now.Never had any problems at all.I was surprized by the prices,i don't know what to think about it.I pay i get my songs.All that i wish is that part of the money are going into royalties.I so wish that,cause I'm not sure that in russia they have a copyright law,or something.

I have found a reliable site called allofmp3.com albums are a bit more, like $1.20 or $1.50 depending on the size, but I've used them for 2 months and they're reliable... I highly recommend them. -IanWolfe (my name on Winmx)

Don't be fooled by the fact that you are paying for music on the many Russian MP3 sites. Read the small print of the agreement and you will see "...do not use this service if it is in conflict with legislation of your country". These Russian sites hold no licenses with the publishers... For example: allofmp3.com lists a few (not many) Beatles albums. You can't download Beatles music anywhere. Apple Music (not Apple Computer) are still in negotiation with the likes of iTunes and Microsoft over digital availability. allofmp3.com does not have a license to sell Beatles music. I am certain they don't have an agreement with the Zappa Family either, though they list a few of Frank's albums too.
Legal in Russia? Maybe. Legal anywhere else? Definitely not.
They may not be scam sites and you may like paying around a tenth of what you pay for really legal downloads but you are putting yourself at risk of copyright infringement and simply stealing from the copyright owners even if you are paying a fee to the distributor.
Ignorance is not an excuse. Common sense should tell you that these sites do not operate within the laws of countries such as the UK or US.

This whole "guide" is just a disguised ad. There's only one recommended site, and dismissing open sources software (shareaza, limewire) as "scam" is just a way to try to move people away from their competition. Althought there are some real scam in their list, it's just the old trick of mixing truth with lies.

I wouldn't trust a site run by that kind of people.

Help! I joined freemovienow.com on 10/31/2006 and have yet to be able to locate any tech support. Every time I try to log in it redirects me to signing up even though I already have. I have not been able to download anything. There's no way to phone them.

Has anybody had ANY experience with this site. I tried to locate them through the charges they posted on my bank account, but it's a Clickbank phone number, not even a number to the company itself.

They have my debit card number. I thought this was a legit site because I got it through a "review" site that listed the best free movie downloads. Now I see them on the list here as a scam.

I Created An Account 2 Days Ago, And As Of Today, 'No Account Is Registered To That Email Address.'
Which Seems To Be A Reoccuring Theme.
Also, Registration Was Supposed To Be Free, But I Was Charged $39.99.
The Prices On the Site Were Amazing. So I Rushed Into It.
And Now My Account Is Nonexistant, And In Order to Use The Site I'd Have To Register For 'Free' Again.
NO THANK YOU.
My Personal Recommendation: STICK WITH iTUNES. It Seems To Be The Only mp3 Downloading Site That Won't Scam You Out Of Money (By Itself Or Via Advertisements).
Plus, iTunes Doesn't Store Your IP Address (Your Computer's Unique Number) And It's Legal Everywhere.
MP3SUGAR Uses A 'Loop-Hole' In The Russian Law To Sell Their Songs So Cheap.
So They Are Most Likely Not Legal Outside Russia.
And If Somebody Decides To Sue MP3Sugar, Then Anyone Who's Used It Will Get In Trouble Too, Because All Of Their Information Is Stored Somewhere In The Site.
MP3Sugar Is Pretty Much The Russian Version Of Limewire.
Both Proclaim To Be Perfectly Legal.
We Know Limewire Isn't.
And MP3SUGAR Is Using A Loop-Hole.
So DO NOT PUT MONEY INTO MP3SUGAR.

How about a site that is good and doesn't scam you like the above list for TV Shows and Movies? I'm looking for some to download but I'm hesitant about which to sign up for, any suggestions?

I have been using mp3 sugar for about a year now, have had no problems and reloaded 4 times. The 39.95 deal is great cuz you get 10 extra dollars. My only concern is that NO new titles have been added since October 12th of this year. Makes me think it may be getting ready to close down. But, what a great ride. Easy downloading and I have NEVER had a problem.
