Jul. 7th, 2009 @ 11:51 pm Alfandria going strong!
Ok, the MUCK is up again as you all probably know, and people are flocking back to it. I've been amazed by what I've seen so far! So many people coming back and so many people reconnecting with old friends! It's like a big family reunion on the MUCK right now :)

Well, I've got more good news too!
I have now have control of the alfandria.net domain!!! This is the original Alfandria address that is still all over the net. All those dead links will soon be lit up again.
I am pointing it to the MUCK and probably in the next few days, you should be able to log in using
Host: alfandria.net
And port 8888

Thanks to everyone who made this possible, from those who worked on Pax Draconis back in 2002 and 2003 and those who have come back home to Alfandria ^^

Jul. 6th, 2009 @ 06:32 pm Alfandria is go!
Ok kids, here's what you need to do.

IP: 174.101.150.78
Port: 8888

If you had a character on here in the past, try logging in. If you can't get in, log in as a guest and page me. There are 9 guest accounts, if you get a message stating that there are not more available guest accounts, wait 5-10 minutes and try again. I doubt there will be that big of a rush, but you never know.

If you do not have a character, log in as a guest and page me and I'll create one for you so you can get started.

Let me know if you see any MUF crashes or anything odd. Also let me know if you find anything that still refers to the place as "Pax Draconis" and I can come by and get that fixed up.

If I'm off line (later tonight) then you will have wait until I get back. Until I get a full wiz-staff in you may need to be patient :)

Please don't request characters here. Do it from the muck... Thanks!

Some important info:
Muck clients: Suggest Wyrmnet (simple) or Beipmu (Bells and Whistles) for Windows. Savitar is good on the Mac. Linux, dunno what is available for you guys client wise, but I have gotten BeipMU running easily under Linux using WINE in the past.

Once logged in - SOme important commands:
@species me=your species goes here
@gender me=your gender
editplayer (lets you set your player settings and description, alternative to all of the above)
@mate me=your mate (optional :P)
mwho - Can list your mate or if you are looking.
@doing me=your doing message on WHO
WHO - lists who is online
wwi - lists who is online and where they are unless set private
i - Inventory
Look - Look at things and players. Make sure to read look #help, it explains how to create fake objects on your person or rooms that show up in room or inventory lists but don't cost BQU's to create. Very useful feature!
wish - In the clearing you can wish in the well.
" or /me - Chat!
: - Pose!

Any command and #help should give you some help on it.

Few terms:
Building Quote Units: You get 1000 of these to start out. Use them up and you have to ask a wiz for more and will get them only if in dire need. Each room costs 10, each exit 1. Each object you make 10 as well. Should be plenty though.

Sapphires - The money of the MUCK. Can throw them in the well or collect them. Eventually vending programs will be installed, if I can find any suitable ones. You start with zero, but you will find them as you explore. Unlike the original alfandria, exploring is a bit more rewarding here. While you usually find 1 or 5 at a time, you may get lucky and find 10, 25 or even 50 if you are having a really good day.

Anyway, that should be enough to get you going if you are new or need a refresher.

Jul. 5th, 2009 @ 05:04 pm It's up!
Something you probably thought you would never see again:

I have it up and running. I won't be about tonight, but tomorrow I am going to try publishing the IP and port and will be around to create user accounts.

Got it running on the following hardware:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4 ghz
4 GB ram
2.5 TB disk
Dual gigabit LAN linkup
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Intel)

This is my personal machine, but even if I'm doing stuff, I doubt it will slow down the MUCK because this is a very powerful computer. Eventually we will have to get dedicated hardware for it.

Eredien and Rax? Do you have an answer yet? I don't think it will take much to run the MUCK. Just give it 150 MB to grow and it will take very little CPU.

Jul. 4th, 2009 @ 09:24 pm The AlfandriaMUCK Wizstaff
I think the last poll has been out there for long enough.

The votes were in, and a bit of interest was expressed in the MUCK if it was back online. I am not sure if the MUCK will be a reality or not? What is the status with [info]arcturax  and [info]eredien 's plans on bringing it back?
I hope this might be of help. There was a question raised before by Arturax on who the Wizstaff might be.

When the MUCK was up, I remember there was a difference in opinion on the Wizstaff and the state of the MUCK in general. I don't know when the opinions changed or when it really started going downhill. I hope this doesn't continue if the MUCK is ever brought back up. How about I ask everyone for nominations on Wizstaff and Adminstrative Staff?

The old wizstaff was: Aetobatus, Bahamut, Darial, Sigridir, Steve, and Wyrm.

The situation may arise if it is recreated that none of the old Wizstaff would want to be on the Wizstaff of a new AlfandriaMUCK.

I would like to ask, if everyone could comment on this post and voice your opinion for several potential MUCK positions.

Who in the Community would you trust to be a:
Server Administrator, Head Wizard, Regular Wizzes?

Helpstaff is not included as it would likely be the decision of whoever the Head Wiz is. If anyone has an suggestions that have not already been expressed on how to host and broadcast the MUCK, including websites, please include your opinions here as well.

My own nomition is [info]eredien  for Server Admin, and [info]arcturax  as a member of the regular Wizstaff.
Please, If everyone would contribute a nomition, even themselves (except me of myself as that wouldn't be fair I think), then we will be able to have a vote on whom the community wants of those nominated to be the actual Administrators and Wizstaff. This is important at least to decide the Head Wizard or System Administrator. If we can't all decide on who should be the remainder of the administrative staff, then it could likely be left up to the Head Wiz or Administrator to contribute a final decision.

The old wizstaff can be nomiated, of course. Maybe we can convince some of them to rejoin the effort.
I will let the previous poll run for the remainder of the week and then close it.

Please comment to this post with some nomiations for Wizstaff. In the meantime, another quiz. This is more for fun. An old AlfandriaMUCK Wizstaff popularity poll. Who of the old AlfandriaMUCK Wizstaff did you like the most?

Jun. 23rd, 2009 @ 07:10 am Community Outlet Internet Sites
I posted a previous poll but I'm still curious considering a previous post I found on here so I am starting another poll. I want to know what everyone wants please (yes I will explain why). I will explain the last poll choice as well.

A Content Management System (CMS) is a big extensible portal, such that what Furaffinity and Deviantart are but closer to what Eka's Portal is (http://aryion.com/).

The example I am using for the last choice in this poll is Xoops (http://www.xoops.org/), which has extensible modules such as http://www.xoops.org/modules/repository/.

The particular extensions that can be added to Xoops are as little or as much as anyone wants. For example, you can have Chat Rooms, Forums, Picture/Art Posting and other modules or you can just have a forum extension added.

Here is what I will 'donate'. I already have a domain myself with a Xoops system on it.  I will, however, donate the preliminary funds to the community to start a new domain for a community hub of dragons, stemming from Alfandria or alt.fan.dragons.

I guess the main thing I asking along with this poll is that: Does the community want to be more centralized, with an official official web hub, chat room, and what not? Would there be interest to make a new website versus trying to update the current old ones?

I know there already is a website for the Newsgroup such as www.altfandragons.org but that it is unchanged: http://www.wyrm.org.uk/afd/ . There is also http://l.webring.com/hub?ring=afdring and http://altfandragons.yuku.com/ and especially http://www.dragonweyr.com/afd.htm so it may be a moot point. I figured I would put this out to those in the community. I just don't want to put my money into it if no one is going to have any interest in it so please. What does everyone think?

Here is the poll:

Jun. 6th, 2009 @ 08:23 pm Alfandria MUCK - Rebooted
Is there still interest in bringing the MUCK back or has everyone pretty much given up hope or is there not enough interest in rebuilding the muck now?

Aeto was talking to Eredien and that's the last I heard of it. If the data was unrecoverable or he is still working on it a year later, maybe it might be best to just re-create as much of the muck as possible? Just start with the clearing and branch out from there.

I might have the files to restore the areas of space and the moonbase. I don't think I have my haunted house or roller coaster though.

I have the remnants of the "Pax draconis" muck that I had started for a while. It has many of the base programs Alfandria had and is easily renamed and the clearing re @desced. This leaves you with at least 80% of the restart work done. If Wyrm can be found, he can probably bring back all the nifty stuff he had written for Alfandria.

Eredien, if you and your fiancee are still interested, I can get the files for you and you can make a start with that. I probably remember enough MUF to help with any coding or finishing any half done programs. I trust Rax knows UNIX well enough to set up fuzzball muck server?

I have a fuzzball and a protomuck based version. But I would suggest you stick with fuzzball muck. Protomuck was full of fail and aids :)

Apr. 14th, 2008 @ 09:50 pm If all goes well...
I'm holding a drive in my hands now which, if all goes (or has gone) well, contains a copy of the Alfandria database. I'm hoping to try to dig a copy off it sometime this week, so we can see if someone wants to do something to get it running again.

I'm about 75% sure it's on there, but I can't make any promises yet. I'll be spending tomorrow looking for the files.

(Just got a mail message about it the other day, so thought I'd drop a note here about it. :> )

EDIT:

Some of you are likely wondering what actually happened... Here's the history.

A few years ago, back when it was running on tiger, I suffered the Disk Crash From Hell. Basically, I'd just moved away from the bay area, with all my colo servers still there. The Alf and related machines were on a big, 14-drive RAID array. Well, one of the two power supplies went belly-up, causing half the drives to spin down.

Any *reasonable* RAID controller would have paniced and shut down. The Adaptec HW raid controller I had instead decided to corrupt the rest of the drives, beyond repair. All wasn't lost, however, as just days before I had copied the entire muck's config files to a machine which was being built out as a replacement anyway. That was Jaguar, and it was able to go online relatively quickly because of that.

Last year, sometime late in the year, jaguar fell off the network for unknown reasons. I spent around a month working with the colo folks, but we finally decided the motherboard was dead, and I had the drives FedExed to me sometime around the end of last year. I copied all the user directories off of them, and put them to other uses. I admit, I kind of forgot about the Alfandria stuff...

The config files SHOULD be on the drive I copied all the user directory contents onto, though. I've got that drive installed in a machine now, and hope to be able to access them in the next day or two.

I'll make the same offer I did before. I really don't have the time to manage the system anymore, but do have the resources, so if someone wants to take over management on my systems, I'm happy to make that possible. As you've certainly noticed if you've looked for the server, the "chameleon.net" systems are still there...

So, wish me luck. :>
