How could I have avoided this?

So I was on level 32, shooting missiles off at monsters in a corridor, trying to avoid losing too many hp. I had a good feeling. It magically summoned monsters, and then it magically summoned its minions. Maybe that should have been a clue to get away (I hadn't yet found any stat potions). I had 94/177 hp, and then:

It casts a nether bolt. --more--
You feel your life draining away. You die. --more--

The latter "it" was a black wraith, six levels out of depth.

I'm just not any good at this game. *sigh*

Hmm - harsh.

You need some basic form of detection by that depth I would say. Also, what class were you playing? That seems like a pretty small amount for level 32.

Summoners can be very dangerous, precisely because they can summon out of depth monsters.

I was a level 27 high-elf mage.

If I'd known the way the code works, I might have teleported away and got off the level when I started seeing those random summons. Monsters get a lot tougher around levels 36-40...

It seems like, above all, you need to be careful playing this game, and I'm never that careful.

I generally do the following everytime the screen moves:
m a h m a b

i.e. Detect doors/stairs/traps then detect monsters. At least it gives you an idea of what you're likely to be coming up against. A nether bolt is pretty harsh though!

But yeah - teleport away and then rest up at the very least.

One lesson that I've learned about the *band series: 'don't be afraid to run.' There is almost nothing in the game worth hanging around on a level for to consider exiting when it looks like you're in trouble.

Get scrolls of Teleport Level whenever you can afford them. Know where your stairs are at all times. As soon as you see something summon more monsters, get off the level. Especially as a mage, because your MP represents a finite ability to fight -- once that's gone, you're done -- and it also happens to be your way to escape.

If you can't Teleport Level away, Teleport out of their LOS at the very least.

It's mostly the shock you have to recover from.

it's been awhile since i played v, but iirc that nether bolt would have killed you at max hp.

it's wise to be cautious the moment you notice ANY summoner. i would get out of it's line of sight asap and cast detection, or teleport/teleport level if the situation were particularly nasty.

it becomes very annoying around dlvl 50, when almost every monster you meet can summon or is dangerous enough in its' own right...
