Eclectic might be the best way to describe Barbara Logsdon Grause. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, she traces her roots to the mixture of English, Scot-Irish, Cherokee and Shawnee people who made their way to the picturesque mountains of Appalachia and the Smokies. She now makes her home near Hazard, Kentucky.
From an early age, her interest has always been in art and visual communications, so choosing a major when she decided to attend the University of Cincinnati was easy. Barbara concentrated her efforts on the area of painting, studying with noted Cincinnnati artists Emil Quayle, Frank Herrmann, and Robert Fabe. She completed her studies in 1982, obtaining a summa cum laude BFA with a minor in Psychology.
She worked in a number of so-called day jobs, ranging from administrative assistant to layout artist to small business owner, focusing most of her attention on her family. By 1996 with her only child in high school, Barbara felt free to pursue additional education in the field of graphic design and enrolled at the Cincinnati Academy of Design (CAD). She completed the intensive two-year program, gaining additional skills in typography, illustration, design concept/layout, and capabilities in computer graphic design using Macromedia Freehand, Quark XPress, and Adobe Photoshop.
After completing her studies at CAD, she accepted a number of freelance graphic design projects before taking advantage of an opportunity to move to New Orleans. While there, she completed a number of freelance projects ranging from necktie designs for Randa/Wemco to print ads for the New Orleans Transit Authority. While living in New Orleans was a wish fulfilled, her heart called her to return to her ancestral home.
Barbara continues to accept a wide variety of freelance graphic design and illustration projects in addition to her full-time job as a graphic designer and journalist for Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP) of Hazard, Kentucky.
In her free time, Barbara enjoys surfing the web, collage and decoupage, doing pencil sketches, quilting, reading books (favorite authors include: Tom Robbins, Anne Rice, Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, Jean Shepherd, and Robert Heinlein). She is also a collector of reproduction-antique advertising tins, Tarot cards, and Japanese fabrics. In addition, Barbara has been a volunteer programmer on WMMT-FM public radio (hear it on the web at appalshop.org) where her show, The Nyt Kitchen, aired for over seven years. |
