Hey guys, I'm just explaining two quick additions to the Althanas community that were made today.

The first, to go along with this brand new forum, is the new Althanas Moderator Application. Unlike the previous application, which was run off the forums, this one is completely forum-based, meaning we get it quicker and its more accessible to you guys. You can find it here. Moderator Applications are, like always, accepted on a "rolling" basis. What that means is that while we don't have a drastic need for a moderator/writer at the moment per se, we always accept applications because there may be a time when a staffer has to take a hiatus or leave and we need to replace them immediately. So I would recommend getting those applications in as soon as you can, and if you submitted one before the new application was up, I ask that you resubmit it. If you have any questions on the process feel free to ask them in this thread.

We also have another addition to make to the forum that I really think will be one of the biggest events to go on here, but for right now I'm going to have to keep mum on it while we work out the details. Expect some more news in the next coming days.

The rumors are true. It appears that the database back-up might not be so stable after all. I'm currently trying to work through it, and see what I can salvage, but it looks now that it might actually be riddled with errors. I wouldn't be surprised if we have to either restart, or make a new forum. I'll try to keep you all updated.

Well, it appears that the current Althanas database has been deleted. That means that if we're able to successfully restore my back-up database, all the posts that were made after 1/10/04 will be deleted. In other words, we're set to lose about a month or so of posts, minimum. I've been currently contemplating whether or not to just do a fresh install of vBulletin, and start all over again, with an updated EXP system and with completed web pages. What do the rest of you think?

Althanas looks like it will still be down for the next couple days-weeks. As of the moment, this is what I know:

-Everything on the main site has been preserved.

-As for the forums themselves, I have a back-up from the second week of January, about two weeks before they started exhibiting problems. What I've been trying to do is to see if the database from when the forums went down is still extant, and if it is, to restore it.

So the situation remains the same. It could be a day, or it could be a few weeks. This is the sort of thing that happens when you don't own your host server.

As of right now, the server that hosts Althanas is fixed, and we are currently restoring the database for the forum using our back-up. I've talked to Kris, and he said to give him a little while to get it up-and-running again, so it will just be a little bit longer.

Althanas Status

There have been a lot of rumors, a lot of hearsay, and a lot of speculation going around that Althanas is dead, that all the player information is lost, and that the forum is closing down. I've decided to take some time to first tell the story of what happened, and then to clear some things up.

The server troubles first began about a week ago. Some of you will remember that Althanas went down for a couple of hours, and then came back up. All seemed fine until about 4 days ago, when the server that is Althanas is hosted on began showing permissions errors. These errors first showed up in the weekly poll, and then the news. I shut off both, and after consulting with the owner of AllRPG, Kris, we determined that the errors might be due to Althanas being over not only its bandwidth limit (which we have been every month for the past year, thanks to activity) but also over its alotted disk space. So Kris sent some emails to the Althanas host asking what was going on, and to delete some log files that were sucking up a lot of disk space. In order to ease the process, we also made the decision that Althanas would be closed for a few days, during which time only the staff would be able to access it, and all the battles that were waiting to be judged would be dealt with. As it happened, that night the server that Althanas is on went down anyway ( I believe that was Friday) and that basically brings us up to today.

Let me clear up a few things:

1) The domain of Althanas.com is still the property of AllRPG, and will be forever. We own the domain, and will be renewing it in the next few weeks.

2) The Althanas server went down, and anything that has happened between the time it went down and now doesn't mean squat. If you see a page come up that talks about building a web site, that's a placeholder page only and doesn't mean anything.

3) The information on the server is probably not lost. But if it was lost for some reason, it's nothing to sweat. First, for security reasons, the Althanas forum database is saved frequently. The last time it was backed up was probably late January or early February. Or we could start over, and upgrade the vBulletin. There are many options to choose from.

4) Althanas is not currently switching hosts. We may switch hosts in the near future, but as of now we haven't.
