Savage on Autism. What a dumbass. [last seen: Fri 18.7.08

[ mood | annoyed ]

Wow. Spectacular idiot, this man.

Why does anyone even listen to someone this ignorant? He thinks Autism is diagnosed merely by observing "poor" behaviour? Let's just conveniently overlook the hours spent administering batteries of tests in order to determine such things as:

  • Executive functioning

  • Social skills functioning

  • Pragmatic language usage/understanding

  • Expressive and receptive language skills

  • Fine and gross motor skills

  • Functional behavior analysis

  • Academic achievement levels

  • Cognitive (IQ) achievement levels

If you happen to be a reader of my LJ who actually listens to this guy (unlikely, but I suppose possible), I assume you are smarter than THIS a-hole, and maybe you could send some feedback about the completely pathetic stupidity being promoted by his comments.

Also, this is a rather entertaining responseover on the HighlyPlacedSources blog.

What was the first music album you ever bought or owned? Do you still listen to it or have you moved on?

First I remember as being distinctly mine was a Johnny Cash train-themed LP, Rock Island Line. Or maybe it was a kids-oriented Tom T. Hall LP, Songs From Fox Hollow. (It included a tweaked version of "I Love" that did away with the "bourbon in a glass and grass" line.)

The weekend is just about here... two and a half more hours here at work and it becomes official.

I have a hair appointment tomorrow to get it colored. In December I had my old hairdresser back in CO dye my hair a chocolate cherry. I loved it for a while but it's faded and looks terrible now. Of course it should, that was 7 months ago!  I'm a little nervous since this is a new hairdresser. Since we've been here she is my third. I've gotten cuts from two others and now this one.... I'm usually not that picky but man I can't believe what I've paid for here. Where were these people trained?

I'm hoping that doesn't take too long because it is supposed to be a hot and sunny day tomorrow and I'd really love to go to the beach!

On Sunday we are getting up early and taking the train into the city. One of my closest girlfriends from High School is participating in a Tri-Athalon!  I'm so proud of her. It begins at 6:00 am though!  She assured me that I wouldn't see much of the biking or swimming anyway so just to get there for the run which is in Central Park. I can't wait to get up early, get to the train station, grab a coffee and a bagel and then hang out in Central Park for a while. Aaron has never been to the city - which I just can't even believe!  In recent years, everytime I've gone it's been just me visiting my girlfriends. I went quite a bit when I was younger with my family as well.  I'm not sure what else I want to do there when the event is over with. I'm going to assume that my friend will be #1. exhausted and #2. hanging out with her family afterwards.

I'm hoping to see a movie tonight. I can't remember the last movie we saw in the theatre.  I am dying to see the Dark Knight but Aaron doesn't want to see that - it's been a disscussion for weeks. He can't believe I want to see it - I can't believe he doesn't.  I will admit that my driving force to see the movie is based on Heath Ledger. It's not his untimely death that is making me want to see it - I've loved him in everything he's done and the reviews for his part are hard to resist.  Growing up my best friend (Jackie) loved the Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson as 'The Joker'. She and I must have watched that movie at least 67 times. I feel like I remember it very clearly too, so I'm anxious to see Heath as 'The Joker'. From what I've heard if he were still alive he would have the esteem of walking around knowing that he did a better job than Jack Nicholson which is a pretty high honor I would say.

My sister has gotten me hooked on watching "So You Think You Can Dance". I've never watched this show before but I'm hooked on it now. She and I watch it on Wed. and Thurs. night and we text each other back and forth for hours. We are both SHOCKED with last night's results sending Kherrington and Gev home. I am disgusted that Comfort is still on this show. I am convinced that there must be some sort of conspiracy there. She is terrible.  It's an embarassment.  I believe if the judges were in control of the results last night she would have been gone (AGAIN!!!)
I was 100% going for Katie and Josh but now I think I'm all about Will.

The only problem with him and Henry was they were like Charlie Brown and Lucy. The only difference was once in a while Henry would hold onto the football so Eddie could kick it--not often, but once in a while. Eddie had even thought, when in one of his heroin dazes, that he ought to write Charles Schultz a letter. Dear Mr. Schultz, he would say. You're missing a bet by ALWAYS having Lucy pull the football up at the last second. She ought to hold it down there once in a while. Nothing Charlie Brown could ever predict, you understand.
Sometimes she'd maybe hold it down for him to kick three, even four times in a row, then nothing for a month, then once, and then nothing for three or four days, and then, you know, you get the idea. That would REALLY fuck the kid up, you know?

*-) ça me convient... - Pauvre Milou...)

One week until the premiere! I'm going to purchase my ticket next Monday.

Midnight Showing on Thursday: (Probably not since I will be alone and don't want to walk around the city at 2 or 3 in the morning. This isn't NYC where it's safe to do such things.)

Morning Matinee on Friday: (Possibility, definite possibility.)

Evening or Night showing on Friday: (Too popular of a time for movies. So most likely no.)

Cheap Saturday morning showing: (Cheap shows are nice, so this is a possibility too.)

--------------------------

Oh, for those keeping track, I am now working my way through season 9. Season 9 is one of my favourite seasons of the X-Files. It's an acquired taste, like hot brie.

I'm attempting to plow through so there is time to watch The Lone Gunmen series as well, but that will be considered extra credit.

David Duchovny: I refer to them as old friends.

I Have The Power! [last seen: Fri 18.7.08

I was looking at my stats when I discovered that some people found my blog by searching for “xkcd kansas politician”.  I googled myself and found that I am #2 for that (without quotes). #1 is the Digg article.

Um, when did this particular blog get that much juice?  ABW has a high rank, I know, but this thing?  I’m boggled.

(Sidenote.  When I posted about that guy around noon yesterday he had about 1400 donors tallied.  When I checked at 1am, he had 2,894.  Wow.  Of course, this was more to do with getting links on BoingBoing and the front page of Digg than anything I did.  I just find it amazing that the internet brought in double the donors in 12 hours.  Awesome.)

I also seem to be high up in rank for any search containing the words william, sanders, rejection, and helix in combination.  At least one person searched for “pantiwadulous definition”.  Unfortunately, s/he did not find one here.

Since I now have all this power, I will use it in evil ways.  Since now this post will bring in hits from all that, I will nefariously redirect you to Fantasy magazine content this week.

We have a great story up: Watermark.  Really one of my favorite stories I’ve read all year in any venue.  You can also hear the podcast.  The author, Michael Greenhut, is answering questions about his story here.

For more fictiony goodness, check out the first chapter of Ekaterina Sedia’s amazing new book, The Alchemy of Stone.  It’s steampunky.

In reviews, my bud Mercurio D Rivera liked WALL-E. Plus we have an article about a fantasy game princess that isn’t a stereotype (those be my favorite).

As I mentioned, i have a column up about the Doctor and how he’s a jerk.  Some interesting discussion going on there (please contribute to it!).  And check out this video of firespinners, because firespinning is cool.

No Blog for a Beer this week, but you can talk about how much you love our new design.

That’s it.  Have a pandiwadulous weekend everyone!

*I am very cranky.  I'm letting Moo veg in front of cartoons until I get my act together and decide what our day is going to look like.  All I have planned right now is that we have to grocery shop, which I guess I'll do while he naps.

*These are pretty much all I want to eat right now...also, fettuchine alfredo and a canoli for dessert.  That would make me ridiculously happy.  With a snapple Asian Pear Green Tea.

*I took Moo to the Children's Museum yesterday.  I haven't seen him have so much fun since Disney World.  He played in City Splash, the outdoor water area for an hour.  They have a few water tables, one with magnetic fish and fishing rods, some old-fashioned metal tubs of varying sizes full of water and water toys, and then this nifty aquaduct thing with little boats in it, oh and a big water mill.  He got soaked and had a ball.  After he was done with that we went inside and played for another hour and I bought a membership on our way out.

*I bought this for the stroller yesterday.  It's great. first of all, because I can hang it from the handle and put my phone in it.  I can also load it with Moo's basic needs and hand it off to a caregiver without worrying that I've left my wallet with him.  I also got a cupholder strap.  Now, once I get opening and closing the Bee down pat, I'll be all set.

Since i was meeting hazel so she could pass me her portable hard disk drive (made in japan; damn good buy!), headed down to Spotlight to check out the MASSIVE (in their own words) yarn sale. There were lots and lots of yarn, but none i wanted. Ohkay, there were two that i almost bought. Carried those two skeins of yarn and walked round the store for a bit, before putting them back. Haha. Figured that i should finish/donate/throw the ones i have at home before getting new yarn. Proud of myself! :) But, still actively looking for Moda Vera's Salsa yarn!! Been wanting a skein for the longest time, but couldn't find. Ugh. Since i'm so free now, if anyone wants any knitted stuff, i'm your knitter!! Haha.

Still had some time, so headed to Taka and got myself a new tee. :D I keep hearing complaints that i have too many clothes. Have to find some day to take some clothes down to salvation army. But then, some clothes have barely been worn, feels a bit wasteful.

Saw this book at Borders which i was tempted to buy, but didn't in the end. Now i'm pretty convinced that i want to get it. The problem now is to find two other books that i can buy to get the "3 For 2" promo. Decisions, decisions!

Saw this quote while surfing randomly: "The world is a comedy to those that think; a tragedy to those that feel." I think it's quite true, sometimes we do invest too much and end up feeling hurt or short-changed. Oh well.

Bad accident at home. :(

Fic, Lost: And Love Is Not a Victory March (Sawyer/Juliet), R, for [info]slybrunette [last seen: Fri 18.7.08

[ music | hallelujah - jeff buckley ]

Title: And Love Is Not a Victory March
Rating: light R
Pairing: Sawyer/Juliet
Words: 1700
Summary: The fourth, the firth, the minor fall and the major lift. It’s translated for piano, but it’s pretty much the same. Not so secret chord, and Sawyer figures it wouldn’t please God that much.
Spoilers: up to the S4 finale.
Disclaimer: Lost is not mine, the song is Leonard Cohen's and Jeff Buckley's I guess, I'm poor, don't sue me.
A/N: Queen [info]slybrunette at [info]lostsquee asked for fic inspired by music, at which I very much am glad to comply, since it's exactly what I usually do. But since lately I've been all Springsteen and I figured it wouldn't make much difference and that I could use a break, please accept my meager offering based on Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, to download here if needed. Also, it'd be my first try at the pairing so please go easy on me *lays at Queen's feet with apologies for the delay*.

It’s all semantics shit anyway; it takes a preposition to change an entire meaning and he is well-read enough to think he knows the difference between loving someone and being in love with them. )
