So, I'm sad to say that my step-sister and her husband are looking to rehome their gorgeous husky girl. Unfortunately, Staley has nipped their children twice now and they don't feel it's a safe option to keep her.
Description from my sister:
"She is 7 years old, totally house trained, purebred and spayed. She will require a fenced in yard and can NEVER be off a leash. She needs a home that has no other dogs or cats and children must be older than 6 with no plans for more children."
Addendum:
The dog is food protective.
My sister is willing to drive within 50 miles to a rescue.
Basically, my sister and her husband are wary about rehoming the dog themselves. They're afraid they won't have time to properly screen adopters, and they definitely don't want her to go to a bad home. What they're looking for is a good rescue that can screen for them or take the dog and adopt her out. If anyone knows of a good rescue in Maryland that could do such, it would be much appreciated.
My experience with Staley while being around her myself is that she is a very, very affectionate and loving dog. She's also pretty well trained and obedient, though she does have that typical husky stubborn streak to her here and there. My sister describes her as a fairly low maintenance dog.
( Staley pictures! )
If you have any information for me, please leave a comment or email me at darksong17[at]gmail.com and I will forward any information to my sister.

"This beautiful little mommy (A311736) and her beloved daughter (A311735) had the misfortune of ending up at the very overcrowded PG Animal Management Division, stocked with too many nice cats with too few options. 10:21 pm - The Orsi Bill and the assassination of Animals and Nature! :'(
|

eleprue
|
Hello to everyone! ^_^ I am new here... I am Elena, I'm 27 years old and I live in Italy. Unfortunately, here a lot of bad things are happening and all the animals who live here need your help! Read and help us... I am desperate:
Nature is worthless. We would rather have concrete and double-barrelled shotguns in the hands of sixteen year olds, with which they can exterminate the last few wild animals that are still around. LIPU has examined the Orsi Bill and compared it to the current animal protection legislation. Franco Orsi of the PDL should call himself "Big Hunter" or "Son of Boss(ol)i". What we should be doing is organising patrols to check what our parliamentarians are getting up to. Day by day these guys are trying to make our lives more miserable. Here is one of many e-mails I have received regarding the Orsi Bill. "The Bill proposed by Senator Franco Orsi: an endless list of errors. Out of the Senate, in recent days, has come one of the most serious attacks on Nature, in other words on animal, on our Parks and even on our own safety: a bill that calls for the total liberalisation of hunting. Signed by Senator Franco Orsi. Animals used as decoys, hunting in our Parks, reduction of protected areas, the slaughter of bears, wolves and stray cats and dogs and many more vile deeds. Law 157/1992, the only existing law that directly protects the wild fauna in our Parks, is about to be torn to shreds. Here is the list of horrors: - Gone are the national and international interests as regards the protection of animals. Italy has an irrefutable heritage, namely our wild animals, which he is apparently no longer interested in protecting! - Gone is the definition of super-protected species. In Italy, animals such as the wolf, the bear, the eagles, the flamingos, the swans, the storks and many others, will no longer enjoy the special protection envisaged by the European Union and international regulations. - Hunting season open along the migration routes, something that will undoubtedly create a major disturbance and will encourage poaching in areas that are very important in terms of the difficult voyage and essential stopovers undertaken by the migratory birds. - Total liberalisation of rules regarding live decoys! Are you aware of precisely what live decoys are? They are live birds held “prisoner” in the tiniest of cages for the purpose of attracting other birds. This terrible practice is already permitted by the current legislation, albeit with certain restrictions. But Senator Orsi now wants to liberalise this practice totally. It will be possible to keep and use an unlimited number of these decoys. Gone will be the identification rings for live decoys. All that will be required is a certificate. One certificate for all of these decoys! Hunters will be able to use any species of birds as decoys, whether legal prey or not, even bramblings, chaffinches and redbreasts. - 700 thousand taxidermists. The hunters themselves will automatically become taxidermists, without even having to follow any procedures. Animals killed and stuffed without any rules. How many poachers do you think are going to spring into action to illegally capture and stuff wild animals? - Scientific research eliminated. The State’s own scientific authority (the “Istituto Nazionale per la Fauna Selvatica” or National Institute for Wild Fauna – currently known as the “ISPRA”) is at risk of being totally replaced by regional institutes. These regional institutes will thus be issuing opinions on national and European Union matters. Plus the very real possibility of not being able to carry out studies or research, or establish uniform standards valid throughout the Country. - Open hunting season in our Parks, for currently protected species. The incredible formulation of the Orsi Bill will make it possible to get exemptions (in other words, to get permission to hunt otherwise protected species), even in our Parks and other protected areas! Regions that protect more than 30% of their regional territory will be penalised! How offensive is that ruling! Those who protect too much “Nature” will be punished. As if creating a park, where people and animals can move about freely, were a punishable crime! - Hunting licences issued to 16-year olds. Instead of teaching our kids respect, we now give them rifles! - Freedom to exterminate wolves, bears, deer, stray cats and dogs, etcetera! An incredible provision that gives the mayor the power to authorise the slaughter and extermination of animals, in total contradiction of even the most basic of European standards. All that is needed is that there is be “problem animal”. A veritable naturalistic “Wild West”. - Regional legislation permitting the hunting of protected species. Apparently, four European Union infractions and two four European Union infractions Constitutional Court rulings were not enough. Senator Orsi is about to give the Veneto and Lombardy regions, or rather the Ultras of the hunting world, a gift, namely a chance to hunt protected species, and to do so using regional legislation. I suppose we will be forced to pay the European Union fines too! - Hunting in the snow and ice. Hunting will be permitted even in the snow and ice, in other words, those times of the year when the animals have a very hard time finding food, refuge and heat. Let me go back to the issue of using birds as decoys! How medieval is that! Owlets tied by their claws and wings and used as bait! - Less control over hunting. Fauna and flora guards will no longer be able to carry out inspections! In a Country that has one of the highest rates of poaching in the whole of Europe, what does Senator Orsi go and do? He reduces controls over hunting! - The “Ente Nazionale Protezione Animali” (National Animal Protection Body) chucked off the National Technical Committee. The number of environmental associations represented on the committee of 157 are reduced from four to three. “ENPA”, the historical Italian animal association, is completely excluded. Circulate this document and register on the wild animal protection lists on the various blogs and on Facebook. Let’s stop Italy from resorting to this type of barbarity. Nature is our life." The text of the Franco Orsi Bill (PDL) compared with that of the current law, drawn from the LIPU 1. Contact the members of the Senate Territorial and Environmental Committee that will be discussing the Orsi Bill. 2. Send an-email with your comments and/or suggestions regarding the bill directly to Franco Orsi 3. Join the group on Facebook

Hey guys! Bestiality is an action that is cruel and extremely harmful to animals. When put through such a vulnerable situation the animals have no choice but to undergo the horrible pain, fear, and torture. I started a petition urging the Florida legislative to ban bestiality in Florida. Please visit the following link and sign the petition.

4:40 pm - Pit Bull Mix Needs Adopted/Rescued URGENT!
|

gigi_bobbsey
|

I am posting this here because this dog is desperate. He could be euthanized at any time now, so everyone that knows about him is doing anything we can to find him a way out of the shelter. This is Scarface. What an unfit name for such a sweet dog! Scarface is a 1 year old brindle and white male Pit Bull mix. According to workers, he's so happy and full of life! He seems to LOVE everyone! He walks very well on a leash and would make a great companion for anyone, including single people or families! He was originally listed as fearful and seemed somewhat shy, but once he was able to come out and play, he was literally bouncing and prancing around the yard, enjoying play time with humans and other dogs. He is housebroken. Scarface's last day was supposed to be Thursday, January 22; however, because a rescue worker likes him so much, they managed to extend his time to January 24th. Miraculously, he has made it past this date and is still alive. If not adopted or pulled by a rescue group by immediately, he will be euthanized. $200 has been donated to cover the cost of his heartworm treatment, because he unfortunately tested positive. This can and will be fixed with the treatment this donation will provide, if only someone will save him from death first.
This is not a sympathy post. Please only consider helping this dog if you have the room in your home, heart, and wallets!
Scarface is located at the Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, FL. TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANCE FOR THE DOG MIGHT BE AVAILABLE! Please contact the below email addresses as well as Debra.Villella@ocfl.net if you are not from the immediate area and would like to save this boy. Contact me at afurryfriend@gmail.com for help finding transport.
If you are interested in adopting or rescuing Scarface, please contact ALL OF THE FOLLOWING: veronica@fldoglover.com David.Morton@ocfl.net Linda.Hepenstal@ocfl.net
Remember, even if you cannot physically help Scarface, you can help by passing this on to someone else.

2:20 pm - Animal Sanctuary in Puerto Rico asks for signatures
|

mariacotto

This volunteer animal rescue organization is using a building that was abandoned for almost forty years. They cleaned it and conditioned it without any state help. The local government has recently acquired it and now want to throw out and kill about 150+ animals. This place is a de facto shelter, run by volunteers. People who abandon their pets, throw them around here, because they know that they have a better chance to survive. These volunteers only want to have a place where they can continue to rescue pets and find them homes. They are a No-Kill organization. This is their official website: http://safapr.org/
I am only asking for your signature. If you find it in your heart to also donate, that is a very welcome bonus. But, please, please sign this petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/6/save-animals-of-puerto-rico
Thanks in advance.

7:35 am - Large dog walked threw the yard...!
|

wolfshadow
|
Hi all. Quick question.
I live in Syracuse NY and it's 10 degrees here with a -2 windchill, and I was heading downstairs for something when I noticed HUGE prints from SOMETHING in my yard.. not human footsteps, either.
I went outside since whatever they are tracked into my driveway, and saw pawprints of a large dog. No dog to be seen, however.. But we don't live in neighborhood with alot of dog owners, most people here have cats..
Either way, my concern is, it's a loose dog somewhere at 3 in the morning and it's 10 degrees with blowing wind and we have a foot and a half of new fallen snow and 6" of new lake effect snow on the way! Does anyone have any ideas I can use to get this guy to show himself so I can possibly catch him and get him care or back home? I work for a microchip company and we have scanners at work, so getting scanned isn't the issue.. but finding the dog is.
I've actually gotten two lost pet alerts for dogs chipped with my company's chips in the past week that are in my area, and I'm wondering if maybe it's one of them.. the missing dogs are both larger breeds (lab mix and pitbull)..
Any ideas getting this dog to come around? I'm thinking dog food, obviously, but with the snow.. it would just get buried, or frozen! I've never gone 'hunting' for a lost pet before, but for some reason finding this particular dog that passed by is very important.. I got a feeling he may freeze otherwise and that would be bad!

5:06 pm - URGENT RESCUE HELP NEEDED ASAP IN SOUTHEAST US (SC/GA)!!!!
|

branwyn32
|
x-posted so sorry if you see this more than once...
If you are in the Southeastern US, particularly Georgia/South Carolina, hopefully you can help...
The husky rescue I worked with apparently disbanded, or the head doesn't want help anymore as another foster, Heather, and I, can't reach him for love nor money. We have a desperate situation...
A woman in South Carolina has contacted us. She has had breast cancer return for the third time and is losing her home due to the medical costs, and being placed in a public housing/hospice situation by Thanksgiving. She has 2 older female huskies and they have no place to go. These girls are her only kids, and she is devastated she has to lose them. She also was going to have to euthanize her huskies because she can't stand the thought of them going into a gassing shelter in her area. They are 9 and 11 year old purebred beautiful huskies, spayed, housetrained, UTD on shots. We desperately want to help this lady, they thought they had an adoptive family but the lady got unexpectantly pregnant and has to move in with her parents who will not let her take in the dogs anymore. The woman with the cancer is extremely stressed because she cried when her dogs left her to go on transport to the family, and now she is beside herself because now they have to come back by this weekend. Vetting is provided, but we need a kind caring person who is willing to take in these beautiful, well behaved girls. We are out of time, they are good with other dogs, and kids. They must stay together, they've been together their whole lives. If you can foster or would like to adopt these two girls, please let me know ASAP! Better yet, contact Heather at this email: hntucker at uga dot edu Just tell her you are a friend of Amanda (me) and want to help the husky girls in South Carolina. Thank you!

If you're a Tampa reader, we have a few organizations in our area- ACT, The Humane Society, and Fix&Feed. Fix & Feed is the one I try to donate time and resources to, as I have no money. Unfortunately, the lack of job sometimes prevents me from donating even time because of the gas involved. It's a pretty cool org. that an older disabled lady is running to get feral cats spayed. If they're social enough to be adopted, we try to get them into Petsmart or some similar type of arrangement. Some of them have been cats lost years ago, but were found again! ACT is the Animal Coalition of Tampa. They do reduced-fee spay&neuter, and lower-priced shots.
I myself am raising three cats, some with problems, in a small one-bedroom apartment. I was feeding a stray outside too. She's been spending so much time here after being pregnant that I thought she'd miscarried again... but then she showed up at our 2nd floor door with six kittens, one who accidentally ran off the top of the stairs... kitten is fine, but that was a close call. We can't keep them in the apartment, but we can't put them out either. Our neighbor will call animal control. He's already complained about me feeding Flips while she was pregnant. In the meantime, they're holed up in my closet... but not for long. I'll have to put them back out soon. If anyone wants a kitten, they're about seven weeks old, prime time for socialising. It's only $30 if you take them to ACT on Lemon St. for shots, wormer, and Hills. Cty. tag.
Fix&Feed's site is just going up on Myspace. myspace.com/fixandfeed , e-mail fixandfeed@yahoo.com Volunteers for cleaning and caring for cats are always welcome!

Please.. BEGGING FOR HELP IN FLORIDA Here's the situation:
I have an offer for a foster home for Lyndall in VA. Lyndall is currently in a VERY HIGH KILL shelter as an owner turn-in which means that he can be *euthanised at any time*. If wewait until next weekend to pull Lyndall he will be euthanised before we can pull him. We can not board him temporarily. There are no kennels in Florida that will take a dog right out of a shelter and our foster who can board them has 3 fosters in quarantine right now and doesn't have the space.
If we stand any chance of saving Lyndall I need someone in Florida to step up and *volunteer to hold him until next weekend* when transportation can be arranged. That is *5 days* folks, not that long. Can you spare 5 days to save this boys life? He has already had a hard life. He has broken ears and has been dumped in a shelter by his owners. I'm pleading here. Go to www.malinoisrescue.org/foster and take a look at Lyndall. He deserves a second chance. Please help us get him to VA and his foster home.

 Free food for dogs
www.feedapuppy.com is a free online pet related trivia game. Each time you answer a question correctly we donate an amount of money equivalent to one spoon of dog food to the "Humane Society".
One correct answer gives one spoon of food to a pet in a shelter. 10 spoons is a whole meal, 14 meals equals enough food for a week!

Does anyone want a cat, about 1-3 years old, unneutered, that lives in the DC/NOVA/MD area (or is willing to drive a reasonable distance)? There is this sweet, sweet cat that now lives outside on our patio, and I just am able to get my own cat back (he stayed with a friend while I convinced my husband that having my cat is a good idea) and I can't push my luck. He's a very sweet cat and loves the tuna I gave him. I'm determined to find him a home, even as an outdoor cat.
Please let me know and ask your friends.

I talk about my experiences with Rescue Farm all of the time. It's my life and I've grown to love the work I get to do with the animals. Every once in a while, I experience more than just a dog who was left behind at the shelter, that is one who has been mistreated.

Last Thursday, the pound that we pull animals from called and asked if we'd be willing to take in a dog with broken legs. They knew they didn't have to ask, as we often take in dogs who have been hit by cars, need eye surgery, etc.
But this particular story is just so sad. IACC got a call that someone had put a 6-month-old Miniature Pinscher in a dumpster. Unfortunately it was the trash men calling, stating that they didn't know and had lifter the dumpster up over the truck and dumped it. LUCKILY, the pup barked and they discovered her before she was compacted! IACC went to pick her up and it was discovered that her legs were broken. It was initially thought that this occurred from being dropped into the truck, but upon taking her to our vet for x-rays, it was discovered that it wasn't.
Tinker's two back legs are fractured and her pelvis is SMASHED. Our vet's guess is that she was kicked, extremely hard, in the toosh. The worst part is that her fractures are over 2 weeks old! So after two weeks of letting her suffer with broken legs and pelvis, they decided to toss her in the garbage. THE CRUELTY OF SOME PEOPLE!
Although, she is unable to walk right now, Tinker is very bright and happy. She is on pain medication and is enjoying having lots of food, toys, and attention! In the next couple of weeks Tinker will be going through several surgeries in an attempt to fix the damage done to her legs so that hopefully she will be able to walk again. If the surgery works, it will be another 3 mths before this little girl will be healed enough to find a home and family of her own.
Rescue Farm is a very small operation that receives no outside funding. We rely on donations to help pay for operation costs like Tinkers. If you have any money or even well wishes to spare, please send some our way!! You can donate through the link on Petfinder.com or go to our website at www.rescuefarm.org and select the "Make a Donation" button on the left side of the page. Any little bit will help our little girl Tinker!! We are 501(c)3 non-profit rescue so DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
And if you have nothing to give, don't worry. Volunteers at Rescue Farm will sell our plasma, clothes, cars, and go bankrupt before we let an animal suffer! She will get the care she needs no matter what, but anything you could give, even if it's a buck, will help--believe me!
Thanks for letting me share this story...

"6y57yu". My rescued cat just typed this in passing. (literally). Since he's a good part of this post, I think I'll let it stick. Maybe it's his way of saying hi?
*chuckles* Anyway.. Hi. ^_^ My name is Aubrey, I live in Syracuse, NY, I'm 27, almost 28, have a crappy low paying job, and love animals. ^_^ (and video games.) And since because of my name and my screen name, most people assume me to be male, so allow me to clarify that I am female. :P
I'm going to be volunteering at our local animal clinic soon, as soon as I can get an address from them, that is- I have to thank my little guy, Ifrit, for this. So I don't hog up this community's page and people's friend pages, I'll put the rest behind a cut, since I'm including pictures and videos. :3
( My crash course in the need for animal rescue. )
( And for those of you who want to just skip ahead to pics and flicks, here y'go! )
Ok, well, that's all for me. Later!

10:18 pm - New member intro plus question
|

dirtgirl
|
Hi everybody! I have a quick question, but first let me tell you about myself. I am the proud mom of 1 rescued cat (adopted 11 years ago from a local Dayton, Ohio no-kill shelter called SICSA), 1 cat by marriage, and one two year old rescued collie/ Australian shepherd "casserole dog" (It's what my family call dogs of mixed heritage- a little of this and a little of that) that we adopted from the shelter 5 months ago. I've been married for 6 years and have a two and half year old daughter, who LOVES all our animals and would get 100 more if she could. I'll try and post some pictures later.
Here's some background before my question- Our dog, Murphy, has never shown any sign of aggression towards ANYONE. He very rarely even barks- I'd say we hear him use his voice about once a week. He's the epitome of a couch potato. When we made our first visit to the vet after picking him up from the shelter, I asked her to confirm that he was really 2 and not much older than that because he is so lazy. Anyway, yesterday a man came to read our water meter. Murphy was not growling or acting fierce towards the man by any stretch. I had just finished telling the man that he was friendly and not to worry about him when he turned around to close the door and Murphy nipped him right on the tush. The guy said, "Ow! That hurt. It felt like he pinched me!" He went back outside while I shut Murphy in our bedroom. The guy came in, did his meter reading business, asked if Murphy was current on his shots. I offered to show him Murphy's papers and he declined. At that point, he shut the door and left. I sincerely doubt that Murphy even broke the skin- it looked and seemed to me that he was giving him a warning nip, common for herding breeds.
A little while later, a police officer came knocking. The water guy had reported the bite, which, for the record I completely understand- I'm sure they have some sort of protocol saying that they have to report bites, but I think it would have been courteous of him to tell me that he had to/ was going to report it. Anyway, the officer gave us a pamphlet about the "vicious dog ordinance" and wrote us a little paper that he kept referring to as a "memo." He said we weren't being charged with anything, but if Murphy should bite anyone else, they may demand that he be put down and we would have to pay a $100-$1000 fine. The funniest thing about the visit from the police was that Murphy was outside when he came, and didn't even bother to bark at him. He came to the porch wagging his tail and sniffed the officer's shoes.
My question is, what can I do to prevent it from happening again? I have already decided that I will not open the door for anyone I don't know until after I put Murphy away. The thing that worries me is that Murphy has free run of our fenced-in yard several times a day to do his "business" and snort around in the grass and whatever. What should I do to keep him from potentially nipping someone when they come in the gate. I thought about putting a "beware of dog" sign on our gate, and the shelter where we adopted him said that would be a good idea to alert anyone who's coming in our yard that there may be a dog out there. However, a vet friend of my husband's said that he tells his patients not to do that because some crazies see that as an opportunity for a law suit. I want to know what you think. Sign or no? And, is anyone familiar enough with Ohio animal laws to tell me if posting the sign and the fair warning that creates is enough to release some liability from us? I really don't want to chain my dog. Please help! TIA!
