Abroad in Paris [18 Jul 2009|06:19pm]

Hello!

Just joined, and I'm SO glad I found this community! I'll be a Senior in college this Fall, so that means it's graduate school time. I studied abroad in Paris, and fell in love with the city! I'm hoping to go back for graduate school, and even found the school I want to attend. EICAR. I visited the campus, saw the facilities, met some professors and was even given a DVD of the movies some of the students had made. The school helps people find housing - though you have to start super early, - so that's not really an issue.

My question, however, is about finding a job. I speak french - it's my current major with a film minor - so that's not going to be a concern, but I wonder what sorts of french jobs I could do and/or how to go about looking for them. I'm also concerned about finances, and paying for the program, so I was wondering how any of it managed to make it work abroad.

I really want to live abroad, so I want to do as much as I can to make this work!

Thanks for your help!

Bachelor's degree in Germany [10 Jul 2009|03:29pm]

imaginer8614
Hi, I am going to be a high school senior in the Fall and therefore am trying to figure out what to do after high school. I had an amazing German teacher this past year and she suggested studying in Germany for at first a year (because I have absolutely no idea what I want to do in the future.) I am actually considering doing this. I love, love German so I think I would enjoy it. So my question is how hard is it for an American student to study for their bachelor's in Germany? I am specifically looking at Kiel (because this teacher is moving back there and would be able to help me) I have taken German since 7th grade and so I'm pretty okay with the language. Does anybody have any experience with this type of thing?

Alright... I'm not an expat yet, but I will be soon, hopefully.

Like my LJ says numerous times over:
My name is Loren.  I'm soon starting my senior year in high school, and I'm applying to the American University of Beirut (or WILL be as soon as they get their new applications up...).  It's been my dream to go there since I was thirteen.

My family lived in Beirut for 25 years, before they were forced to leave the country....  My father grew up there, my uncles grew up there, my grandmother still cooks Lebanese food and my grandparents still speak to each other in Arabic sometimes.  Even though I've never lived in Lebanon myself, I love it, as everyone does, and I do want to experience living there for myself.

I've made this journal specifically to chronicle my process of getting to Lebanon, and afterwards, living there, inshalla.  If that interests you at all, please do add me!

Cell Phones [02 Jul 2009|03:36pm]

I checked the memories but didn't find what I was looking for, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out! Anyways, I'm traveling to Spain tonight and I have a 6 hour lay over in Paris. I'd like to buy a pre-pay cell phone in my free time at the airport. Will I be able to use it in Spain? Will it cost more since I bought it in France but I'll be using it in Spain? Sorry if these are silly questions, but I honestly don't know!

Thank you in advance! :)

Charities in Rome that accept clothing donations? [28 Jun 2009|03:13pm]

Hey everyone!

I was just wondering if any of you knew of any charities, stores, etc. in Rome, Italy that accept clothing donations.  I am currently studying abroad with 25 other girls and we are leaving tomorrow- hence a lot of clothing, shoes and so on that doesn't fit into people's bags is just hitting the trash can.  I've googled everything under the sun and haven't been able to find a single place in the city that will take these donations.

I'm willing to travel a little bit as well- anywhere the metro will take me- so I'm open to suggestions that are slightly outside Rome as well.

Thank you so much!

studying in rome [28 Jun 2009|12:40am]

verbalizingit
I'm leaving for Rome this Wednesday and have a few basic questions.

Should I bring my laptop? My program is at John Cabot University and their website says it's not necessary, but I kind of want to bring it. However it's fairly new and after my program ends I'll be traveling abroad for 2 weeks.

Cell phones? Should I buy/rent one?

Weather? I assumed it was hot in Rome 24/7 but apparently it gets cold at night and it rains often, so I hear.

What's the easiest/cheapest way to travel around Europe? Train or low cost airplanes? I really want to travel to Amsterdam, but it looks a bit far.

Hostel advice? I might be traveling alone for a week, and don't really know what to expect.

Electronic ?s
I bought a converter for my plugs, and it only has one adapter plug. Do I need more?
Easiest way to upload pictures? I have a 4GB mem card right now, should I get another one?
Easiest way to charge my iPod?

Any other Rome advice?! I'm getting a little nervous about it and will probably be freaking out as it gets closer.

Fire Your Travel Agent [24 Jun 2009|04:23pm]

and pack your bags, cuz I discovered a gold mine of opportunity.

This post is for Asia Expats, or people looking to travel around Asia.

http://www.cebupacificair.com/index.html <-- Looking at the prices here made me cry. I could have NOT spent 95% of the money I spent on my round trip ticket to KUL this winter... Coverage and flight frequency isn't as good, but they'll get you to SE Asia.

http://www.airasia.com/ <-- This one is quite well known but is slightly more "expensive", but has more destinations within SE Asia than Cebu, AND also flies to UK and AUS.

http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/ <-- You surely know them, but the best deals are on the website. They're bigger, but have to compete with AA in their home market, so the prices are, compared with what we're used to, still very competitive.

Share experiences with these carriers or link us to more budget airlines if you got 'em.

Hello~ [23 Jun 2009|11:09pm]

quetaine
I'll be a senior this September. Anyways, I am desperate to travel abroad. I figure that studying abroad is one of the best ways to do this. I honestly don't care what country I study in, although I do have a few favorites. Pref. Europe. Since I will be completely independent from my parents (hopefully not until after I graduate) I have limited money, so if I can find something cheaper than a expensive study abroad program, that'd be nice. I'm doing Running Start, with a focus in psychology, so hopefully I'll have finished my Associates of Arts degree by the time I graduate.

Anyways, my question is- can anyone give me some advice to studying abroad? Is it possible to carry a Associates degree over to some colleges? Can you point me to some colleges/sites?

Thanks!

Spanish/French Train Issue [23 Jun 2009|03:33pm]

cosmicwonder
[ mood | confused ]

My boyfriend and I would like to take a train from San Sebastian, Spain to Paris on June 30th. In order to do this, we would have to change trains in Hendaye, France. Today we went to the train ticket counter in Madrid where the RENFE employee claimed that he could not make a reservation for us from Hendaye, France to Paris, only from San Sebastian to Hendaye. Honestly, I find this a bit odd because yesterday, I took a train from Paris to Irun, Spain and then another from Irun, Spain to Madrid - both of which were reserved for me by an SNCF (French) employee in Paris.

I feel stuck - we don't want to be stranded in Hendaye because there isn't room for us on the connecting train. Do you know how we can make a reservation for this train if we are not currently in France?

Thank you for your help!

Off topic: Support for LiveJournal User Advisory Board nomination [17 Jun 2009|04:02pm]

partly_bouncy
I'm one of your friendly neighborhood moderators. I rarely post any favors or admin related issues because this community has been really calm and easy to moderate. There are very few off topic posts. Most of the comments are civil and helpful. I really, really appreciate it. :)

That said, I would like to ask for a small favor. I'm running for LiveJournal's User Advisory Board. I need 300 votes to get on the ballot. I currently only have 54 and the nominating period ends Friday. I would really appreciate it if any members of the community could post a comment that says "I support this nomination." That's all you need to do. :) If you can't, that's cool and thanks for the reading. (Details about the election can be found here.)

On topic: I'm going to Australia in about a month. I'm going to see Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney. I'm going low budget. Any things I should see? Any things I should really do? What is the best food that I cannot leave with out eating? Any recommendations for places to eat out?

last minute questions [14 Jun 2009|03:45pm]

Hey kids!

So T-minus 3 days until I head to London for my first study abroad experience.  I'm going to be going to the University of Westminster and staying in the Victoria area.  My first question is: Does anyone have any recommendations for rad and cheap hangouts/pubs in that area?  Of course, I'm going to ask around once I get there, but I thought it would be interesting to hear where you all suggest.

My second question might be considered "inappropriate", but hopefully not.  I'm a smoker, but know very very little about European cigarettes.  I was wondering if anyone knew the general equivalent of Marlboro 27s or Lights.  Again, I'm a student on a budget, so I have to be keen on cost.

Thanks guys!

Montpellier/Tangiers/Train tickets [14 Jun 2009|02:07am]

2kool4skoolr4u
I'll be in Montpellier for two months this summer, but I need to stay at a hostel or hotel for a few days before I move into housing. Can anyone recommend good hostels/hotels? Are there particular ones that I should avoid?

Also, my friend and I are going to Tangiers, Morocco for a couple of days. We're both 20/girls. We're kind of concerned about how to dress. Is there anything we should know in terms of respecting the culture and staying safe?

If you have anything else to add about Montpellier and Tangiers, I'd really appreciate it!

Oh, and suggestions about cheap train tickets are welcome, too. We'll be traveling from France, through Spain, and then from Gibraltar to Tangiers.

Thanks in advance!

Just Landed [13 Jun 2009|06:03pm]

Hi, just flew into Taiwan where I'm teaching for a year. I'm being put up in an appartment by my school. Normally when I travel I stay in hostels and meet all sorts, but here I'm on my own and starting to get lonely. Once I get settled in I'm sure I'll meet people, but for the moment I'm feeling really isolated. Any tips on meeting people, even if it's just an hour or so. Has anyone been in Taipei and can recomend places to hang out. Also, if anyone has any tips for meeting geeks in Taiwan, I'd appreciate it.

Teaching English/other jobs abroad [13 Jun 2009|07:55am]

lovelyanswers
Are there any good programs for teaching English in Germany (specifically Berlin) or Sweden (ideally Stockholm)? Google search results aren't very helpful. I've never actually heard of anyone teaching English in Germany, but I think it's possible. Scandinavians don't exactly need help learning English, so I highly doubt I'll find anything there, but who knows.

What other relatively easy ways could I work and live in Germany or Sweden/Scandinavia? I guess I could always go to grad school.

I would also consider Paris. A friend recommended a program for Paris but it required proficiency in French, which I lack. And if all else fails, I'd consider Seoul. Does anyone have experience with the CIEE Teach Abroad program in Seoul? Though I'm sure there must be better and cheaper options than CIEE out there.

Thanks!
