Nina La Fiammi at Dr Sketchys LA (1 Oct 06)
If these aren't alt, I don't know what is. X-posted from [info]drsketchy_la

Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School LA [info]drsketchy_la is something of a semi-formal underground art studio session using non-traditional models. According to organizer [info]katetritto, there are versions of Dr Sketchy's "school" going on in NY, Austin, TX and a couple other cities, but surprisingly it wasn’t here till now. The LA / Hollywood version of this is “is what happens when burlesque meets art school” and has a decidedly relaxed feel to it. The subject of this session was “Nina la Fiamma” . She is a classically trained dancer, experienced burlesque performer and performance artist in the Los Angeles area. A different model each week.

As you’ll note from most of the pictures, many of the poses were reflections of the classics recorded by Degas, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec. The beauty of this is that unlike art schools and college art courses, the models being used at the Dr. Sketchy sessions are performers who are comfortable with their body and willing to express a wide range of poses and positions. I’m looking forward to shooting more of these sessions.

Deep in thought

This version using flash causes the background to disappear and highlights the model only

This version without flash is warmer lit, but required greater care in balancing the foreground and background.

You feel the eyes upon you

She has many years of dancing experience. Very strong and very toned legs. I was enormously impressed with the grace and movement she showed.

This may sound weird but I would love to know how she got into burlesque... I have done Ballet (and jazz, tap, modern, etc) for 21 years and was an exotic dancer for a short period but what I would really like to try is the art of burlesque, I just have no idea how to get started. Do you know if she would be willing to talk to me about it?

If you can't talk to her, go to a show in your area. Talk to the emcee or anyone else in the show. They are always looking for new people.

My honest suggestion echos [info]that_xmas, in that you should check out the local preformance scene. Being in Tennessse (your LJ location), that might require some travel, though Nashville and Memphis might have venues. To contact Nina, use the link on my personal LJ entry. I'd also check out the Dr Sketchys LJ page and ask what to do or how to get involved.

Hope that helps. Sorry it took me a bit to answer but today's been a rough day.
