Anime Los Angeles Shinbunshi: currently accepting articles [Aug. 28th, 2008|04:34 pm]

divine_sage
The Anime Los Angeles Shinbunshi, our newsletter, is currently accepting article submissions.  I'm looking to print some articles in the upcoming fall issue.  Articles can be about anything, as long as it relates back to Anime Los Angeles.  Tell us why you love Anime LA, describe a particular event at the convention, talk about how Anime LA is different from other conventions, etc.  It's up to you.  If you'd like to submit an article, please e-mail it to shinbunshi@animelosangeles.org by September 13, 2008.  I'd like a minimum of 300 words per article, and multiple submissions from the same author are allowed.

A note about the editing process: All articles will be edited for grammar, style, and content at my discretion, but all changes will be discussed with the author.  I'm a firm believer in protecting both the integrity of the publication, and of the article, so I'll send you back your article with my edits to make sure you approve.  Please remember to include your full name when submitting articles so that I can credit you properly, and be sure that the e-mail address you use to send me the article is one I can contact you with.

Also, I cannot guarantee that I will print every article that is submitted to me.  However, if it isn't printed in the fall newsletter, there's a chance it will be printed in subsequent newsletters.  Keep in mind that by submitting an article to the Anime Los Angeles Shinbunshi, you are giving me, the editor, the right to print that article in Anime Los Angeles publications.

Thanks!
Carolyn Ayton, editor-in-chief

What to do between now and the convention? Well, in October we're sponsoring a cosplay picnic, stay tuned for that.

Also, Animé Los Angeles will be sponsoring "Animé Los Angeles Day" at Loscon. Eat your turkey on Thanksgiving, laze around on Friday, join us that Saturday -- Loscon is at the same hotel we're going to use. Anime Los Angeles August 24th Committee Meeting Location and Times! [Aug. 18th, 2008|06:59 pm]

summoner_lenne9
Hello everyone! Our dear chairman Chaz is currently soaring through the clouds towards Indianapolis, so I- his loyal minion- am posting in his stead!  If you’re interested in volunteering for Anime Los Angeles 5, or just are curious to see how our Committee Meetings are run, you’re in luck!

Our next meeting will be this up coming Sunday, August 24th at Round Table Pizza, located at the corner of Lakeview,  Yorba Linda Blvd and Imperial Highway! 18518 Yorba Linda Blvd, Yorba Linda.

If you come from the east, take Imperial Hwy, turn a sharp right at Yorba Linda Blvd. And look for the 7-Eleven and Autozone signs, the Round Table sign is hard to see.

Lakeview is an exit off the 91 (go north) and Yorba Linda Blvd is an exit off the 57 (go east). Round Table is on the southeast corner. There's a 7-11 there and also an AutoZone. Round Table is in the corner of the strip mall.

The meeting begins at noon, so please try to make it there on time! Hopefully we’ll be done by three.

This is, just as with every other Anime Los Angeles meeting you’ll find, a completely open meeting, which means you or anyone else you deem fit can come along! Really, that means anyone. We don’t judge- we’re all Nerds here as well.

I hope you are all having a lovely day and this post will be edited soon with the exact location and hopefully directions to follow. EDIT: We are no longer at Lamppost Pizza, as is mentioned above and below.

All words that are directly copy and pasted from Lynn are, obviously, hers. :).
Edit: And same with Chaz's. :).

Minion Out!

postcard art contest [Aug. 12th, 2008|12:21 pm]

hazelchaz
[Current Location |Santa Ana CA, USA]
[Current Mood | chipper]

Who wants to design a postcard for Animé Los Angeles 5? The prize is a pound of See's Chocolates. If you just want to be on our postcard mailing list, send us your name and address through this form.

We're going to cram an entire progress report onto one side of a little postcard. What should we put on the other side? We've got full color printing capability. Bleed, even -- you can have color and stuff going right up to the edge.

Postcard Art Contest Rules

  1. Deadline for Fall Postcard:
(Pacific time) 11:59 pm Tuesday 23 September 2008.
  2. Dimensions at 300 dpi: 1125x1725 or 1725x1125 pixels. Display thumbnail size, if you post your designs, should be 225x345 or 345x225 pixels (i.e., 60 dpi).

Design your art to be 3.75"x5.75" at 300 dpi, and allow for at least 1/8" along the edges where you won't have any text or anything vital to the design. It'll be 3.5"x5.5" once it's trimmed. So, don't have any text or logos within 40 pixels of the edge (1/8") and we should have no trouble trimming it.

  3. You can e-mail the high-resolution version to animela2009 at postcardart dot info, or just publish a link to it on your server. Feel free to send it to us early, as we may have some requests for minor changes (putting the double R and double T in Marriott, adding the accent to Animé Los Angeles, that kind of thing).

Or if you are sending artwork made from traditional media, such as an inked or painted piece, please send them to:

    Animé Los Angeles Postcards
    PO Box 17522
    Anaheim CA 92817-7522

  4. Prize for the one we use will be a 1-lb. box of See's chocolates, or something else if you're allergic or dieting. If you've used someone else's art in your composition, get their permission -- you'll be splitting the prize with them.

  5. By contributing art to the postcard contest, you are granting the convention permission to use it for promotional purposes for no more than one year. Your art remains your property, you're just loaning it to us.

  6. Don't use trademarked characters. People dressed up as recognizable characters are acceptable. You may include Animé Angeles's mascot Ala, and fan art of our artist goh's characters is usually allowed. Of course, your own original characters are welcome as well.

  7. You may enter as many times as you like.

  8. Please sign your art.

  9. If you would like to be put on our mailing list, send us a note. Your info will be kept on a computer in California, and will only be used to send you Animé Los Angeles postcards.

Questions and Clarifications

*raises hand* Just a note regarding the postcards and stuff - are these actually being mailed out? Because I wouldn't want to put anyone through the expense of mailing stuff out to Australia &D Would there be scanned, online versions, or could I have my postcards set aside and I'll pick them up at the convention, or can I nominate a friend of mine in the US that they can be sent to? (It's okay, she's going as well!) (2007-09-20 05:38, ryttu3k)

I can afford a couple of 94-cent stamps to send a few postcards down under. And if you're coming to the convention you're entitled to them to be mailed to you. If you insist, though, I can mark them "do not mail" or "mail c/o so-and-so." Digital images will be posted.

Can you posts some samples of what has won before? (2007-09-20 06:01, digitalemerald)

Here you go.

Is the contest open to Quebec residents? (2007-09-25 15:59, Romanadvoratrelundar)

Yes, it's open to everyone on the planet. We'll happily ship. Even to Quebec. See's has a number of different assortments. There's the Assorted Chocolates, the Milk Chocolates, the Soft Centers, the Nuts and Chews, the Chocolate and Variety... For one contest (different convention) the recipient asked for See's peanut brittle, in fact. If you have a See's shop near you, we can just send you a gift certificate and you can go and pick exactly which ones you want. All Bordeaux and Chocolate Cream? Easily done.

Unofficial Picnic on Sunday! [Aug. 8th, 2008|04:27 pm]

hazelchaz
[Current Location |Santa Ana CA, USA]
[Current Mood | chipper]

I'm organizing a potluck cosplay picnic this sunday. Details here. Noon at William Mason Regional Park in Irvine, near U.C. Irvine.

While it's not an official Animé Los Angeles function, a number of our department heads and other staff will be there. Stop on by and join us! You don't have to wear a costume...

Also, in other news, today (8/8/8) I mailed a box of goodies to Inoue-san. Eight different kinds of things -- Pringles, Maui Chips, peanut butter pretzels, vanilla meringues, cherry cider, cherry candy, this year's program book and a little pink hippo. The stuff added up to 8 lb., 8 oz. I made sure to put eight pieces of red duct tape on the box... and it'll take about 8 business days to get to him. Hope he likes it.

(For those who tuned in late, Inoue-san recently sent me some bear-shaped chocolates, nifty lanyards, canvas bags, tea, and other goodies, which I've been sharing around at meetings and picnics and so forth. Last year I'd sent him a bunch of See's chocolates and cherry cider... he had sent me some goodies... you get the idea.)

Back in Van Nuys [Aug. 1st, 2008|07:58 pm]

Alexander the Cart has turned up!

We're at the Airtel Plaza Hotel for Costume College, and in room 185 we're doing an [info]animelosangeles Peanut Butter & Jelly Room. Costume College's con suite isn't open during the day, only in the evening, so we've opened up our room to serve snacks and soft drinks. If you want a snack, or if you want to stop by to talk to us about Animé Los Angeles, come on by! We're right opposite the Costume Exhibit, in room 186. So look at the costumes first, then come across for some chocolate or an apple or something.

Costume Exhibit hours are 9am-5pm. Our hospitality room will be open 10am-6pm, and possibly at other times if we feel like it.

And I saw Alexander! I had a rolling cart painted purple, and it disappeared after one of the conventions I went to. It turns out I left it here -- one day a maintenance guy found it stuck in a closet somewhere, and they've been making heavy use of it ever sinced. It looks pretty beat up, but that purple paint job is hard to hide. So I'm taking it home Sunday.

[info]library_lynn and I will be at Costume College, in the costume exhibit (in or near room 186). We'll be there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Stop on by and say hi! You don't need a Costume College membership to visit us, or to go to their dealers room.

Look for us at Anime Expo [Jun. 30th, 2008|02:32 pm]

hazelchaz
[Current Location |Santa Ana CA, USA]
[Current Mood | chipper]

We'll be at Anime Expo, in the Dealers Room. Booth 367. Head towards the back left corner. When you reach the darkest part where there's hardly anybody at all, keep going another ten paces and that's where we'll be.

Okay, it's not that bad. Find NAMCO & BANDAI at the left side, go down Aisle 300 between them, and we're almost at the back.

New stuff: We'll have our new postcard and a newsletter, with pictures of some of our Masquerade winners. Old stuff: We'll have t-shirts for sale, and silly ribbons. Pick up one for free if you're pre-registered. And, of course, we'll be taking pre-registrations at the table.

Things we won't have: any food or drink of any kind. Sorry, we can't do it in the LACC and we're not getting a nearby hotel room to have it there.

Anyone want to spend several hours a day sitting at a table with me at Anime Expo, please? We have a chance of getting a space in the dealers room.

We won't be able to give away water or granola bars this time, more's the pity, and the hotels are full and too far away to do a peanut butter & jelly room. But at least we can tell people about our convention...

Recruiting Picnic 2008-06-22 [Jun. 8th, 2008|12:11 am]

We have a reservation at El Segundo Recreation Park. You can do a search for "El Segundo CA Recreation Park" and it should show you a map for El Segundo, it's at the corner of Pine & Eucalyptus. (Floor mops and throat drops, that's how I remember it.)

We meet at noon, we'll run until about 4 or 5 o'clock. We'll be barbecueing things, we'll have soft drinks and snacks and stuff... and, we'll have a mini "job fair" with various of the Animé Los Angeles divisions and departments represented.

Come down and meet the other people who are working on the convention! Find a department that you're compatible with! Learn about the "pass-on" system! Pick up some of our brand-new freshly-printed postcards! Look at floorplans of the hotel, which is just a few miles north of the park!

Summer Events + ALA Publicity [May. 29th, 2008|10:41 pm]

kumahime
[Current Mood | cheerful]

Hello, I would like to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute to ALA.
Thank you for using my illustration for the summer version postcard. I am so glad ^^

On with what I wanted to mention...

Anime Expo is coming up in July, and I have an artist alley table there. If it is okay, ALA can send me these postcards after they are done printing (hopefully before July 3, because that is when AX starts), and I can place them on my table and everyone can take one! I think that is the easiest way to get publicity, since everyone goes to Artist Alley now.

I am also going to overseas this summer, and since I have friends there who sometimes come to the U.S. for winter break, I can also give them postcards too!

It is only a proposal, I hope it helps you ^^!

[Current Music |"Late Night Double Feature"]

The Lost & Found box is now in my living room. (Near the tv.) It has...

A furry tail.
A boombox (capable of playing CDs).
Electrical cord. (Might go with the boombox?)
Five cameras.
A DVD-R with one word written on it.
A wallet. (Oh, it's got someone's student ID! I'll mail it back to you.)
A black belt clip thing with a piece of candy in it. Possibly for a small cell phone?
A feather.
Two bandannas.
Two stuffed toys, about 8" tall.
An artificial flower.
Five gloves. I think they're from 3 pairs.
Two hats - one with ears, the other a solid color beanie with a logo on it.
One pair of glasses. I think they're clear (non-prescription).
One empty glasses case.
One licensed-character keychain.
One retractable ballpoint pen.
Two plastic doodads in a small zip bag.
One button.
One earring.
One decorated hair thing (a barrett?).
One drumstick.
One long fabric sash thing. Solid color, 68" long.
A prescription lens.
Small bracelet.
Electronics a/v hookup cable.
Sweatshirt with zipper and a distinctive collar.
Reg bag containing a pair of ears.
Reg bag containing a small cardboard box and a hairbrush..
Reg bag containing a t-shirt.
Reg bag containing a costume, multiple colors, two pieces; a black skirt, looks to be completely unrelated although in the same bag.
A pocket program with a piece of art drawn on the back of a flyer.

I'd also like to remind everyone I've still got the 2006 and 2007 lost & found items, which include some clothes that I sent out to have dry-cleaned when that box got rained on. Including a jacket. And another headband pair of ears.

Recruiting Picnic [Apr. 17th, 2008|08:24 pm]

hazelchaz
[Current Location |Anaheim CA, USA]
[Current Mood | chipper]

We're having a picnic on 2008-06-22 (Sunday), probably somewhere near our hotel at a park with free parking. Noon to 4 o'clock, other details TBD.

All department heads and division heads are invited. You are, too, especially if you'd like to be part of the convention staff. It'll be sort of like a fannish job fair.

We're starting at noon. We'll have lunch available (probably barbecue something), and you can meet some of the people who are running things.

The convention needs to staff up - we have about half the number of people that we really ought to have to make everything go smoothly. Although some of the departments are full, others are almost completely unstaffed. Put it on your calendar now!

And if you'd like to come in cosplay and make a day of it, I'm cool with that too. Many of my friends and relations are excellent costumers.

Costume College question [Apr. 6th, 2008|01:02 am]

hazelchaz

[Current Mood | chipper]

I realize Costume College is four months away, but I thought I'd ask: has everyone who wanted to get into Costume College got their memberships? I've just heard from CGW VP [info]colleency that everyone who signed up for the waiting list, got in. So if you forgot to sign up for the waiting list, get on the stick! The packets with the limited-signup classes go out in two or three weeks.

(What's the Costume College connection to Animé Los Angeles, you ask? They send us volunteers to run our Costume Repair Station; we -- specifically, myself and [info]ala_mokita -- go there to watch over their Costume Exhibit.)

Considering our publicity... [Mar. 11th, 2008|12:34 am]

Who wants to go to FanimeCon, Anime Expo, Ani-Jam, Anime Vegas, MikomiCon, Yaoi-Con, Ani-Magic, Pacific Media Expo, or Loscon, and spend all day sitting around talking about Animé Los Angeles?

I won't be at all of those. (Specifically, I can't make it to at least two, or probably all three, of the first three on the list.) And the conventions I am attending, I could certainly use some company! I think a table with two people sitting at it is more inviting than one with just one. Plus we can keep each other awake and give each other comfort breaks.

If you've already volunteered, now would be a good time to remind me of that fact. I specifically remember talking to two particular people, in fact. Other conversations happen offline or via e-mail or AIM as well, so please don't take offense if you volunteer and we don't use you. (In fact, if you expect to be offended if your offer is not accepted, then please don't, thereby saving us both the grief.)

We're median-sized [Mar. 5th, 2008|05:45 pm]

hazelchaz
[Current Location |Santa Ana CA, USA]
[Current Mood | chipper]
[Current Music |Rheinhallt H. Rowlands - "Gwawr Newydd Yn Cilio (New Dawn Fades)"]

I've mentioned that Animé Los Angeles was a success. Our cap was 2400, and we bumped into that Saturday night, and turned a handful of people away. (Arguably we should have had a lower cap, given that the masquerade simulcast didn't work as well we'd like.) Anyhow some people came back on Sunday, so our final membership was 2509. For those who're interested, this was our 4th year; our previous numbers were 616, 1346, and 1875. We're still growing. We had lots of members from out of state, both pre-registered and at-the-door, including: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virgina, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming; from Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario; and one from England.

How does [info]animelosangeles compare to the other California anime conventions? Well, it turns out there are seven of them that reported their attendance to anime-cons.com in the last two years.

Most recent numbers available:

  1. Animation On Display (Aug. 2007, 782)
  2. Mikomicon (Oct. 2006, 950)
  3. Sac-Anime (July 2006, 2000)
  4. Animé Los Angeles (Jan. 2008, 2509)
  5. FanimeCon (May 2007, 12000)
  6. Anime Expo (July 2007, 44000)
  7. Comic-Con San Diego (July 2007, 125000)

We are the median-sized convention! We're right smack in the middle: Animé Los Angeles is the 4th smallest, and also the 4th largest. (I've got a hunch that if I say median-sized people will hear what they're expecting, medium-sized.) We can also say that we're the second-smallest anime convention in Southern California, according to anime-cons.com.
