"you can call me noop dawg." Anoop Desai was born on December 20, 1986. He grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and is an only child. In the 1990s, Anoop appeared on a local television show called CentralXpress.com, playing the character "Raj". The show won multiple awards, including seven regional Emmys, two national Iris awards, and a national Gabriel Award.
After being accepted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), Anoop auditioned for and was accepted as a member of the UNC Clef Hangers, a long-standing male a capella group founded in 1977. Anoop served as the group's musical director during his junior year and as the group's president his senior year, and remains President Emeritus of the Clef Hangers.
Anoop graduated from UNC in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring in Political Science and American Studies. He was awarded the 2008 Peter C. Baxter Memorial Prize in American Studies, as one who exemplified "intellectual excellence, personal warmth and creativity." Anoop is currently a graduate student in the field of Cultural Anthropology, working towards a Master of Arts degree in Folklore at UNC.
Anoop auditioned for Season 8 of American Idol to honor his friend Eve Marie Carson, who was murdered in March of 2008. During Anoop's journey on Idol, he was chosen for the first-ever Top 13 and made it onto the national tour. He finished in 6th place during a double elimination on the April 22nd results show. Anoop is in the process of relocating to L.A. to pursue a career in music, and is currently in the studio working on his very first demo. Affiliates:
