Free great high-energy Airedale/Coonhound mix dog [Jul. 8th, 2009|09:11 am]

[Tags|, , , ]

Hello,

My good friend adopted a dog but has to give it away because of her allergies. Here's what she says, and a pic:

I fostered a great dog this weekend - an Airedale/Coonhound mix - since we're looking for a playful companion for our big high energy dog Barnaby. While they could not be better matched - it's so great to see them playing so happily all the time - I can't seem to handle her allergy level. (The Airedale side tends to be hypo-allergenic, and i didn't realize she had so much of the other side).

We're going to keep her until she can be re-homed or fostered and I'm working with the rescue agency she came from, but I thought I'd put the word out if any one else might take her in. She's completely housebroken, well-behaved, has been through obedience training, very high energy. She's spayed and up-to-date on all shots. A great dog.

She is free, by the way, no re-homing fee. Almost 2-years old. Great with dogs and cats.

If interested, email Stephannie at tsering.wangmo@gmail.com

So, I am getting married next October, and we want to use the Michigan Union Ballroom for our reception. I think anyway, we haven't 100% confirmed due to the next issue, which is that we are not having a religious wedding, but still want a ceremony with vows and walking down an "isle" and the whole hoo-ha. But our problem is we can't find a location to get married! I thought about the arb, but they can only accommodate 100 people or less, and while we only have about 150 and probably not all of them will show up. The thing is the Union is so huge (ballroom can hold 300 people) we are actually trying to ADD people to fill it up more. And if size wasn't the issue, the other issue is I want somewhere to get ready and retouch my hair and you know, not just jump out of the car and run into the woods in my dress.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a place we could get married? We only need like MAX 2 hours, but I want everything about it to be traditional except no religion will be involved. Help! And it can't be too far from the Michigan Union....

I've lost prescription coverage and need to get a prescription for Ortho-tricyclen (*not* the generic version) filled and have no idea what prices to expect or whether to order online or go local. Any tips? Thanks!

Dancing [Jul. 2nd, 2009|11:40 am]

sweetness44
Where is a good place to go in A2/Ypsi for dancing? Not Top 40 clubbing, but more along the lines of 50s/60s, Frank Sinatra-esque type music? Oh, and smoking/decent martinis would also be a big plus.

The Ann Arbor news finally published a listing of events in the area in today's paper (nice timing *rolls eyes*). All info is borrowed from the Mlive.com and MichiganFirworks.com

Hudson Mills Metropark (outside of Dexter) - Friday around 10pm. There's also a live band, food, and events for children inside the park before the fireworks.

Manchester - Friday around 10pm, Carr Park.

Whitmore Lake - Saturday, 10pm, over the lake.

Fowlerville - Saturday, 10pm, in the community park.

Parades

Ann Arbor - Jaycee's Fourth of July Parade, 10am Saturday. Usually is on Liberty, Main, and Washington St.

Ypsilanti - 11am Saturday, on Cross St. from Wallace St (just past EMU) to Rice St. (just west of Depot Town), (route on google)

Whitmore Lake - Saturday, 12pm. The parade follows Main St.

Brighton - 10am Saturday, down Main St. from Church St. to 7th St. and then down 7th St. to the high school.

Fowlerville - 7pm Saturday through Downtown. Events all day.

Howell - 9am Friday, $5-10, Grand River Bvd.

Info will be updated as I get it.
If the event is free PLEASE DONATE A FEW DOLLARS to keep the events going year after year, some of us, myself included, remember the air shows and fireworks Ann Arbor used to have, and the events Chelsea used to have, before they shut them down!

Any other amateur mechanics looking for repair pals? [Jul. 1st, 2009|05:23 pm]

I just started taking automotive technician classes at WCC, and while I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination, I am more than good enough to provide any fellow do-it-yourself-er with a second pair of hands when you're repairing your car, doing maintenance, etc.

I can now haltingly read wiring diagrams & schematics, though I still get a bit confused when using a multimeter/code reader.

I can use a torque wrench to make sure things stay on (and don't break off).

I know how to look for car info on teh internetz.

I know a few basic things about what sounds and effects cars make when they are trying to tell you they need a vet appointment.

I am beginning to understand all that confusing stuff about relays, charging systems, resistance, amperage, etc.

I am careful and patient enough to take the time to not make a problem worse with ham-fisted wrenching technique.

Just to clarify, I am NOT yet taking jobs repairing cars for pay. I am only good enough as yet to assist a basically competent do it yourself mechanic. Don't look to me as an expert (yet).

This is going out to other amateur mechanics who might want a wrenching pal. I am volunteering to *help you* work on your car, for free, because I need all the practice I can get.

In case it matters, I am a happily married youngish middle aged male.

Since this town is a good place to be paranoid, we can provide each other with local character references before arranging a meeting, if you like. Can't hurt.

Adult learning centers? [Jul. 1st, 2009|03:39 pm]

abmoit
Does anyone know of any adult learning centers in the area that can specifically teach reading? I have a cousin who is 23 whose reading level is not even that of a first grader. Oh, and I believe he is mildly autistic too, but that's besides the point.

Park and Ride Bus Service at Arborland [Jun. 30th, 2009|04:56 pm]

quixotic_otaku
If you are interested in bus service continuing at Arborland Mall or if you use the parking lot as a commuter.  This service is scheduled to end tomorrow.  If you believe that having a commuter lot and bus service at Arborland is important, please call AmCap.

Call to let them know that it is a disservice and is bad business to cut services )

Members of Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice's transit coalition have been trying to talk to someone at AmCap for many days now, and we've been told that their offices have been instructed to say "no comment" on this issue. They have been receiving a lot of calls.

The time is running out for us to try to address this issue. So I am asking you to try to make one last push.

Can you call the AmCap corporate office today (203) 327-2001 and ask to speak to the president? If he is unavailable, simply leave a voicemail. Tell him what your concerns are and what the impact might be of moving the AATA bus stop..</div>

Phone number and other verbage behind cut.  I just called and they were taking the name and phone number of everyone who called.

Fireworks in the area [Jun. 29th, 2009|03:43 pm]

I have been looking up fireworks listing in the Washtenaw County area, as well as the Detroit area, and I have had little if any luck finding any listings. I keep on getting articles from 2008, 2007, 2005... doesn't help one bit. You would think they'd take those listings down after they were over, but I can't expect everyone to use their brain on this planet.

All I know is that Ypsilanti is having their fireworks at the Lakeview Apartments down Grove St on Wednesday, around 10ish, and they'll be shooting them over Ford Lake. Hudson Mills outside of Dexter has one on Friday night, I believe. Milan used to have one, but I don't see anything about it. Whitmore Lake may be having some on the fourth.

As for parades, I believe Ann Arbor and Ypsi are both having one, Ann Arbor usually has theirs at 10am. Whitmore Lake always has one, I'm not sure what the time is.

If anyone can confirm dates and times for me, and we can list an official calendar up here, that would be nice. As it is, I can't find shit online. :/

My Googling results have been unsuccessful.
Can someone tell me where I can donate canned goods to a local area food drive or bank? The closest one I've noticed is like, Lansing.

Celebrants: Individuals who can perform secular or mixed-faith ceremonies [Jun. 25th, 2009|07:25 am]

sarahmichigan
I interviewed a man local to Ann Arbor who has recently finished training to be a "celebrant" and had an article about the topic published. Celebrants can provide customized weddings and might be a good choice for couples who aren't comfortable with a church wedding but also don't want a quickie ceremony with the judge. His website is linked in the article if anyone is interested or knows someone who might be interested in his services.

church [Jun. 21st, 2009|11:02 pm]

I'm planning on trying out as many different churches as possible. I grew up in an Episcopal church and am starting to realize so much of my struggle with religion is that I feel little connection to what feels like a scripted service and I want to try something new. So, tell me why you love your church. It seems like so many  I've found via google call themselves evangelical (Ex: Vineyard Church) ,and maybe this is just me stereotyping, but as a liberal, I'm kind of freaked out by that haha. Feel free to tell me if I should stop freaking out and try it though!

Thanks so much!

plz buy my car! ($2800 OBO, a2 area) [Jun. 18th, 2009|11:49 pm]

weedy_tea
this spectacular beauty is a 2002 Black Saturn SL2, "blacksilver" color (meaning, in saturn terms, it's a shiny black) in good condition.

approx 140,000 miles, all highway. (i used to commute to detroit and then farmington hills from a2. it adds up.) but it has held up like a champ, and it wants to do the same for you!

it is a GREAT commuter, student, first, economy, etc car. marvelous.

it drives smoothly: fast as you like (it enjoys a good bit of speeding now and then) and as easy as you please, has a very tight turning radius (wonderful for turning in subdivisions, tight city spots or for easy getaways) and looks sporty throughout.

spiffy specs: it is a 4 door sedan, automatic transmission, front wheel drive (a must in michigan!), A/C, power windows and locks, single CD player, rear spoiler and experience parallel parking downtown. it tends to have good parking karma, and a fair sense of direction despite not having a built-in compass. i am certain it will bestow these traits unto you, fair buyer.

Kelley Blue Book Value for PRIVATE PARTY SALE = ~$3500. THIS IS NOT THE TRADE-IN PRICE.** the trade-in price is what one would receive should one sell a car to a CAR DEALER who would then either give you a better deal on a new(er) car, and/or resell said car for a profit. THAT IS WHY private party sales are MORE EXPENSIVE.

as you can see, the price is a steal. i want it gone, and i want you to have it.

this car is longing for a new home. a new loving driver who will drive her off into the wild blue yonder, take her through the treacherous roads of downtown a2 during rush hour, and road trip anywhere your heart desires. this car NEEDS YOU.

please. if you don't buy this car, the terrorists win. they eat baby kittens that are showered with the tears of a clown wept by a lost and lonely car, who looks at you with big baby eyes DEEP INTO YOUR SOUL as you read this. you need this car just as it needs you.

buy this car. it will make you happy. it will complete you.*** you will feel a freedom you have never had before. the freedom to drive with your new beloved saturn. a saturn who will love you long time. yes.

...please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, etc - i'd love to show you my car!

** i add this only because i've had several people not understand the difference in pricing. and i really can't stand any more. please.
*** ok, i can't back these claims up, but i believe them to be true. indeedly so.
