Happy Birthday Anna May Wong!

As a special treat to our members and readers, I have scanned an AP Newswire photo from my modest AMW collection to share with this community.

(If you're wondering, all the other images I have posted have been found through searches, eBay and many other sources.)

Headline and Caption:
Oriental Clothes Go
Anna May Wong has sold her entire Oriental wardrobe and now dresses in styles that should suit the exotic type of brunette.

Stamped April 21, 1938
Stamped Save Photo Metal 90 Days (I'm not sure what that means.)

Notes: I have not watermarked my scans because I believe it takes away from the beauty of the photos.

10th-Dec-2009 07:07 pm - Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy

Karl Lagerfeld, head designer for Chanel, directed a short film for his Paris Shanghai collection. It's called Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy, The Trip That Coco Chanel Only Made in Her Dreams.

Coco takes a "trip" through various decades of Shanghai. One of the stops she makes is aboard the Shanghai Express--a reference to Anna May's film, Shanghai Express. Tao Okamoto and Heidi Mount star as Anna May Wong and Marlene Dietrich, respectively.

A warning before viewing: There is yellowface. The film has racist undertones and overtones. The acting's mediocre. But I think it's worth seeing Tao Okamoto as Anna May Wong. (Yes, I know she's Japanese. I'm just glad they didn't cast someone who was non-Asian.)

They have the full short film available here. It's also available on Youtube: Part 1, Part 2, & Part 3.

Part 2: Skip to the 2:22 minute mark for the Shanghai Express segment.

6th-Dec-2009 05:52 pm - Piccadilly Revisited Casting Notice
Anna - dachshund
As Chinatown Arts Space's website states: "Piccadilly Revisited was part of the Thames Festival held on Sat 12 September 2009 (8.15pm - 10.00pm) at the East-facing facade of the Royal Festival Hall." I was preoccupied with school and work, so I forgot to post about this event in September. But I'm making up for it by letting you guys know about a casting notice for a Piccadilly Revisited short film. Details are below.

Click on the photo for a larger picture.

Description: Chinatown Arts Space presents Piccadilly Revisited, a cross-artform production inspired by the life and love of Hollywood's first Chinese film star, Anna May Wong, and the classic British silent movie Piccadilly (1929) in which she played a starring role (funding is provided by the British Art Council, for more information, visit www.ChinatownArtsSpace.com).

We are looking for an East Asian female actress to perform in some short film surreal dream sequences in the style of David Lynch’s films in both colour and monochrome. The film sequences will be on screen as part of the multi-media production Piccadilly Revisited.

The production will premiere at the Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House in London in March 2010. It will be toured around UK and East Asia.

Role: 18-28 Female. Anna May Wong is an actress who is sexy, classy, dreamy and passionate for life. Note: It is a silent film, no voice work, but excellent body movement required. But you need to look like Anna May Wong.

Shoot/Start Date: 01/20/2010
Compensation: A copy of film sequences for your portfolio, Travel expenses will be paid for.
Shooting Location: New York
