"This House welcomes the decision by the Court of Appeal to endorse the Chagos Islanders right to return; notes that the Chagossians were disgracefully removed from the islands over 30 years ago and since then have fought a tenacious and brave campaign to win their right of return; calls upon HMG to accept the decisions of the both the High Court (2006) and the Court of Appeal (23 May 2007) which upholds their right to return to their homeland of the Chagos Island; and further calls upon the Foreign Office to meet the Chagos representatives to plan for their return, and to invest in resources in rebuilding the infrastructure of the islands rather than wasting further money on court cases which are designed to deny the islanders their basic human rights; and congratulates Olivier Bancoult and his colleagues, their solicitor Richard Gifford and their barrister, Sir Sydney Kintridge for their brilliant advocacy in this wholly worthwhile and just cause."

World Fair Trade Day

Dear all

Saturday 12 May is World Fair Trade Day. The term 'Fair Trade' covers a broad
range of Third World products, such as handicrafts, jewellery and clothes,
which have been manufactured with respect for traditionally marginalised
workers. Many of these products are not yet eligible for the FAIRTRADE Mark as
international Fairtrade criteria for these product categories have not yet been
developed. World Fair Trade Day raises awareness of fair trade in this wider
sense.

On Saturday, Canterbury will celebrate the occasion with its second Foodprints
Fair in St George's pedestrianised area (between M&S and Fenwick's) between 9am
and 5pm. The aim of the fair is to encourage shoppers to think about the social
and environmental footprints left by our shopping choices. There will be a
large Traidcraft stall; Eco4 will be selling Fairtrade coffee and Siesta and
BabyLove will be selling a range of fairly traded clothes and other goods.
There will also be musical entertainment in the afternoon provided by a folk
group. Foodprints is a joint project with Canterbury City Centre Management,
and we are extremely grateful to Philippe Esclasse and Maureen Hawkes for all
that they have done to make it possible.

On display at the Fair will be the Fair Trade Organisation banner. This banner
is now on the final leg of a Global Journey which began in India in January 2004
and has taken it through over 40 countries in Asia, Africa and North and South
America. In each country, the banner has visited producer organisations,
importers and retailers who collectively form the International Federation of
Alternative Trade, IFAT. Over the last month, the banner has travelled the
length of the UK, from Edinburgh via Wales to London. Canterbury will have the
distinction of providing the final celebration of the banner's UK journey before
it heads for Belgium.

If you are coming into Canterbury city centre tomorrow, do drop by and say
hello. A team of volunteers from the Network will be helping run the
Traidcraft Stall at the fair.

The local Green Party is organising a showing of Al Gore's film, An Inconvenient Truth, on Thursday 26 April at 7.30 in the Environment Centre in St Alphege Lane, Canterbury (see attachment). This oscar-winning documentary has been a wake up call on climate change and has had a considerable impact on governments across the world. If you haven't already seen it, don't miss this opportunity!

Christian Aid, Oxfam and the WDM have all launched big campaigns on climate change in order to address the devastating impact which it is likely to have on developing countries. A Cut the Carbon march is taking place over 80 days this summer, starting in Belfast on 14 July and culminating in Central London on 2 October. There will be Cut the Carbon rallies in Edinburgh on 21 July, in Newcastle on 4 August, in Leeds on 11 August, in Birmingham on 27 August, in Cardiff on 8 September and a huge rally at the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday 2 October. The first of February 2007: Participate in the biggest mobilization of
Citizens Against Global Warming!
The Alliance for the Planet [a group of environmental associations] is
calling out to all citizens; 5 minutes of electrical rest for the planet.
People all over the world should turn off their lights and electrical
appliances on the 1st of February 2007 between, for UK/London 18.55
and 19.00, for New York 1.55 pm and 2.00 pm, for Paris, Bruxelles, Italy etc
between 19.55 and 20.00 (all local time).

This is not about saving 5 minutes worth of electricity for that
one day, this is about calling on the attention of the media, politicians, and
social figures, telling them of the importance of immediate action! 5
minutes of electrical down time for the planet: this does not take
long, and costs nothing, and it will show the electoral candidates for
2007 that global warming is an issue that need to enter the political debate.

Why February 1st? This is the day when the new UN report on global
climate changes will come out in Paris. This event happens affects us all,
involves us all, we cannot let the occasion to show how important an issue
global warming is to us pass. If we all participate, this action can have
real media and political weight. Please circulate this call to your utmost
ability among all of your networks!

Make Poverty History - Follow up meeting with Julian Brazier

Canterbury District Fairtrade Network was formed in 2003 following a meeting
between local campaigners and Julian Brazier (Conservative MP for Canterbury &
Whitstable) during a nationwide lobby for Trade Justice.

A year has elapsed since the end of the Make Poverty History campaign, and the
Conservative Party has launched a fundamental review of its policy on
International Aid & Development.  It is consequently an opportune moment to meet
again with Julian Brazier - to urge him to take account of our views and to ask
him to put pressure on the government to keep the promises which it made at the
G8 summit in Gleneagles in 2005 (see attachment).

If you are interested in finding out what Julian Brazier has to say on this
issue, please do come along to the Open Meeting which we are holding with him ON
SATURDAY 13 JANUARY AT 11AM IN THE DOMINICAN PRIORY (St Peter's Lane, Canterbury
- near the back of the Marlowe Theatre).   The meeting will last approximately 1
hour, and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

We would like to demonstrate the strength of local concern about global poverty,
so it would be great to have good turn-out.  If you know that you will be
coming... <please comment so I can give numbers>  

Fairtrade refreshments will be available from 10.30 onwards.

I'm trying to have a day getting organised and do some work for James Warlock, of Insight Clinical Hypnosis and I'm looking for groups and Organisations that would like a speaker/ lecturer.
He can do a range of talks and is experienced as a public speaker. He is happy to do talks for free and will travel anywhere within the Kent/ London Area. His talks are adaptable and he is able to talk on a wide range of themes from Motivational Techniques to 'What is Hypnotherapy' - A range of some of his talks can be found here.

He is also a qualified TABI registered Tarot Reader and experienced Mage who also does talks on Alternative themes which can be found at WSnBS, his secondary site. The cross connection between Hypnotherapy and Magick is an interesting new area and his training in Past Life Regression techniques are likely to be of interest to pagan and alternative groups.
