Abbreviated weekend... Since time is short. Went to D.C. on Saturday, Mary had to work, so no lunch with her. Shannon was having fun with friends in Maryland, so no lunch with her. Telf had the Martian Death Flu, so no lunch with her. I went to the National Cathedral in D.C. via Georgetown University, some nice neighborhoods, and a terrifying cobblestone street with about a 20 degree slope that dumped me onto some major thoroughfare...fun! Breaking the new Subaru in nicely. Spent a few hours at the Cathedral, needed more time, must go back soon. Chatted with some tourists from England...figured they had cathedrals coming out the wazoo, but wanted to see how we did things in the Colonies. Told them my
Top Gear Redneck gas station story.
On the way back, stopped by Rob and Tikki's place, Rob wasn't there but I found my DVD nonetheless. Helped Matt and Tikki move Greg and Leah into their new place. Still have moving karma to burn off. Most of the moving had already been done, but we helped getting boxes into their approximate final locations. Played some
Call of Duty 4 again...I still suck. Drove home, slept at the Petersburg rest area...it really is restful. Set off my car's security alarm somehow. Got home around 2 a.m.
Sunday... more movies than I've probably seen the rest of the year. Triple feature at the Naro with Dan.
The Fall, Mongol and
The Children of Huang Shi. Telf really needs to see
The Fall, as well as anyone who enjoyed
The Princess Bride. Awesome! Beautifully filmed, exotic locations and an engaging story along with a wonderful child actress. I can't gush about this film enough. And anyone who knows me, knows I don't give out accolades easily.
Mongol was basically Braveheart for the Gengis Khan fans. Again, interesting story of the young Gengis Khan, who was a slave more times than I care to count. I wrote a m15m version in my head last night...maybe it'll get on paper one day. My friend Randy back home would eat the epic battle scenes up with a spoon. There was a bit of disjointedness to the film...things would happen without explaination or obvious gaps in time would occur where we would just have to accept the outcome.
The Children of Huang Shi is set during the Rape of Nanking...it's based on a true story (which means they had free liberty to make up whatever they felt like...so, I have to take it with a grain of salt.) But it was also entertaining with lots of amazing vistas of China. I felt like I'd watched an afternoon's worth of National Geographic specials by the time it was all over.
Afterwards, we had sushi with Sasha. Oh, Sasha...the silent Buster Keaton film is going to be Sherlock, Jr. at the Naro Expanded Theater with live piano accompaninment by Chris Kypros on Sunday, August 3rd at 1:00 p.m. and Monday, August 4th at 7:15 p.m. I'm sure I'm going to try for the Sunday engagement.
I got my bottle of absinthe from Donielle. Thanks!
And now, I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row for my trip to Louisville later this week. Busy, busy, busy!
Today: cleaned cat boxes, cleaned bird cage, got haircut, and some liquor boxes to pack stuff in. Tomorrow, laundry, packing and more packing. Then hours and hours of relaxing driving...and then
Wonderfest! Hey! The
pocket program is up already! I'd better check it out! Oh, boy! Life-sized dinos!!
