Why do I have such a small inventory?!
Aragorn the Dunadan Ranger (Player Level 40) had a superb feeling when he set foot on 2700'. After activating the Star of Elendil (the Phial didn't show up until 1950'! *grumble*), our hero noted the characteristic pattern of a Greater Checkerboard Vault. Rather than rush in to almost certain doom, he decided to clear the rest of the level to minimize the chances of an unpleasant encounter in the event of an emergency teleport. Also high on his list of priorities was finding arrows to replace the stock depleted during a toasty battle against the Balrog of Moria and his fire-breathing escorts, most of whom never awoke before our stealthy hero introduced them to the Flame of the West (discovered significantly earlier than the Phial) on 2650' - there were some close calls, but Gandalf turned out to be wrong, for that foe was not beyond our hero. With nothing of interest (and no arrows) to be found elsewhere on the current level, Aragorn approached the Vault and used his magic to determine what horrors lay within.

Aside from several Great Wyrms, a Dracolisk, Dracolich, and other nasty undead (though fewer of those than I was expecting), the vault contained not one, not two, but thirteen uniques, each more ridiculously out of depth than the last. Sparing a moment to wish he were a Priest, mostly to have someone to pray to (prayers were in order, as he lacked most higher resistances), Aragorn entered the vault. One by one (or two by two where ethereal creatures were concerned), the vault's denizens fell to our hero's onslaught, aided as he was by the treasures (and arrows!) they guarded. They tried to drain his strength, they tried to drain his constitution, but Anduril foiled their attempts, and repaid their courtesy with carnage. Among those who fell to sword or arrow are:

Tselakus, the Dreadlord (darkness storm hurts!)
Ji Indur Dawndeath (wimp)
Draugluin, the Sire of All Werewolves (painful physical attacks, but a summoner, so must be fought hand-to-claw)
Fundin Bluecloak (not too hard)
Shelob, Spider of Darkness (she never got within 100' of Aragorn)
Ar-Pharazon the Golden (summoner + teleport other = hate)
The Tarrasque (stinky breath)
Hoarmurath of Dir (wimp)
Ungoliant, the Unlight (Aragorn had found some dark resist by this point, so she died by arrow)
Maeglin, the Traitor of Gondolin (responsible for summoning 6 other uniques! also, summoner + tunneler = hate)
Khamul, the Black Easterling (another arrow death)
Gabriel, the Messenger (at least he didn't summon other angelic uniques)
Thuringwethil, the Vampire Messenger (Aragorn had hold life by this point, so life didn't suck as much as it could have)
The Lernaean Hydra (par for the course)
Baphomet the Minotaur Lord (ouch)
Huan, Wolfhound of the Valar ("normally found at depths of 4500 feet")
Kavlax the Many-Headed (wimp)
Saruman of Many Colours (surprisingly easy)
Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw (wimp)
The Witch-King of Angmar (ugh)

Between the 13 uniques in the vault and the freak shows they summoned to protect themselves (thank goodness for permanent walls!), it almost feels like Morgoth and Sauron must be the only uniques left. Now if only I could carry all this loot back to town... I have more artifacts to *Identify* than I can hold (and I haven't played much since 2.7.8, so much may have changed)!

Yeah. It sucks to have to read recall from a spellbook on the floor because your inventory is too full of artifacts to bring the book with you. I ended up leaving behind all my copies of every mage and priest book (who knows how long it'll be before I find another copy of Tenser's Transformations?), a half-dozen Dragon Scale Mails, all my precious arrows (including 30 Seeker Arrows of Flame (4d4) (+17, +14) *grumble*), another seven artifacts (three of them cursed, though), a Scroll of Acquirement and a Ring of Speed (+7), as well as uncounted *Identify*-worthy exceptional equipment.

On the plus side, I gained well over 2 million experience points (Player Level 44 now!), a combined +25 to my stats (... pending *Identify* of all those artifacts), the accompanying 50% increase in health and mana and decrease in spell fail rates (huzzah! Aragorn had 14 Int until about 1700' - the > 80% fail rate on Identify was only annoying until you remembered that he didn't have enough mana to cast it anyway), acid immunity, and almost every higher restistance.

... and I don't have to worry about being ambushed by those pesky uniques any time soon ;)
