So, our BrokeDance film festival for this week is Asian Horror. I had a bit of trouble trying to find a film to watch in this genre. It seemed every movie I was looking at was about some boogy man attacking teenagers through their cell phones, text messages, computers etc. etc. If it was a modern technological device out there, some ghost was finding a way to knock people off through it. I wasn't really interested. P and I both steered away from films that inspired crappy American remakes. Neither film was exactly horror, but both tended to lean towards the phychological thriller end of the spectrum.

First up is Arang, which was P's pick of the week. A group of friends start dying off rather violently after receiving an email directing them to a web site. hmmmm back to the whole technology killing theme. This film centers on a female police officer and her rookie partner as they try to unravel this case. This one was pretty good, though it got a bit convoluted near the end, and I was having trouble figuring out the storyteller's intent here. Was it a ghost for real, or someone using a "ghost" to accomlish their murderous agenda. Just when you think it's one....then it seems more like the other. Then when it all gets tied up as it were, they go with a supernatural "gotcha" ending, which only left me going, "huh?". So it WAS a ghost? Bit of a head scratcher, but still a good film. I give it 3.5 creepy asian girls with black hair and white faces.

Second up was my pick, Isola: Persona 13. This one was a story of multiple personalities. A young woman who happens to be phychic travels to Kobe, after the big Earthquake in Japan in 1995. Cool use of actual film footage from the earthquake btw. While helping people displaced by the earthquake, she meets a young woman....or rather keeps meeting a young woman, and each time, she's very different in attitude, behaviour and even look at each meeting. We later discover that one of the personalities has a murderous streak and lashes out to protect the girl from those that tease or abuse her. We find out that this new personality that has manifested itself is a displaces spirit in need of a body after an experiment in outer body experiences goes horribly wrong as a result of the sudden earthquake occuring in the middle of said experiment. So with the help of the surviving doctor from the experiment, the phychic tries to remove the spirit from the girl. This was a pretty interesting story. Definitely not a "been there, seen that" sort of film. Not great, but still pretty good. I rate this one 3 creepy asian girls with black hair and white faces.

Next week (ok, I'm a bit behind in writing this)this weekends (actually TOMORROW) film festival is Drama based on true events.

You are on a plane that's about to crash. You have time to make ONE phone call. Who do you call and what do you say?

A Moment Granted

Title: A Moment Granted
Pairing: Susan/Caspian
Rating: PG-13

Summary: While the Old Narnians celebrate their victory over Miraz, Caspian
and Susan allow themselves a brief reprieve from monarchical formality and
propriety.
Notes: Dug this up out of my folder just now...I wrote this after seeing the Prince Caspian movie for the second time, then promptly forgot about him. I've shamefully blended book and movieverse, but hopefully it makes sense.

Food

Plenty of folks worry about global warming, the food crisis, wars in general, etc and end with the thought, "What can I, as an individual do about this?" Here's something to ponder: Article from the Asian times. Of course, how does lack of wasting food translate to making food more available in developing countries? If people in the US are not buying so much junk food, would less demand for flour, meat and oil make this food more available for international aid relief to developing countries? I wonder if market forces would jump in - if people are not wasting so much food, meaning that there's less demand, would that drive food prices lower so farmers are selling at a loss and eventually stop producing?

I've also read that if people stopped producing meat, there would be less carbon from production of cow pies, and less deforestation to open up corn fields for animal feed. That change alone, would help reduce global warming.

Well, I've been trying to buy only local foods - cheese is difficult to cut out of my diet. I rarely eat meat. I do buy a lot of vegetables from the local market - and never get around to cooking them so there's food wasted right there. Unfortunately, even dried beans come from elsewhere so there's the energy involved in transporting them (though probably not as much as transporting slabs of meat from New Zealand, which crops up in Vientiane). Some local foods - well, as people might notice from some of my previous food entries, they're not always things that I can bear to eat.

On the other hand, with the cost of food rising and the declining value of the dollar... I may have to see what recipes I can come up with.

Bit of an energy drink fan... took me awhile but I jumped on the band wagon earlier this summer.  I was given a free Monster Energy drink, and that sealed the deal. One simple promotional giveaway created a new customer.

Monster/Green tab-good flavor, good kick, + first drink to try so it's what I compare all too
Monster/low carb/Blue tab-good flavor, good kick, gotta love no cals
Rip-it/Power-no sugar/Pink tab-ok flavor, not much of a kick, but hey it's cheap
Full Throttle/Blue Demon-awful, awful, never ever try again

MY STYLE IS CHANGING AND I HATE IT. It's all out of proportion and shit now. I believe that is what's causing me to be so unenthusiastic about what I draw. This probably started when I switched to giant paper.

Some PB references for the circus game: Dr. Macro's

Lots of people know about that site, but you can get some very authentic-to-the-period PBs.

OKAY! PEOPLE WHO HAVE APPLIED FOR THE CIRCUS GAME! You can go ahead and make your character his or her own personal journal now: [info]thespectacular

Your out of character community is [info]veryooc. Some posts have already been made.

Make sure you read the rules in the game's info so you're all clear on how it will be run. We won't play yet. Not until we have more spots filled and everything organized.

Since upping the RAM on my lappy, whenever I burn things or play DVDs, not only does the DVD skip and skip and skip, my computer's sound gets fucked up. Not mp3s! Not movie files! Just YouTube and system sounds. IT'S MAKING ME CRAZY. We moved my mom's computer out into the kitchen so I don't have any other DVD options. Unfortunately, the same day I got more RAM, I also got a new external harddrive, transferred 5930493403 files and I reinstalled the Sims.

I do love my lappy, though. It's a hardcore animal. Rawrrrrrr. It's my abuse that kills it sometimes D:

OKAY NOW I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT USA GYMNASTICS. Or the women's team, anyway.

I feel so terrible for what happened to Shayla. Breaking her leg right at the start of the trials. Honestly, her back injury made me think she'd only get to be an alternate, but breaking your leg sort of ends it before it even begins. The team, however, is basically what I figured. Jana was having consistency trouble so it was either her or Bridget I thought would make the team, and Bridget got it. The rest were lock-ins for me. Happy to see Ivana made it as an alternate, but I doubt she's happy with herself. She has not been consistent at all since Worlds and I find it kind of unfortunate. If only more had been shown of Corrie at the trials or something because I know next to nothing about her except that Tim said she was adopted from China and OH WHAT A STORY THAT WOULD BE. You know, as Tim does.

Chow's head coach, which is awesome.

REALLY EXCITED. I'm going to have a hard time deciding whether Shawn or Nastia should win gold all the time. I think Nastia deserves something for this shit year and she's so beautiful on beam and bars and even floor. And of course I'd like to see everyone medal but I have to hope Alicia will, too. Realistically, Shawn, Nastia, and Alicia could medal in individuals, and I think Shawn and Nastia could contend for All Around easily. If Chellsie keeps improving, she could also be in there. I'M EXCITED.

I'm also excited to see Jade Barbosa of Brazil. And of course Cheng Fei. And Beth Tweddle's bar routine. LOVE EM.

A life dependent on rain

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 1:24 PM

As we were returning from the village visit the other day, we passed fields and fields looking like this. The fields were wet when the farmers transplanted the rice, and then the rain stopped. Even just a few days, given the state of the soil and the depth of the water, and the ground dries out and starts to crack. Right now, the rice looks all right but another day or two...

It usually rains constantly at this time of the year - a constant heavy rain which sometimes diminishes to a drizzle but then starts down heavy again. The clouds keep the air cool and moist and the water doesn't evaporate. This year, thunderstorms provide relief from overly sunny skies and hot weather.

It's strange because it's been raining very heavily in the north. The Mekong river is very high right now, and areas of the north have been affected by the flooding, with whole fields of corn or rice washed away.

The life of the average rice farmer depends on the rain. If the skies are so unpredictable, what else can they count on in life?

KEITH OLBERMANN, SIMON PEGG, AND JESSICA STEVENSON WERE ALL ON IT!
AND NOW NOW NOW SIMON AND KEITH AND JESSICA ARE ALL TOGETHER WITH JOEL!
AAAAAHHHHHHH. I want to SO be in the middle of that!

P.S. Russ came home tonight since everyone else was going home too. Hoppy me! Of course, he instantly fell asleep, but that's fine, he's a tired boy. I'm just glad I don't have to sleep in the bed alone.

I think almost all of my mood theme photos are from Poopie!

Still Awake

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 1:07 AM
I should be sleeping, yet I'm still awake.  Not much is on tv right now.  There's never anything on tv.  It's all reality tv, reruns, or garbage.  I hate network reality tv.  American Idol, Big Brother, and its clones are all  unappealing to me.  They seem like a cheap, quick fix to fill a time spot.   I do sometimes watch Bravo's Project Runway and Top Chef.  The production values seem to be better, plus in theory there's a career goal. They actually use a honed talent to try to move ahead in their chosen field.
I also watch the FoodNetwork, A&E, TLC, and the SciFi Channel.

Daddy's Little Girl

  • Jul. 26th, 2008 at 11:12 PM
My father is a quiet man who tries to please the people he's afraid will leave him. I've discovered that recently. He's afraid, really afraid and I don't think he would never admit it. "My family doesn't care about me but I have you guys," he told me. We're all this man has to fall back on and I don't know who realizes it.

He finds it hard to open up to people. When he does, it's the best feeling in the world. One can actually feel accomplished by this. He is a many of many words but more actions.

My father is a gentle man. If he could, he would gladly give you the shirt off his back. He will walk miles and miles just to be with you. Because he wants to please you and because he loves you.

His love is subtle and comes in small doses. As a young girl, I could tell how much my father loved us. He never hit us and he never liked to yell. As I get older I see that my father isn't the man I thought he was but he's a better man. I never underestimated him as a person, but his intelligence, I will admit. He's a smart man who doesn't choose his words wisely but he's able to recognize it. He's able to say sorry.

I get told that I am the perfect mix of both of my parents. When my father's annoyed, he tells me I'm just like my mother. When my mother's angry, she tells me I'm just like my father. When my mother says that, my father smiles and I know he hopes it's true.

I can say I am like my father in more ways than anyone has realized. And I am proud to say so.

Anonymously.

It's a matter of pinion...

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 3:27 PM

There's a hail storm. Complete with lightning and everything. This is some weather we're having - Normally Australian winters are mild with occasional cold nightsand mornings, but I'm seriously beginning to believe that there's something very wrong happening here. There might be something in this ozone, global warming (and, incidentally, cooling) business. It's a bit of a worry, actually.

So, Sunday. Tomorrow is Monday and there beginneth my fortnight of no work. Can't tell you how pleased I am about it *squee*. Also have me a fair amount of the good green to have and to hold. And smoke. And share with Era soon, I believe.

I've gotten a decent amount of fics written and now that I've got a system - of sorts - in place, I can see what's being done and what needs doing. I've go two quite large fanfiction projects to do (one almost complete and the other in chunks). There are pages and pages of notes pinned to my wall on all manner of things - timelines (very useful for Weasleycest), birthdates, key plotlines and words, character workand basic ideas. It's going well; though it makes me imagine, everytime I see this wall, what my own house will look like...Much like that, but on a far larger scale.

Guh. It's fucking freeeeezing. And rainy.

Went to Miami's 21st last night. I didn't get drunk. I smoked with some girl called...Jan. We talked. It got cold. I drank champagne and bitched about party guests with Im. It was an alright night (not all that notable), but it was good to see Miami and Nemo again (still together, as I had thought). I was secretly very glad to get home to bed, though. Who knows, maybe I'm getting old.

Have to roll lmore joints tonight. It's more or less so I don't have to keep doing it, lol, just get them all done and I don't have to deal with it later.

Speaking of joints, lol, the other night I wrote a new Housefic featuring Chase, House and pot. I've always wanted to write a pot!fic and my first attempts involved Cuddy and didn't work out right, so I abandoned all hope, but, after my own joints (heh), inspiration struck. Actually, I quite like this one. I hope the critics are gentle. You can find it, if you wish to read it, beneath the cut. It's probably one of my more lengthy pieces at 1,306 words and there's a buttload of dialogue, which I think worked out alright.

His mother had called him silly for doing this... But he didn't feel silly. It was actually refreshing. If everyone wore bags on their heads, then he wouldn't have to worry about being laughed at anymore. They wouldn't be able to see the flaws on his face... Instead, they would have to start thinking about what was inside him. There was nothing silly about just wanting to be liked, and liked for who you were, at that!

What he hadn't counted on was the fact that he would be the only one with a bag on his head... and therefore subjected to that ridicule...

Family

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 12:18 AM
It's after 12:00 midnight and we just got back from Bill's family's house. We got up there about 5:00pm. I'm really tired, but we had a great time. I really love his sister, Jeannette. We have way too much in common and we think just about alike. We spent the first part of it playing yahtzee and naming each others behinds. Yes, names like Big Red, which was Ricky's daughter Rachel. And Cottage Cheese was Steve's wife Amy. Jeannette was Ripley, believe it or not! Jeannette's son David was The Godfather. And Gary was Scarface cause he's had surgery on his. We had way too much fun with it. I won Yahtzee by the way. I got 2 Yahtzee's and my end score was 399. I rock! Then after we ate, we went to The Ole Mug, which is a coffee shop off of 65, to watch Jeannette's son Kegan sing. He was REALLY good. I thought so anyway. And the girl that was singing with him had a great voice too. Her name was Veronica. I wish there was a way I could get some of their music, but I don't think they have a CD or anything. I'm going to have to figure out a way to find them. Anyway, after that we just went back to their house and spent the rest of the time talking. They are the family I wish I would have had growing up. I love them. And they just take me in like I belong there. Can't screw that up!

Ok, I'm going to bed now. We are going to church with them in the morning and then probably to Debbie's house in the afternoon if she feels up to it. Although her mom is down and I don't want to feel like I am just barging in on them. She'll let me know if she doesn't want me to come over. Ok I'm babbling now. Good night

Prompt 317: Love At First Sight

  • Jul. 27th, 2008 at 12:30 AM
it's been pointed out by [info]rotc_banana2531 that things between Nicole and Danielle have gotten... depressing lately. Anyway, depressing isn't fun (duh?)... so let's try some fluff, hmm?

--

for [info]all_unwritten

--

Nikki wasn't going to call the first time she saw Dani "love at first sight." It wasn't even lust at first sight, honestly. More like, "o, she's kind of cute." It took many long conversations about mundane happenings and short sentences about important life issues before Nikki even thought the word love. But, as the two of them sat on the kitchen floor, smears of caramel and chocolate sryup on their faces, sprinkles in their hair, and ice cream melting on the counter, Nikki's smile was only partially from the antics that had occurred moments before...
