Sorry for posting so frequently.  Can anyone help me with the following questions?

(Question 1 edited)

1.  試験の前だけ勉強したところで、実力はつかない。

a. Does the above line means "you can't gain any real strength if you study only before the exam"?
b. Does the つかない in this sentence the same as the 付く in 身に 付く?
c. Is かない the appropriate kanji for the verb つかない in this sentence?

2. Which is the correct choice of word to be used in the following?

a. これはあの作家(らしく / らしい)作品だ。
b. 若者(らしく / らしい)もっと積極的にいろんなことをやってみなさいよ。
c. (走らなかったところで / 走らなくても)間に合います。

I suppose the answers are:  a. らしい, b.らしく, c. 走らなくても.
Please let me know if I am right or wrong, thanks!

Help with a phrase [Apr. 11th, 2008|09:25 am]

Hi, everybody!  Does anyone know the meaning of the phrase 頭も白くなってしまった?

Someone has raised this question in another forum, but there are very different answers to the same question.  o.O

Someone said that it means "my hair has turned white".
Someone said that it means "I became scared".

Which one should be the correct translation?

Hello, I don't really have any full transliterations that need looked over at the moment (well, moreso, :D; I don't think you'd want eight revisions in your faces) so instead I'm just going to ask some questions about things that I'm unsure about.

'崩れ込みたく'? How on earth do I space that? I have it as 'kuzure komi taku' but it doesn't feel right.

'引き裂かれたって'... is 'hikisakaretatte' correct, or is it 'hikisakareta tte'? I might be silly asking that, I don't know since it was one of those times where I stared at it too long... kinda like, have you ever looked at an English word like "clothes" or something for so long that your mind suddenly didn't believe it was correct? >.>... ... Maybe I'm the only one who's crazy like that.

Thank you for your time and any help.

Sugi de vs. sugite [Apr. 3rd, 2008|07:07 pm]

1. 飲みすぎ頭が痛い。
2. 飲みすぎ頭が痛い。

Which of the above is grammatically correct ?

think both are correct, but the meanings are different.

1. 飲みすぎ頭が痛い → My head aches because I drink too much
2. 飲みすぎ頭が痛い → I drink too much and my head aches

So, example 1 is more commonly used.
Can anyone confirm, please?  :)

[OFF-TOPIC] - I need help with a homework assignment!! [Mar. 30th, 2008|01:31 am]
bri_hime7
Hi yet again. (^^) I have another question I want to ask ( and I hope this doesn't sound weird, or that you guys think this is spam. ^^;; )

Basically, I have a report/speech due next week, and I need email-related statistics (these statistics deal with delivery time; ie, how long it takes to send: a small message, a message with attachments, etc). I can't find anything with Google (and I've been searching for DAYS), so I've decided to gather my own data through a series of 6 small tests.

If you can help (and I really hope you can; I really need more people/data!!), please read this page and follow the steps (I didn't post the steps in here 'cuz it might make the community homepage REALLY long).

Ooh, and one more thing: if you decide to help, I need your answers by Thursday, April 3, 2008 (EST/GMT -5)!!

Thanks in advance, everyone! (And again, I'm sorry if this post is against the rules...)

[HELP] Subtitles/other similar things [Mar. 28th, 2008|07:25 pm]
bri_hime7
I was wondering: are anyone of you (or perhaps someone you know) really good with subtitles (or rather, can you translate -- or at least type the kanji for -- Japanese audio files)?

There are some in-concert conversations that Do As Infinity had (they're anywhere from 1-6 minutes long each), and I'd really like to have them translated and posted on my site someday soon. The problem is, I don't know who to ask and I don't know where to go. ><;

If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!! <3

Hello again all, sorry to bother you (aka: interrupt your possibly otherwise quiet friends list).

I'm looking for some help on a transliteration I did recently-ish, so thank you for your time if you take a look at this.

[JAPANESE QUESTION] - I need help speaking to a Japanese vendor. ><; [Mar. 25th, 2008|09:55 pm]
bri_hime7
Hello. =)

UPDATE (March 26): I have heard back from the vendor!! Please see below for his response!!

A few days ago, I saw something that I really want to buy (the vendor's in Japan, but I have a friend who lives in Japan and she agreed to translate messages, and order the item for me in case the vendor doesn't ship overseas).

The only problem is, my friend just left town due to an emergency. ( ><; ) And I want to ask the vendor a question about shipping.

So, I was hoping someone could translate the following for me? Please? ;___;

MY MESSAGE
Hello,

Can you tell me how much shipping is for this item? I live in 佐賀県 (Saga-ken).

THE VENDOR'S RESPONSE
ご質問ありがとうございます。送料はメール便で80円を予定してます。

...I just tried using BabelFish on this, but I'd like a better translation if you don't mind. (^^) But uh...did he just say that shipping only costs 80 yen?! 'Cuz that's cheap as hell! That's like, 80 cents!!! o____O

He lives in 千葉県 (Chiba-ken), which is like on the other side of Japan (from Saga-ken). So yeah...wow. I'm surprised if that's the actual cost of shipping. x____X

 Does anyone know じゃぷん?

This is an episode name. Usually the episode names are about the activity focused upon in the show, like:
Let's 温泉! or
Let's 遊園地! or even
Let's にゃんシング!

In this episode 皆 goes to the pool.

This title uses a very strange mixture of scripts (DE). じゃぷん is in hiragana, so it seems like a native word, but I can't find it in my pitiful dictionary.

言わないとわかんないよね何事も

I'm having trouble with this one.

a) To not say anything is to not know anything, no matter what..

b) Whatever it is, you have to say it to know it.

c) Not saying it is not knowing it, nothing more.

d) Everything has to be said to be understood.

It's none of these, is it?

[Lyrics Discussion] 宵待雨月 - sola image song [Jan. 10th, 2008|02:40 pm]

Translated mostly because I like this song and Hata Aki (畑亜貴) is one of my favorite lyricists. Unfortunately her lyrics are always pretty abstract and hard to translate! A lot of the English doesn't make too much sense, any and all comments are welcome.

[LYRICS DISCUSSION] Do As Infinity - Yesterday & Today [Jan. 2nd, 2008|05:17 pm]

[music |Yesterday & Today by Do as Infinity]

I'm crazy about this song, which is the theme song of the J-drama 二千年の恋.  But when I browse the web, I find that some of the translations are either deadly wrong, or some important words are left untranslated.  So I've spent some time to translate this song.  Yet I'm uncertain about the meaning of several words, and some of the lines are so abstract that I don't know if I have rendered it properly in English.  Please help me to improve the translation.  The original lyrics are really beautiful and it deserves a proper translation.

Specific Questions:
[1] Or does this line mean "anything you do will be permitted"?
[2] 咲かそう is derived from 咲かす.  Goo defines 咲かす as 興をもよおす.  Can I translate it as "flourish"?

Thanks!
