Greetings all! This is a community specific to people interested in taking part in my research project on fan communities on the internet. My name is Mona (not my real name) and I am an anthropology graduate student in Washington, DC. This project is specifically for a Women and Gender Studies research seminar I am taking this (Fall 2004) semester. However, since I plan for internet communities and fandom in general to be my academic focus for what I hope to be a long time, this space might mutate into something more! For more about me, see my personal journal at [info]mona1347.

For now, I am the only one with posting access to the community. However, anyone can comment, member or no. I will be posing questions and topics to the group at large about their experiences in fandom, including polls, open invitations to share your thoughts about a particular aspect of fandom and opportunities to discuss various issues. I'll probably also be doing a number of other things as well! This is a very open ended project that will no doubt evolve as I accumulate responses from all of you!

I'd like to give a short Statement Of Purpose, if you will. This is a precautionary measure, not a "scolding."

We are all thinking adults here (even if you're under 18 that doesn't mean you can't and won't participate in a mature, adult manner). We will often deal with controversial, deeply personal, sexual or subversive topics. This is a community for women to express their experiences in fandom. If you feel you've run across a group of "crazy" or "scary" fen or phenomena in your fandom, I am all for discussion about those experiences and why you feel that way. Almost all of the discussion so far has been of this tone and I thank you. This an academic forum and thus not about who is "right" or "wrong". It is about creating a record of fandom experience. That is all. I will not stop anyone from expressing their opinion. Even if that opinion is controversial.

There are things for all of us that skeeve us out. Whether this is BDSM, D/s, RPS, slash, incest, whatEVER is of no concern to me. There is an excellent post here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/jennyo/138027.html) by [info]jennyo discussing the difference between a "gut" reaction and a "rational" one to various art forms. In this community, neither of these reactions are more valid than the other. But please understand that this is an academic forum and I am primarily concerned with rational debate and the expression of personal experience. If something skeeves you, please say so BUT do not argue with/abuse/flame other people about why you are morally righteous and they are not.

That being said, I will encourage active discussion and debate. This means not everyone will agree and you may be offended by things some people write. So please then comment and tell us why this offends you, why it "damages your stomach lining." In a reasonable and rational way. Again, I will not tolerate personal abuse or flaming.

I personally am involved in a limited number of fandoms and am often ignorant of the controversy amongst many fen. Please bear with my ignorance from time to time and understand that I am not out to judge anyone. Only to understand.

OK, that makes me sound like your therapist but I trust you know what I mean :).
