The Grand Master Plan of AnthologyBuilder
Cross-Posted from http://nancyfulda.livejournal.com

Now that AnthologyBuilder’s been running smoothly for a few weeks, I’d like to discuss how the site is managed and what our plans are for the future.

What We're All About:

AnthologyBuilder is not a traditional fiction magazine, because you are the editor. AnthologyBuilder is dedicated to making sure that you have a broad range of quality stories to choose from.

All of our stories come recommended by an experienced editor: they’ve either been printed before in paying magazines, or they’ve been carefully scrutinized and copy-edited by our staff. We aren’t interested in publishing stories with excessive sex or violence, so we also screen submissions based on content.

A few people have asked me what ‘excessive sex or violence’ actually means. All I can say is, I’ll know it when I see it. X-rated material is definitely off-limits. For everything else, I decide on a case-by-case basis.

Obviously, these content calls are somewhat subjective. There will always be people who are unhappy with where I choose to draw the line, and I do apologize for that. Those who feel I’m being too restrictive may be interested in the next section of this post.

The AnthologyBuilder Open Market

In three to six months—or whenever I feel we’re ready to handle it—AnthologyBuilder will be opening a subsidiary that’s tentatively being called the ‘Open Market’.

The Open Market will be an online marketplace for short-form fiction. Authors will be able to upload stories and offer them for sale at whatever price they wish, without the quality and content screening used in the main AnthologyBuilder web site. Similarly, artists will be able to upload and sell cover art. AnthologyBuilder will provide the assembly and printing services.

In addition to fiction, the Open Market will host non-fiction articles, essays, and blog posts. It will become a place where customers can assemble almost any combination of fiction they could imagine.

Plans for the Future

As AnthologyBuilder’s fiction database grows, we’ll also be expanding other areas of the site. Within a few weeks we’ll open up artist submissions to augment our selection of cover art.

We’ll also be adding features to help customers find the stories they want: ratings and comments associated with each story, recommendations based on the buying patterns of previous customers, and optional content flags to mark stories with profanity or mature content.

And, of course, once AnthologyBuilder is out of Beta testing, we’ll be making a major marketing push to promote the site and its authors.

ah, excellent; the Open Market is a good idea, and a nice addition.

this is an ideal post to use to link to in forums and messageboards, if that's ok by you?

Sure, particularly if the message boards are frequented primarily by writers. Right now, my main goal is to obtain a broad selection of fiction, not to entice customers. The customers come later.

And--this goes for everybody--no spamming, please. I will personally hunt down and shoot anyone who uses AnthologyBuilder as an excuse to leave spammish posts on messageboards.

well, I'm only posting once, so the internet itself will probably flag me for spamming as I'm much too lazy to change even my misspellings. I'm posting on the following forums, for those who don't want to accidentally repeat it:

SF reader (there is one opened, I see, have just added this link in as well)
Critiquecircle
Scalzi's Whateveresque
Realms of fantasy

I might add to Nightshade and Jim Butcher's forum as well, since there are a lot of writers on both, but the latter I doubt the amount of short fiction writers.
maybe Baen Bar too?

Baen's Bar would probably be a good spot. I'm not sure how much they've heard about AnthologyBuilder yet. I haven't plugged it there, but perhaps Sam has... ?

How very fun - almost every thought I've had about how you could do this is now incorporated into your future plans. Awesome!

A question, on a topic I am entirely ignorant about, but I endeavor to be less so.

How does AnthologyBuilder and its contract work out with standard copyright contracts? Does it count as publication or reprint? Most pertinently, if author X has published story Y in magazine/anthology Z, how much of an issue is it for friendly author X to submit story Y to AnthologyBuilder?

If the bigger publications prevent their stories being "reprinted" (anywhere in general and on AB in particular - which I assume is provided for somehow, else an author could upload his story to his personal website the moment he's cashed his check), then I have difficulty seeing where AB's stories are going to come from :(

AnthologyBuilder buys reprint rights. This means that author X's ability to sell story Y to AnthologyBuilder depends on the nature of the contract signed with publisher Z.

Most publishing contracts include an exclusivity period, which means that once the story is printed, the the author must wait a certain amount of time before publishing the story elsewhere. Once that time period has passed, the author is free to republish the story anywhere he wishes.

So far, the major magazines have been very supportive of AnthologyBuilder. In a few cases, magazines have granted authors special permission to upload a story to AnthologyBuilder before its exclusivity period expired.

I received the book I put together in the mail today(01/18). I'm very pleased. It's a beautiful book. I plan to put books together for young readers in my family. Thanks.
