The Virtual Fan Lounge & Denver Fanzine Lounge
The Virtual Fan Lounge grew out of the Virtual Corflu earlier this year, linked to Corflu Silver in Las Vegas. And it's probably not news to anyone reading this that the Worldcon is taking place in Denver, Colorado this weekend.

There are plans to produce several one-shots (if that's not a contradiction in terms) in the Denver Fanzine Lounge over the weekend. We in The Virtual Fan Lounge will be looking to do our bit to helping out with the Saturday fanzine. Contributing articles, art and whatever else comes to hand. So we will be "open" the same hours as the Denver Fanzine Lounge on Saturday – which works out as Sat 5.00 pm to Sun 1.00 am British Summer Time.

If you are interested in contributing in any way, or just want to heckle from the peanut gallery, come along. The Virtual Fan Lounge will be acting as the focal point for all those fans who'd love to be involved in the Denver Fanzine Lounge, without all that messy business of actually having to travel to Denver...

If you feel we're being a bit vague about exactly *how* we'll be interacting with the Fanzine Lounge at Denver, well that's quite deliberate. Until they get there, our friends in the Denver Fanzine Lounge aren't going to know exactly what access we will have to them – or them to us. But we are hoping to get some live interaction at some point, even if just on audio, if the internet connection for the Denver Fanzine Lounge operates as hoped.

The Virtual Fan Lounge is at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-virtual-fan-lounge and further details of what we're planning are in the latest issue of Virtual Tucker Hotel, at http://efanzines.com/VTH/VTH15.pdf

Just a reminder to everyone that there are still rooms available in the Queen's Elms for attendees going to MeCon 11. The rooms are single en-suite, and cost £30 per person per night. We need to be giving a full list of attendees to the Elms so they can allocate rooms no later than next Friday (8th August), so if you would like to book a room please let us know before then.

    Frank Darcy RIP
I have just received email from Michael Carroll:

Bad news: Christine Darcy just phoned to say that Frank ([info]xnamkrad) died this morning at around 6:30 in Our Lady's Hospice in Harold's Cross. She said that it was very peaceful and he just slipped away.

No details yet on the arrangements, but later today Frank's body will be laid out in the hospice's mortuary. Friday seems likely for the funeral but it's not yet confirmed - I'll e-mail again when I know more.

I don't have contact detail for that many of Frank's friends, so please pass on the news as appropriate.

Even though we knew it was coming I still can't get a handle on this. He was a great friend and no one will ever replace him.

I'm deeply saddened by the news of Frank's death. Irish cons will not be the same without him.

This weekend in The Virtual Fan Lounge
Okay, so I've been moderately restrained about plugging The Virtual Fan Lounge here, since I assume that all right-thinking (internet-connected) fanzine fen regularly check out efanzines.com, and that even-more-right-thinking fanzine fen will be downloading each issue of Virtual Tucker Hotel as it comes out...

However, I did want to put out a special notice for this weekend's events in The Virtual Fan Lounge. On the Saturday, at 12 midnight BST, we have text-only chat with Southern Fandom Classic. Then, on the Sunday, I'm doing an interview with fannish legend Shelby Vick at 5 pm BST, followed by a repeat showing of Arnie Katz's most recent edition of The Wasted Hour at 6 pm BST. Please feel free to join us for any or all of the above at:

7th Fantastic Film Weekend in Bradford
The Fantastic Film Weekend features horror, fantasy and science-fiction cinema and television and is hosted by Britain's National Museum of Photography, Film & Television in Bradford. Now in it's seventh year, the festival is taking place June 13-15 2008 with showings that run the gamut from 'the stark monochrome classics of the silent era through to the latest digital epics'.

This year sees the work of Piers Haggard, Robert Wynne-Simmons, Peter Duffell, Harry Kümel and Robert Fuest being featured; you can view trailers of their films and more festival showings on YouTube.

Tickets for the full weekend cost no more than £40 with single day passes available.

All Knowledge Is Contained in anonymousclaire?
Does anyone know of a UK-based source for 70 gsm A4 paper? (Preferably in reams.) Back when I was first doing fanzines (which, I've just realised, is before the likes of [info]johncoxon were even born), 70 gsm was the standard weight of paper. I'd already realised that the standard weight of paper these days is 80 gsm. What I *hadn't* realised, until this weekend, was that 70 gsm paper doesn't seem to be available at all any more, even as a non-standard weight. Either that, or my google-fu is slipping...

The reason I want some 70 gsm paper, incidentally, is due to the fact that I am producing a limited number of paper copies of Virtual Tucker Hotel. A typical issue size looks as if it's going to be 8 pages, or two sheets of A4 as a booklet. Two sheets of 80 gsm weighs exactly 10 grammes. By the time you add staples, address labels, sticky tape and stamps, it puts it just over 10 grammes. Which is the difference between 56p international postage and 81p international postage. The same fanzine on 70 gsm paper would come out just under 10 grammes, saving me 25p postage per copy. I'm prepared to live with a marginal increase in bleed-through for 25p a copy...

    Virtual Tucker Hotel
The general consensus in the Virtual Corflu was that we'd all like to do it again. So Bill Mills has set up a Virtual Fan Lounge, separate from the Corflu one, and we'll be holding our first events this weekend.

I've also done a fanzine to explain some of the background to - and promote - the Virtual Fan Lounge. Yes, a fanzine to promote a chat-room. Look, this is The Fandom Formerly Known As Fanzine Fandom, so it makes some kind of karmic sense, OK?

The first issue of Virtual Tucker Hotel is available at (where else?) http://efanzines.com/VTH/index.htm

(Yes, I'm going to do that naff apology about cross-posting to [info]corflu again.)

Corflu Silver Virtual Con Suite transcript available
I have an almost-full transcript of the Corflu Silver Virtual Con Suite, from the morning of Friday 25th to the evening of Sunday 27th. This is stitched together from the transcripts that both Geri Sullivan and I kept over the weekend.

It would probably be unfair, from a privacy point of view, to post the transcript on a web-page or other publicly-accessible places. But if any fan wants a copy, they can e-mail me at peter "at" burdonvale.co.uk.

The transcript is almost 70,000 words (424k) and, as with most chat-rooms, people talk (or type!) over each other in places. But there's a lot of interesting fannish discussion and humour (intentional or otherwise!), so worth a read. But then, I would say that, wouldn't I?

(Usual apologies to victims of cross-posting from [info]corflu)

First an apology as I'm cross posting this.

I also know there's a bundle of others coming up Satellite II. Picocon, Octocon and others covering both the rest of this year and 2009

I appreciate any help thank you

Got Dinner Plans? Don't Go Hungry--Go First Class!
From Andrew Scheuber of the UK Alzheimer's Research Trust:

Calling all Fans of Terry Pratchett and Raj Persaud!

As you may have seen in the media, best-selling Fantasy author Terry Pratchett has sadly been diagnosed with a variety of early onset Alzheimer’s. He has spoken out about the need for more research and has donated very generously to the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

On 1st May the Alzheimer’s Research Trust will be hosting a small exclusive dinner at a private venue in London. The format of the evening will be a dinner hosted by Consultant Psychiatrist, broadcaster and author of various popular publications on psychiatry, Dr. Raj Persaud, with acclaimed author Terry Pratchett OBE as guest of honour. Mr. Pratchett and Dr. Persaud will spend time with our guests talking about their involvement with the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

If you would like to join us for this wonderful and unique evening, please contact us as soon as possible, and before 3pm on 21st April. You can do so by email to terrypratchettdinner@alzheimers-research.org.uk or by letter to the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, The Stables, Station Road, Great Shelford, Cambridge, CB22 5LR or fax to 01223 843325. As I’m sure you will understand, places are strictly limited to no more than 15 people and seats will be allocated to the highest bidders.

Seat allocation will operate on a closed-bid basis. In the event of several bids of equal amount being received, where it is not possible to distinguish which bid was made first, invitees will be chosen by process of random selection. Successful bidders will be notified by close of business on 24th April.
