Chess Poster

I'm new to the community, and haven't posted anything yet, but today I went to see Josh Groban at the GMA Summer Concert Series, and on the back of the poster, I painted the chess logo. I was intensely proud of it and it got a LOT of attention from those around me (usually those who had no idea what it meant). But, anyway, I thought I would share the ridiculous amount of work I put into making it exactly perfect.

It took forever to get the squares right, which I had to trace before even painting them, and excuse the lettering, it is a wee bit off because... well, I'm just not that good. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get his attention for him to make a comment, but hey, it was worth a shot!

</a>

PS: Excuse the blurriness. You have no idea how hard it is to take a decent picture at 4 AM.

A little shameless advertisement, just in case you guys might be interested in the Stockholm version of our beloved musical. ;)

There is a project currently going on in order to get the whole (Swedish) libretto - and with that, the DVD of the show - translated into English. I personally have tried to translate a few parts of the dialogue for it, and I think the guy who runs the project is starting to have the whole of the musical translated by now.

I think you all know that Tommy "the original Anatoly" Körberg plays Anatoly in the Stockholm version as well, and that it (both the musical and Tommy playing Anatoly) is made of awesome.

So, without further babbling, chesstranslation at YouTube. Check it out. :)

Title: Conquering the Enemy
Fandom: Chess
Pairing: Molokov/Walter
Word count: Around 450
Rating: I suck at ratings. NC-17? There's no actual sex, but.
Warnings: I can't say without spoiling, but suffice to say it's fucked up. And there's a NSFW drawing there too, which is a lot sweeter than the fic.
A/N: Mind-fuck. A bad case of "What the fuck did I just write?" But I think all the Molokov/Walter shippers I know can deal with the mind-fuck. Uh. Comments please? I don't write fic very often.

( Molokov has broken men before. )

And while I'm posting here, I saw the post about Idina Menzel in London Chess... I am more happy about it being official that Adam Pascal will play Freddie. (And Kerry Ellis as Svetlana.)

Still wondering who will be Molokov/Walter/Arbiter. I have tickets for it. :D

Chess Pairings Challenge

So, to start the New Year (two days late, but you know what, deal), I'm kicking off a challenge here. It's one of those challenges with a prompt table, but instead of the usual types of prompts, you get a list of pairings! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make some sort of fanwork for every prompt on the table. It can be a fic, a drawing, a banner, a fanmix... whatever. But it has to be new, not something you've made before, and it has to be at least vaguely shippy, not just a gen piece with those two characters in it.

Sound fun? (Well, it does to a pairing whore like me, so!)

There's not any set time limit or anything, it's just going to run for as long as people are interested in doing it. You don't need to make a claim, but if you'd like to post your table and have it linked on the master list here, just leave a link in a comment on this post.

01. Freddie/Florence

02. Florence/Anatoly

03. Anatoly/Svetlana

04. Walter/Molokov

05.
Title: Nothing Other Than a Simple Boardgame
Characters: The Arbiter; the Arbiter's family, Florence; Freddie and Anatoly are mentioned.
Word Count: 861
Summary: The Arbiter's life, from childhood to after Bangkok. Really, it's a pity he can't be by a chessboard all the time.
Notes: Merry (late -- sorry) Christmas, chicafrom3! The request I went with was Arbiter gen. Canon, pre canon, post canon, don't care. Just as long as it focuses on the Arbiter. You get all three!
Thank you to dreamsofstars, for the lookover (and for being enthusiastic).
Disclaimer: I do not own Chess. Or the Arbiter. If he's ever for sale, though....

i. Pawn
It takes almost ten years to realize how strange it is that he likes moving. Grandfather doesn't understand how anyone could want anything but a stable home; but that's why Grandfather and Mama don't get along, so it's not too much of a surprise.

It's exciting, and nobody else seems to understand that. It's not like Mama would move him before he was ready to leave. Which he always is, because meeting people, talking to people, learning from people -- it's even more interesting when they're not all from the same place. And that's much better than staying put.

ii. Rook
For his thirteenth birthday, Grandfather buys him a chess set and promises to teach him how to play while they're in Greece. It's the first time since he can remember that they stay in one place for more than four months. He learns quickly; he can recite the basic rules by heart and he can even beat some of the younger players, but he isn't good at it. He can't manage the foresight; he doesn't know where he's going three moves down the road, while Grandfather knows how the game will end six or seven moves into it.

He loves the game, though, and that makes up for it.

iii. Knight
He's nineteen when he starts thinking of it as a career. He's always loved watching chess, but it's usually unprofessional games. When he finally sees a professional tournament, he decides to become an Arbiter and nothing's going to stop him.

Grandfather gets him a copy of the rules to become a FIDE Arbiter. With two years to go before he can apply, he starts working on the languages. He already knows four of them, but it couldn't hurt to learn them all.

interlude. Castling
At twenty-two, he becomes an FIDE Arbiter.

By the time he turns twenty-four, he's lived in fourteen flats and five houses, in sixteen cities on three continents; he can speak five languages fluently, use swear words and chess terms in eight, and recognize eleven. He's used twenty names since his thirteenth birthday, but he only thinks of himself as the Arbiter, no matter how far away from a chess board he is. He excels at his job. He loves his job. He loves his life, as much for its lack of structure as despite it.

At twenty-six, he becomes an International Arbiter.

iv. Bishop
Merano turns out to be a nice place. Maybe, he decides early on before the matches start, he'll get a place there for a while.

Of course, the entire tournament turns out to be disaster. He's never found a chess player he can honestly say he likes, but he's never hated a single one the way he hates Frederick Trumper. The man is overemotional, temperamental, a complete bastard towards everyone, including his second (despite the fact that she is also his lover, and nothing is as despicable as someone who treats their partner in any sense of the word that way), and clearly a disgrace to the world of professional chess.

But Trumper is also good, and though he's glad to announce Sergievsky the winner, he can't help but admire how Trumper plays. The man is a clear example of why letting emotion cloud judgment is one of the stupidest things a person can do.

v. King
Bangkok is the first time he gets angry on a job. Not because of what the players do on the board, or even strictly because of what's happening off of it. Manipulation will always be going on somewhere; it doesn't bother him much.

What does bother him is how emotion threw the game off. Chess is supposed to be calm. Peaceful. Tranquil, even. The high levels of stress are not the proper environment for a game of chess. And while Trumper always generates high stress levels, this is worse that he'd ever imagined it would be.

Let them play their game, he doesn't give a damn, so long as it doesn't affect his.

vi. Queen
After Bangkok, players don't get on his nerves quite so much anymore. You deal with the worst and the rest suddenly seems easier. He's grateful for that; it makes his job a lot more enjoyable, even if the high emotion still makes him want to laugh at them sometimes. His emotions are seperate from his job; as soon as he sees a chessboard, he is the Arbiter, and nothing else matters.

Really, it's a pity he can't be by a chessboard all the time.

coda. Checkmate
Six years after Bangkok, and Florence Vassey is the only one still playing at a professional level. He can't help but admire her; her game has gotten better, and she's not a second any longer. Nobody who's played her doubts that she deserves to be on the circuit.

She doesn't speak to him during the tournament, but when he sees her afterwards, her smile is friendly.

"What's your name?" she asks him, before he can walk away.

He pauses before he answers, studying her, wondering if he should give the current alias or not. "I'm the Arbiter," he answers, and she nods as if she truly understands.

"But your other name?"

He likes that she didn't call it his real name, so he answers her honestly. "Simon Colonomos."

Title: Whose War Is It Anyway?
Characters/Pairing: Walter/Molokov
Word Count: 1544
Rating: PG
Summary: Everything went wrong the instant Molokov started caring.
Notes: Written for dreamsofstars. This is very much an AU - though technically not impossible, if some production wanted to do some inventive casting (which should totally happen some day... please?). It figures that I would write AU Molokov and Walter getting together fic before I write the actual canonical version of it. ...Whatever. I love you, Sarah-jei!
Disclaimer: I don't own Chess. Which is probably a good thing, or this AU would be canon in at least one version.

( Molokov wished fervently it wasn't in such bad taste to shoot your champion. )

A Secret Santa gift for enterincolor!

Wish #3: Graphics: An Arbiter-themed layout and userinfo layout, using Raul of course, with lyrics from either Arbiter's Song, the first bit of The Deal, or The Story Of Chess (is that the name of it? I think so...). If you can't manage full layout, just a header/FO banner/icon set works... although preferably still with pretty userinfo graphics.

To see it all in action and decide whether you even like it, arbiter_test!

All images -- including the header, comment image, profile graphics, and so on -- are usable as-is, and the links are already inserted into the codes.

As allfireburns noted, doesn't work with a navigation bar, so be sure to turn that off.

Profile codes:

Merry Christmas, Evie!

Title:
Characters/Pairing: Walter/Florence, mentions Florence/Freddie. Lots of Florence.
Word Count: 1000ish
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Florence needs.
Notes: Part 1. I admit that my conception of this relationships was more as an affair than love, so I'm posting in parts (or "Hanukah style"). This way, Evie, you can request any alterations you like :)
Disclaimer: I do not own Chess.

I. Merano
Everything is broken. Florence is thirty years old. She is a beautiful thirty-year-old woman becoming more beautiful as her age catches her and she fears her beauty fading. The exhaustion that makes her appear so fragilely strong Florence fears makes her skin sallow; she thinks her breasts are sagging, unable to realize that they no longer look like silicon. Florence doesn’t know how beautiful she is or how talented.

Today Freddie Trumper amazed the chess world once more. Lately every game of chess has been accompanied by the same series of questions. Will Florence play? Would Freddie’s pride ever allow it? What if she loses? How will this impact her relationship with Freddie? How will it impact his standing in the chess world?

It’s all he has, really. Florence knows better than anyone. She knows his scores, his standing, his moves, even knows the ten digits carved into the sole of his left dress shoe. She doesn’t know only what she needs to know: what he knows.

Florence touches her mouth. Times like this make her wish she smoked, if only for something to do. Utrecht is beautiful. Freddie won his game, of course, but the way he looked at his opponent… the snow is the same degree of cold and equally frightening. He used to smile at his knights and pawns, but now he smirks at his opponents. Too long in the snow will kill her, she knows, just as too long in Freddie’s attentions. So apt a metaphor, and yet…

And yet.

Florence stands and draws her coat closer around her. The stars are beautiful tonight. She imagines Freddie emerging from the hotel bar to wrap his arms around her. She feels his warmth and the cracked chap on his lips as he kisses her neck. He whispers something. Florence smiles and put his hand to her lips. She turns to reply with a kiss.

No one is there. The snow glistens and shadows crease the indents of her footprints. It is a perfect night to be alone. It would be more perfect a night with another.

She glances to the hotel. Did no one see her leave the bar, or did no one care? It spun like a soiree, and after vomiting she wandered into the stillness of the night. She’s here now and for the life of her she cannot think where to go. The room is colder than the night.

The door creaks open. Warmth and sound carry to her on a frozen breeze. Florence closes her eyes, and when she opens them someone is standing in the door. It could be Freddie… a stockier Freddie with a budding gut, less hair… who is she kidding?

“Walter.”

“You left the party,” he observes. He tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingertips are gentle when they touch her cheek.

Florence nods. “I didn’t want to see him celebrate that,” she murmurs. “Did you see his eyes? Freddie used to enjoy chess.”

“He seemed happy enough today.”

“To defeat that Dutch man, not to play chess!” she replies, distressed. He is not her Freddie. “This has become about victory, Walter!”

“I know… I know, Florence,” he says softly. He takes her hands. Florence realizes how cold she is. Walter rubs her hands. “But that’s the job. Politics. The match in Merano is set—he’ll be playing against the Russian. It’s political, yes, and whatever his reasons, Freddie will be the victor. It’s… it’s what has to happen, Florence.”

Florence nods. Of course, she understands better than most the politics of the situation. This makes it more difficult for her. She can’t seem to take a side. Florence loves Freddie, an all-American boy. Florence loved her father, a proud Hungarian man. But more important, Florence loves Hungary in her fleeting memories and the States where she spent her wonderfully awkward teenage years.

Walter sees the indecision. “Freddie needs you. The public only loves him because they don’t need to actually speak with him.” He touches her cheek. Florence is transparent to him. She has needs and Freddie rarely meets them. She needs badly. “Where would any of us be without you?”

“Spend the night with me.”

II. London

“Walter!”

It is not a pleased call. Florence glances down the road. She sees the usual crowd of houses, the retirees as usual seeing to their garden, and no one else, but one never knows who may be watching. Florence sighs. “You’d better come in.”

Walter follows her into the kitchen. “I like the new look,” he says. “Very… blond.”

Florence does her utmost to ignore him, but she hasn’t time for these games. Things have been wonderful with Anatoly. He is perfect, wonderful, balanced, everything opposite Freddie. Their long conversations are peaceful and ambling. They take walks together. They lie together.

And Anatoly is good in a way Freddie has never been, and Florence would know. She popped his cherry shortly before learning he was three years younger than he claimed. Aah, high school, hardly the good old days.

“You want something, I assume,” Florence says. She has no time for politics. She wants him gone before Anatoly returns, and Walter knows it. She puts the kettle on the stove, takes out two mugs. “How’s Freddie?”

“Doing wonderfully after another stunning betrayal,” Walter jibes.

Florence puts away one of the mugs. “What do you want?”

Walter touches Florence’s new blond hair. It feels like straw when she washes it. “I came to see how you are. And Anatoly. He’s working?”

“Yes—teaching kids to play chess. He also teaches them ethics so if they ever end up in a competition they’ll know to admit defeat rather than pretending the opponent is receiving secret messages through his yogurt. Tell me, Walter, do you think it less sportsmanlike to have a fit like that, or that he considered it a gambit?”

He sighs. “So you’re fine, Florence? It was nice to see you again.”

When he’s gone, she sits at the table, stirring her tea. Walter tried nothing. He didn’t make a pass at her, proposition her, manipulate her… All he did was visit and ask after her.

Hey, guys, since several people have expressed interest in it, we're going to be running a Chess Secret Santa here! People will be paired up with a prompt to produce fic or art for whoever they are assigned. This is a gift, so try to keep your recipient's wishes in mind. The final gift should be substantial, but not necessarily enormous. (No drabbles here, please - that's not in the holiday spirit.)

Rules
1. You will be matched up to the best of your abilities based on wishes and talents. You are only responsible for creating one item, but feel free to create more than one if you feel like it.
2. When you sign up, you will be asked for three wishes. Please do not request all art/graphics, as this will make your request pretty difficult to fulfill.
3. This exchange is open to fanfiction, graphics (icons, banners, whatever) and art. Please make note of what you can and can't do for matching purposes.
4. All completed gifts are to be posted at the community no earlier than the specified date (see timeline below).
5. If you need to drop out (which is strongly frowned on), please let us know as soon as possible so that we can arrange to grant your recipient's requests anyway.

The Dates
Sign-ups: October 11 - October 25
Matches Sent Out: Between October 26 and October 28
Posting: December 24 - December 31
After December 31, there will be a few days allowed for late gifts. At this time, backups will be worked out so everyone gets a gift. Again, please let us know as soon as possible if your gift will be delayed or if you have to drop out.

Sign Up Form
Name:
Email:
Wish #1:
Wish #2:
Wish #3:
I can provide: (fanfiction, art, graphics...)
Things I Can't Write: (pairings or characters you don't want to write, non-con, yogurt... You need to fill this out, or I might accidentally pair you up with a request you really can't fulfill.)
Are you willing to provide backup contributions? (requests for backup contributions will be made in early January. Feel free to say no.)

Example Sign Up
Name: Aubrey
Email: toofarfromgrace [at] gmail [dot] com
Wish #1: Fic - Walter/Molokov, meeting during some assignment pre-Chess. Extra points if there are shiny guns involved.
Wish #2: Fic - Freddie/Florence/Anatoly, anything with the three of them together, obviously post-Chess, probably post-Soviet Union. Preferably focused on an actual relationship as opposed to just hot threesome sex. The three of them on an airplane together going to some championship would kill me with glee.
Wish #3: Fic - Walter/Anatoly in Merano, at the embassy, in Bangkok after they had something in Merano... anything involving Walter and Antoly during canon.
I can provide: Fanfic, graphics, possibly a fanmix if someone really gets their heart set on it...
Things I Can't Write: Non-con, adult/child, hardcore smut, any character/inanimate object (I hate you people), anything too detailed on details of chess or espionage or Soviet Russia or whatever (as long as you don't mind if I fudge the details, though, it's all good).
Are you willing to provide backup contributions? Absolutely!

And that's it! Comment below if interested (or if you'd rather it not be public, feel free to e-mail me with your request.

Set right at the beginning of "US vs. USSR".
Disclaimer: I do not own Chess. If I did, the plot would actually make sense.

( Every spy, if they're good enough, knows how to identify another. )
