This Thursday, (sorry for the late notice, my brain is a might scattered) our beloved Jake Von Slatt is to be at the Groton, MA Library doing a piece for PBS. Details are to be found here.

My brother, girlfriend and I will be attending, as we live relatively close to Groton. Anyone else? We'd like to see some folks there! Either way, I get to meet Von Slatt, so I'm happy.

Unhallowed Necropolis

Cross posted to unhallowed_met.

I just received this image and thought I would share. Here is a first look at the George Higham's sculpture for the cover of Unhallowed Necropolis, the ghost and psychics book for Unhallowed Metropolis. The sculpture depicts the Ecto-Containment Suit, a device for giving mobility to captured spirits. The helmet is life size and was sculpted and cast by George at his workshop.

Unhallowed Metropolis is the gas-mask chic role-playing game of Neo-Victorian horror.
Been interested in steampunk stuff for the last year or two. Seeing things and going "That's amazing. I wish I could do stuff like that." Which now brings me to...

Does anyone know any good websites for techniques and materials gathering for making steampunk related jewlery and whatnot? To be quite honest the only real artistic/craftsmanship thing I've ever tried my steady hands at is sculpting, so I have no idea where I would begin to get into making wonderful steampunk items.

So...yeah. Any advice, resources of tips for a complete and total newcomer to the entire 'making awesome things' gig? Mostly interested in working with metal (yaybrass!) and general tiny things.

(My apologies if this or something simular has been asked recently/repeatedly. I checked back quite a few pages in the community before my tired eyes got...tired. The comm doesn't archive anything with the memories function.)

The modding begins!

Not long ago, I posted a few pictures of myself in my steam-gear, what I had together anyway.

And now, it's time to move forward. This weekend, my brother and I would like to begin working on some of our steamy gear and accessories, hopefully to have a bit of it in time for Connecticon at the end of the month. (If anyone else is going, let me know!)

A few days ago, he and I bought some wonderful welding goggles, and we have a bunch of Nerf guns. (Mavericks, longshots, and the C5 I think it's called.) So, we wanted to get a-working on some modding these things to make them steamy. We've loads of ideas for what to di with it all, but since I'm doing the painting I had a question.

How do some of you excellent craftsmen do your painting? Any tips and techniques? How do you age your mods? How do you paint something to look like wood? Basically anything you can give me. I actually used to have a couple of lovely painting tutorials for just such an occassion saved as bookmarks, but with my laptop on the fritz, I can't get to them.

Any help and suggestions you could give me would be wonderfully helpful! I'll be sure to post lots of pictures as things are finished.

X-posted all about.

The perfect stereo for listening to your Abney Park albums...

I live in Vietnam. The cafe is a central part of life here. They range from high quality lounges with leather wingback chairs and wood paneling like an old fashioned private club to little street corner affairs with little plastic stools and a little old lady boiling coffee over a pot of coals on the pavement and selling coffee for 25 cents a glass.

I frequently have lunch in a cafe called Cafe Hi-End where they play great old jazz music on an awesome stereo system. Until recently, I had only heard the stereo because I usually go up to the loft, but the other week I went under the loft and into the sunken main room. Along the back wall, I saw the most beautiful stereo system I have ever seen. I literally could not believe my eyes. "That can't be real," I said to myself. "It must be only for show and there's some digital cd player tucked away somewhere. It was all brass and polished wood and glowing vacuum tubes.

I have just seen the latest copy of "Nghe Nhin Viet Nam", an audio-visual enthusiast magazine. They had a review of Navison Audio's new amplifier, the NVS211-PSE. I couldn't believe it. These things are real.

More information and photos can be seen at the companies website here.

By the way, I'm not affiliated with this company at all. When I saw the review and the pictures of the other products, I thought I could make a pretty penny by selling to steampunks overseas, but I was disappointed to learn that they already have overseas distributors. Good for you, but not so good for me.
