matabolism
just a quick question- you know when you burn calories off in the gym- do u only burn them on the places youv been focusing on,- eg your arms when lifting weights or your legs when running. or do you think you burn them from all over your body??

also, my dieting plan was to fast/ restrict (and occasionally b/p) without doing any exercise but my weights not budging. seems to be completely stuck- do you think i need to start doing as much exercise as i can to get the matabolism working faster?

and, do u think purging speeds up the matabolism?

right. just checking if non-friends can post ;-)

if you lift weights you build muscle in that area, which means you get skinnier in those parts/tone them.

why don't you eat really low calorie foods like celery or something? they have few calories and when your body digests it, it burns more calories than you consume, so you're actually losing weight that way.
plus it speeds up your metabolism. if your weight hits a plateau and you don't eat/exercise, you won't lose weight and you'll be miserable.

please exercise. like go to a club and dance away. even if you eat a normal diet, you'll lose a lot of weight if you exercise a lot.

do you mean the act of purging? well, sex probably burns more calories than that. can't see why you want to use a method like that to lose weight.

listen- not all tried and tested methods work for each individual. you've got to read plenty of stuff and experiment around to find a way to lose weight you're comfortable with, if not the weight's not gonna stay off for long. it'll just yo-yo.

I'm afraid purging slows metabolism down as the body goes into "starvation" mode, holding on to every calorie it can but try negative calorie foods such as pickled onions, raw carrots, apples, blueberries, pears, strawberries, plums, satsumas, oranges, water with ice in burns off 40cals per glass, speeding you up. But NOT bananas, grapes, avacardos, peas, sweetcorn- these are not.

there is no way to burn off calories in just one spot of the body, and listen to the girls above me they're giving some good advice :)

you have got to be kidding me. there's no such thing as "burning off calories in one place." calories don't exist in specific locations within your body, idiot. you don't have like 50 calories in your thigh and 50 in your calf. calories are injested, metabolized (notice how that's spelled with an 'e' instead of an 'a') which means that they are broken down into a more basic chemical composition (because foods are made of chemicals- even 'pure' foods, such as fruit have different amino acids and vitamins), this is then used to power your body. when you exercise you burn off calories IN GENERAL. the place you focus on while you're working out is the place that will become stronger or leaner. BUT! B/P IS THE DUMBEST THING YOU COULD DO. it's really a waste of time and energy, and you invariably end up smelling like the puke that you've so gracefully strained to get out. calories are automatically absorbed as soon as you injest anything; therefore, it is impossible to get rid of all the calories on which you just gorged yourself. throw up all you want, but you'll never get rid of it all. also, because your body is being deprived, it's going to hold on to every single calorie it can keep, which means it's going to also slow down your metabolism in an attempt to conserve energy that can be used for the basic life functions, such as breathing, blinking, digesting, pumping your heart- all of these things require calories as well. also, haven't you noticed that bulimics are never really that thin (at least not the ones who don't do it completely full time and really refine their art)? yeah, it's because of those 8000 calories they just took in, they probably held on to 4000 of them right off the bat. it only takes 3500 extra calories to gain a pound, so you do the math. anorexia is a much more efficient eating disorder to have, if you must have one. you can look at those puffy faced, smelling-like-puke bulimics and know that they will NEVER be as thin as you are because they don't have the willpower not to eat. so if you're going to have an eating disorder, at least be somewhat educated about it, darling. we're a marginalized group as it is, and we don't need this sort of uninformed idiocy.

Just so you know, calories are absorbed in the small intestine, not "automatically". And just as you probably hate those who insult "ana", there could be people reading this who are recovering from bulimia, you insensitive, self righteous, arrogant bitch.

oh, jesus. this is amazing, really. i take it that you're one of those recovering bulimics? i don't hate anyone who insults "ana" (though i've never heard anyone outside of these ridiculously cult-like sites refer to it as such), rather, i find it amusing. eating disorders are eating disorders are eating disorders. every single one of them, whether it's anorexia, bulimia, or overeating WILL DESTROY YOUR LIFE. an anorexic is no better than a compulsive overeater when it comes down to it. it's just that anorexics are more efficient at achieving the end goal. you know this as well as i do.

additionally, from the annals of internal medicine (surely this journal knows what it's talking about): "With a recently devised method, calorie absorption during a single day was measured to determine to what extent phenolphthalein or saline purge reduced calorie absorption. In two bulimic patients who regularly used laxatives for weight control and five normal young women, even extreme purging producing 4 to 6 L of diarrhea caused calorie absorption to decrease by only about 12% of calorie intake. The theoretical basis on which laxatives are taken for weight control is unsound." likewise, dr. fabio piccini found, "In reality recent studies made in Pittsburgh have demonstrated that with vomiting you eliminate roughly 50% of eaten calories. Actually, a patient vomiting after a high caloric binge assimilates, despite vomiting, caloric quantities equivalent to a big meal." so there you have it. bulimia is stupid.

now, the final and most hilarious (in a completely obscene way here), is that i'm a recovering anorexic. officially. certifiably. 10 months in the hospital, %600,000 in treatment costs, 64 lbs. and 3 NG tubes give me the right to be an insensitive, self-righteous, and arrogant bitch. while none of this makes me "better" than anyone else, it gives me perspective that few have, particularly because i'm 3 years removed from it. i lived through it, and i hope you all get the chance to as well.

Just because you have recovered form your eating disorder in no way gives you the right to speak to someone in the manner that you did. She is having a hard time getting started and because she is wants desperately to lose weight does not make her an idiot. Its not a smart idea to do to try the way she is going about it (I would never want someone to go through what I have experienced in my life because of it) but you would receive more of an effect if you would speak to her with compassion (not pity and absolutely not arrogant) about the situation. There is one thing that you diffidently made clear in your idiotic speech is that you are a BITCH! You need to learn tactfulness. You be able to accomplish more if you are really trying to help someone with their problem.

When you exercise you burn calories in general. The factors that determine if you have more fat on your stomach or arms or thighs or whatever is your body type.

I've been trying to loose my stomach fat FOREVER, but it won't completly go away until /all/ of my fat goes away... unfortunately.

just dont build muscle! becasue that can happen when you exercise. and really doubt purging makes your metabolism heighten. i suggest you have a small breakfast , a cup of coffee sometime during the day (everyday), and then dinner. it worked for me!

I hope people don't have anything against muscle - not only do more muscular people burn more calories in any activity they do, meaning they can eat with out getting fat, but the heart is a very important muscle, and starving yourself enough will cause your body to turn to "eating" your own muscle. Once it gets to your heart, you die.

whatever you eat, your body holds onto at least 30% of the calories, even if you purge right away, so why ruin your insides and rot out your teeth? Binging will only lead to weight gain eventually. Stick to green vegetables and lean protien.

Actually, if you're restricting AND excercising, it drives your metabolic rate even further into the groud... I tend to do more of one and less of the other depending on... stuff I guess.

actually, all starving, fasting, reduced calorie habits lower metabolism drastically. If you want to lose weight and aren't totally freaked out about putting something that isn't calorie free into your mouth a few times a day, it will work better, because your body is fooled into thinking that it is getting enough food. Also, try to make that protein because it will give you energy and help you build muscle in exchange for burning off fat.

you burn off calories all over when you do cardio (running). when you lift weights you tone that. ex. doing curls will tone your biceps. but you have to burn the fat off your arms with cardio in order to see the muscle. but on the other hand, muscle burns fat, so keep weight training and doing cardio. did i confuse you?

excercise will boost your metabolism. when you fast your body slows down it's metablosim on purpose. so yes, excercise! :)

purging doesn't do anything for your metabolism

the binging and purging idea is not too good. check on how many calories intake you have during a day and altern like do 200cal a day for 2-3 days than 500 cal a day than again 200cal for 2-3 days and you see the pounds will come off. it works for me anyway
usually during the day i dont eat much and when i eat for souper example 2 celeri branches and a tiny bit of peanut butter on them, usually the nexy day ive lost more than 1 pounds :P:P:P

of course purging speeds up ur metabolism if u do it well.
i , myself , am doing the same think,i fast and occasionally b/p.
so here is how u purge well.
-drink lots of water while u binge and after
-dont use ur fingers, it only damages ur throat, just turn upon the wc and press well on ur stomach in order to make sure there is nothing else left.
i lost a lot of weight like this
