I have a beautiful sofa that was my great grandmother's. I love it (LOVE it), but it has down cushions and my partner is allergic to them. I would like to take the feathers out of the inner cushions and refill them with some sort of down alternative. Do any of you crafty quilting and upholstery experts have any tips as to what sort of product I should look for?

often times when i visit anthropologie i take pictures of the things i like.

portland is full of beautiful old homes, and some of the landscaping is really spectacular. this house is a few blocks from where i live and i've passed it dozens of times, but today everything was in bloom and it looked really lovely. just felt like sharing.

My boyfriend & I are moving into our first place together, and we're very excited. The one thing I'm not excited about are the new carpets that were just installed in the rooms we will be using as our bedroom, an office, and a music room. The living room has lovely plank wood floors and the kitchen has linoleum. The hallway on the way to the bathroom and the bathroom itself have a different linoleum, but luckily for us they are in bad shape, so the landlord is allowing us to replace it with what we want (black & white checkerboard tile) and he'll reimburse us monetarily. We also have a long sun room/hallway that is carpeted, but it's with a different carpet- a commercial carpet that I don't even think is new.

Since we are renting and don't want to put too much of our time and money into a place we don't own, what would be some ways to make this carpet situation bearable? The carpets in the 3 rooms are all neutral beige (yuck!) and the carpet in the sun room is a dark blue. Keep in mind, ripping up the carpet isn't an option since it was newly installed. Thanks!

dumpstered dresser, garment rack, shelf, lamp, and medicine cabinet. this should be an olympic sport.

Garment rack and suitcases serve as a closet. Circus car toybox holds all my shoes. Old textiles, Victorian bodice, 1930's velvet fur trimmed cape, 3 hats on wall.

Carl and Karin Larsson was both Swedish painters and interior designers.

Carl and Karin Larsson had eight children and his family became Larsson's favourite models. Many of his watercolours are now popular all over the world. In 1888 the young family was given a small house, named Little Hyttnäs, in Sundborn by Karin's father Adolf Bergöö. Carl and Karin decorated and furnished this house according to their particular artistic taste and also for the needs of the growing family. Through Larsson's paintings and books this house has become one of the most famous artist's homes in the world. The descendants of Carl and Karin Larsson now own this house and keep it open for tourists each summer from May until October.

renovating my mom's guestroom since a couple of months.

new walls, new floor.... but this is about the lamp and the bed.
it was tricky to find a lamp that would suit the room and our tastes.
the ceilings are no very high. after months of searching and debating we finally found this and picked it right away. after some altering we are really happy with it.

*xenos is a dutch shop
but we also have one here in Germany,
near to the dutch border.

Hello! First time posting here :)

I love those little houses plenty of little beautiful handmade details that I try to catch with my camera when I go out for a walk. I wish I had better pictures, but I usually take them in spy-mode cause I'm very shy. Most of them are beach houses, and I swear they're more beautiful than in my poor pics.

The blue house had this plant full of eggs. Really weird.

I fell in love with this house... the owners were at home and I didn't they to see me, taht's why the picture isn't very good; but, believe me, there was a wonderful collection of random things incrusted on the walls

Those two pics are from a very special village: during two weeks, they give accommodation/place to work to a group of artists, and in return, the artists donate their works to the village. So you can see sculptures and paintings in the middle of the street or above the houses:

So, inspired by the last post, I will show a few before and after photos of our cheap old house.

This house we will be selling, so the walls can't be painted as garishly as I would like, and I haven't got any of our furnishings moved upstairs yet. We compensated this loss of color choice to my daughter with very garish curtains. I think fabric can cure a great many problems. Her curtains are pink and gold taffeta (the gold is the inner sheer curtain.) I purchased it for $1.50 a yard at Joann.

The pictures are out of order, with most of the after shots coming first. I also included a picture of a treadle sewing machine we acquired and an old sectional set we plan on reupholstering.

I will try this again....Okay.
The house was built in 1890. The entire house was/ is covered in 3 or more layers of the fugliest wallpaper ever. The kitchen has industrial carpeting in it. The upstairs has been replastered and stuccoed. We will be installing maple floors throughout the upstairs and the parts of the downstairs without hardwood floors in the Spring. My husband contacted a local mill down the road from us, where we will be purchasing unfinished 6 x 1 maple boards for 60 cents a square foot. It won't be ready until Spring though, so for now we have painted the pine floor.
At 60 cents a foot, it's cheaper than tile, so we will be putting it into the kitchen and mudroom as well.

This house was purchased for 51,500 in December of 06 in Upstate NY. Besides the obvious need of a remodel, the roof was shot and the chimney needed repairing. Although it looked like the roof leaked badly, it was just condensation on the second story from the previous owner's closing it off to conserve heat. The walls did leak by the chimney, though, especially on the first floor. They are dry now, and will be getting replastered this Spring.

THE ROOM.

It's a very narrow and small room with a pitched roof area.

It used to be my bedroom when I still lived with my mother. Now she wants to turn it into a guestroom/office/ironing room... whatever.

i think the only way to improve it would be to make it bright and cosy.

my mom suggested to make it seem somehow 'mediterran'.

but she lives in a small town with a lot of rain and grey skies and everybody wants mediterran rooms.

but mostly they end up in painting their walls pastel orange and calling it 'terracotta' and installing a pine look laminate floor. all stuff that my mom and i can't stand.

So what I did was

I ripped down all the wall paper and rounded all corners in there with mortar as good as i could.
I didn't want any sharp edges in there.

....and then we're trying to get the right lighting in there. we can't take anything because the ceiling isn't quite high....

....i bought a light green sari on ebay. i wanna sew a large pillow (as broad as the bed, in order to use it as a sofa, too) and a bedspread from it.

instead of having a sofa
i used to have this for a while.

it's a cabinet minus the doors and shelfs.
but still with a LARGE drawer where i used to keep all of my audio tapes and mini discs :)
it's very cosy to sit inside and chat, read, phone.....

i inheritted this from a friend a while ago. but now this is going on ebay because i wanna move to a smaller place in the medium-term...
