Now that Livejournal has accused one of the femjays of violating their terms of service and instructed her to remove her default icon, they're getting all up in arms that the abuse team won't respond to their letter writing campaigns and essentially told them "my way or the highway."
"Finally, please be aware that write-in campaigns are never effective in swaying the opinion of the Abuse Team or LiveJournal administrators, or in focusing attention on a particular issue. A flood of requests concerning the same issue only serve to slow down the responses given to valid inquiries such as your request for policy clarification."
Sounds like a classic case of "you can dish it out, but you can't take it" to me.
I wonder how the mods must feel, knowing that they're absolutely powerless to put a stop to this "misogyny" that affects them. Remember this the next time they pass an inane rule and when people complain start talking about "safe space" and "if you don't like it, go start your own community."

I'm just saying that the person who started the whole thing, is sensationnally motivated. It started over an icon that had breasts, but no breastfeeding in it. Someone reported them to LJ abuse, abuse contacted them, they said what about breastfeeding and it snowballed from there.

Yeah, whatever - definitely not worth the nerves that are being expended on it, nor the 'ENTITLED BITCH!' vs. 'OMG BREASTFEEDING RIGHTS!' tangle.

While I personally don't agree that breastfeeding icons are 'too explicit', there are some who do. Hell, from what I'm seeing, this whole debacle started because one user had a vendetta against another user and found something in the TOS to exploit. It's internet drama exploding into some huge OMG OPRESSION OF THE BREAST!!! issue, thanks to what amounts to be an effective troll...

Being able to breastfeed wherever one wants DOES NOT EQUAL being able to plaster a picture of the process all over every single place a default icon shows up on LJ. A 100x100 picture isn't feeding a child. I ... just ... is it that hard to understand?

i just agree with the OP here being kinda amusing. LJ should clearly just say that breastfeeding pics violate the safespace of their website because they imply childbearing privilige.
i also don't know why someone just doesn't have a picture set as their default icon at all and just selects to use the boob one when they want to do something, but hey, protest away.

This issue illustrates exactly why Femjays bug the living crap out of me. Take a perfectly straightforward situation: nudity in userpics. LJ, as a company that thrives on traffic, doesn't want their site getting banned on corporate or school networks because some user out there has a random boob as their main user icon, so they play it safe. Even though I don't see a problem with breastfeeding pics, others might. A perfectly reasonable action for a company. Really, users on LJ get away with A LOT more than users on other sites. The fact that they really don't seem to care if you have nudity in a non-public pic is really something to their credit. Sure LJ Abuse isn't always fair, but they're not demigods of darkness either.
Now, take all of that and throw it out the window. Welcome to Femjay Land. Somehow they've taken this to mean there's an active War on Breastfeeding being waged out there on the servers of LJ.
Am I the only one who is reminded exactly of the Christian Right here? I mean, take "breastfeeding" and replace it with "Good Christian Values" and you've got the Right Wing all over again. When they talk about "writing to their advertisers" they remind me of all the people who go around censoring my TV.
I think breast feeding is cool, and women shouldn't be shunned for doing it. But there is a time and a place. NO, I don't think women should be able to breast feed everywhere in total public. I don't eat in department stores, so why breast feed there? I don't eat in church either. Anyways.

In the real world, some people are offended or titillated by parts a-dangle, and we have to accommodate them/protect ourselves from them to some degree, or at least change things slowly in order to deal with the fact that they exist.
heavens forfend that we should be realistic instead of idealistic.
I don't even know where to BEGIN.
1)It's not inappropriate or pornographic for me to sleep naked, but an avatar of me sleeping naked would be either or both of those things.
2) Birth control isn't natural. Lots of wonderful things that make life better for women and all people are not natural. "Natural" is not inherently good or bad.
3) Limiting women's bodies by going on about how one way of feeding a baby is the best ever is so patriarchal. It's true: most studies show that breast-feeding is the best way to feed your baby. So what else is good for the baby? Taking folic acid and avoiding alcohol and particular foods and activities if you are or have even the remotest chance of getting pregnant. Being financially well-off enough to support your child. Having one parent stay at home full time to look after the child. But somehow, feminists don't insult women who don't manage those things.
Oh, and there's a new fem_rage post about how patriarchal institutions are trying to stop women's periods. Again, they're natural so they're good.
Like people keep saying, I don't eat in the department stores, why should babies be allowed too? I think women would stop breast feeding in public if we gave them a place to go to. Most women just do it anywhere because they have no where to go.
I don't lean pro towards either of the sexes.
I have nothing against babies- I will probably eventually have one myself some day.

You have the right to nurse your child.
But, why would you want to?!?, maybe because the child is hungry & you can?!?
I'm sure it's not because you enjoy it, or to make others uncomfortable- although it does anyway- which might be more about their own issues.
I would go out of my way to avoid having to do it in public.
And, i'm sure it's not always possible; & if so, you do what you must.
So, i'm not completely speaking to these girls.
It's alright in the case of making it discreet & quick.
I'm more so talking about the women who just do it right out in the open, totally casual, act as if it's nothing worth a second look...
and when attention is drawn to them they're all "What's the problem?".
Now that i'm considering it- it's probably much better off done in a bathroom.
You know how some bathrooms have a "waiting room" or a "powder room" on the inside?!?
Perhaps they should start making places like those- more specific for the purpose of catering to such needs.
