the amplificathon podfic challenge faq (2008 challenge)

what the heck is this [info]amplificathon challenge thing?
the [info]amplificathon is a points-based podfic-creating challenge. podfics, in case you haven't heard, are audio recordings of fanfic.

who is running this thing and why?
your co-mods are [info]anatsuno, [info]raz0rgirl, and [info]general_jinjur. they all three are in general agreement about podfic (they like it) and diversity of fandoms/within fandoms (they like that even more). they enjoy both listening to and recording podfic. [info]general_jinjur also maintains a multifandom podfic archive, audiofic.

the audiofic archive is heavily weighted toward fandoms that have grabbed hold of the idea and run with it, but we all thought it would be nice if we could help that to balance out a bit, in the interest of offering something for everyone.

also, we weren't able to find any other annual podfic challenges, so we figured why not?

what's the timeframe & what are the deadlines?
challenge begins April 7, and ends eight weeks later, on June 2 - right around the beginning of summer. because summer is peak audiobook listening time, and wouldn't it be nice to bump up the number of fics to choose from?

do i need to sign up or tell anyone what i am going to record?
no. that way lies overcommitment. if you do it, join the comm and post it! if you want to do more, do more! it's all up to you. no pressure! unless you like pressure, in which case feel free to announce your to-do list in your lj, and pretend we are breathing down your neck about it.

do i have to allow archiving of my recording?
well. yes. i mean, the whole point is to share the results. but after the whole shebang is over, if you really don't want the file archived, it will be removed. we only ask in that case that you allow it to be available for six months first.

what about crossposting?
you can post about your recording and/or link to it wherever you want. it's yours. but posting about it in this community gets your challenge points counted. :D

what format should i save my file in? what sound quality should i save my file as?
mp3, please! if you wind up with a different format, we might be able to convert it. mp3 is the most universally accessible. alternate additional formats are great too, but they may not be uploaded to the archive until after the challenge is over, depending on how much free time the mods have.

bitrate and sound quality are up to the reader. some people hear a tinniness in lower quality files, some don't. it's up to you.

do i need to prove that i have the author's permission?
we expect all participants to have a basic grasp of etiquette, and to ask the author whenever the author hasn't already given a blanket permission. if you wrote the story yourself, probably this step isn't necessary. :p we aren't going to check up on you, in any case. how would we, anyway? notarized letters?

what are the minimum and maximum lengths of a recording?
there are no time or file size constraints, but if someone records something insanely huge, extra points are negotiable (we'd likely do a poll if the situation came up). drabbles are okay, too.

how do i upload files?
well, you can use yousendit or megaupload or whatever. or your own webspace. or if the file is under 20 MB, you can email it as an attachment to audmod at gmail dot com. the mods will upload it in turn to a permanent home in the archive in as timely a manner as possible, and comment on your post/reply to your email with the permanent link.

i want to get the maximum points possible for each recording! how do i find small or unrepresented fandom stories?
find stories your usual way! do your favorites. but if you are trying to maximize your points, we encourage you to find stories in fandoms you are interested in via reccers and recs sites. larger fandoms have their own communities as well, and don't forget that just because a fandom is otherwise big and active doesn't mean it's well-represented with podfic! you can read your own stories, or other people's writing - that part's totally up to you. :)

some handy links:
[info]recsrainbow (multifandom recs comm)
the rck's recs (multifandom reccer)
[info]norah's recs tag, and her reccing the reccers post (multifandom reccer)
[info]thefourthvine (multifandom reccer)
[info]crack_van (multifandom recs comm)
[info]newbieguide (multifandom directory comm)
yuletide fandom index (small fandoms)
polyamorous recs (multifandom recs site)
and there's always del.icio.us, of course.

what if i record a multi-chapter story in multiple parts? do i get points for each part? what if i have an existing multipart project?
go you! and no. you can only count a project once. if you have an existing multipart project and manage to finish it within the eight week timeframe, post to the community and we'll count it toward your score.

who will win and how? and what do they win?
the people with the top 3 scores, according to the scheme outlined here (not including the mods, even if they suddenly feel really energetic, natch) get a prize! the prize is worldwide acclaim! (seeing how the mods and participants are in at least a couple of countries, this is pretty easy.) the prizes also may include: podfic covers; podbook (m4b) file conversions; a podbook anthology of each winner's works; custom read-to-order podfics; a shmancy prize graphic. SO MANY PRIZES.

there will also be a participant graphic or button or something. something pretty. :)

what is the end result of all of this?
more podfic for everyone! multifandom love! also, the first new-fandom file from the first twenty participants will be put together into a podbook anthology album, sampler-style.

I have a question! I really want to start podficcing like crazy and earn me some points. (I LOVE points!) But I couldn't find anywhere in the FAQ...is this a challenge to podcast other people's fics, or can we podcast our own? (I have some unrepresented fandom fics of mine I would love to try podding.)

you can do your own fic! or your mom's fic! or your friend's fic! or even your enemy's fic, as long as you don't hate them so much that you can't even stand to read their stories because it fills you with rage. :D

*jumps around in excitment*

So how does the point system work? Have I missed something?

I'm super excited about this!

So the fandom's that are already archived, are they the ones on [info]general_jinjur's site? And recording for fandoms outside this earns extra points?

*jumps around with you*

i should link more clearly to the points scheme, eh? it's outlined here: http://community.livejournal.com/amplificathon/1934.html

we're using a snapshot of the archive from 3/16/08, so anything that was already archived is on that list (in this post: http://community.livejournal.com/amplificathon/1757.html )

Can I just scream out, "YOU RULE!" in a grand way? (Well, I mean, not right now, as I am in class and the professor already knows I am not paying attention and yes. That would suck.) YAY PODFIC!

I am all in. ALL IN! Even though (well especially because) my wedding is directly in the middle of this and I doubt I will win. I just really want to see more podfic out there.

Can I help at all? I don't know what I can do, but just know that I am like a extra hand if needed.

don't be scared! it will be awesome!

let's walk you through it.

you need: a place to sit and record. a computer with/and a microphone (i use the built-in, so i know that's possible - but a computer mic is pretty cheap, or you may know someone who already had one kicking around). recording software - audacity comes highly recommended.

once you have those things, play around with the recording software a bit. then read some tutorials. then try really recording!

YOU CAN DO IT!

I'm so excited! way back when before IPODs and the such I so much wanted ff on audio. A few on a list thought my idea was terrific and recorded CD's we exchanged by snail mail (Yep - late '90's most of us didn't have much computer memory and were lucky to have CD recorders... my what a difference a few years makes)

Now this 40 something mom has barely figured her new IPOD out. I need to figure out how to record an MP3 file.. I have Magnificent 7 and Riptide ff of my own around here some place and on line. If I dig deep enough I have some 'zine slash stories ... Sentinel, Simon & Simon, a little of this, a little of that... just where is that link on how to record these blasted things (haphazardly pecking at computer while digging through fandom stash of papers and notes. Good thing it's 4am ... it looks like a tornado is striking. My family wouldn't be too understanding at the moment :)

Thanks for doing this,

PF

woohoo! i've seen places where fans are still trading xena fic on cd. :)

the linked tutorials are really useful! i use a mac & garageband, and it's easy. using audacity looks a lot more common, though, but i assume just as easy! and there are plenty of people around to walk you through it.

exciting!

it doesn't matter if the story has already been recorded or not, so don't worry about that. just find stories you want to do, talk to the author, and go for it! :D

Anyone know good, free audio recording software? The one that comes with my computer doesn't allow backing up, rerecording, or saving a file and coming back to it, so I'm ending up with a zillion one-minute .wma's that I'm going to have to glue together into an mp3 -- unless someone knows some better software?

I use a MASH icon because I am recording a MASH fic-- does that get me points??!!

What do you do if you aren't able to contact the author at all? I can imagine this being true especially for older fics, where the author no longer uses any of the contact info available, has changed usernames, etc.

that's a problem. where is the fic posted? can you figure out anyone who might know them? did you try googling to see if the story might be posted someplace else, with good contact info attached? depending on the fandom, you may be able to ask around, too.

I just found out about this or I would have asked earlier. I am wondering, if you are an author who would be quite tickled if her audiofic were recorded, but didn't have any recording equipment of her own, is there (or could there be created) some mechanism to communicate that to the participants of this challenge?

I have several Grey's Anatomy and Farscape stories I think would be great, and I'm sure there are lots of other people who would find this awesome even though they don't have mics.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]podmod
2008-04-12 04:51 pm UTC (link)
yay!

well, we didn't include an "authors whose works are fair game" signup for a couple of reasons - the main one is that i've seen a couple of comms not get past that point, and i wanted to emphasize the role of the reader as a creative force. (this is where my whole "secondary fanworks, they're great" essay goes. i'll spare you.) (you may have noticed that i switched from we to i in this paragraph. it's because while the challenge was designed by consensus, i'm really bossy.)

another reason is that i would feel really bad if i encouraged a bunch of authors to offer permission and their fics weren't used. which is less reasonable, but i would have felt like i had made an implicit guarantee. possibly i need to just stop feeling that way.

but this thing is rolling along at a fair rate, so the first item isn't an issue. so i think we have a couple of options.

1) we encourage authors to post declaring their fic fair game, with blanket permission or with stated exceptions. the individual posts get an "author permission" tag, and i find a theme that is more tag-friendly, or point the website link to a tag list, or something.

2) we make a central author permission post and authors comment there. i either do something about tags (as above) or put a sticky post up pointing at relevant info.

i am thinking i really need to make the tag/sticky post changes anyway, for better usability, so either one is workable. #2 takes more ongoing mod maintenance, but i think it's something we can take on easily. also, it seems to me that authors may be more comfortable making a comment than making a post.

there may also be an option 3. got any ideas?

okay. i'm going to point my co-mods here to see if *they* have ideas (this is [info]general_jinjur speaking).

thank you for bringing it up!

Enlightenment, please, as I'm still a bit new to all this. I need a steer on the exact meaning of "pairing", especially since points are at stake. :) I've just podficced a LOTR Faramir/Eowyn story - no problem describing that married relationship as a pairing. However, I'm about to start on a Faramir/Arwen fic where everything is scrupulously above board and there's not even a whiff of romance or hanky panky. ;) Would it be inaccurate, then, to describe that as a "pairing"?

okay, well: if it's friendship fic, then the "pairing" would be gen. if there's a whiff of romance (or, you know, stress relief), then it would be faramir/arwen. does that help?

nope - go ahead and post them as you finish them! we're easy like that - ten different stories in one post, or one story broken up into ten posts, we are happy either way. :D
