Full track list with songwriting credits:
In addition to Alec's vocals, fiddle, guitar, and percussion, Andrew Hare provided bass & Heather is credited with vocals. I've detailed the ones I recognized myself in the song notes below.
My thoughts:
There were a few years where I felt Heather had turned away from her art. Not her performance, but her songwriting. Insh'Allah, Festival Wind, Album of Secrets, Merlin's Descendants, Arms of the Sea - all were good music, most involved original songs, and (Insh'Allah in particular) stretched her songwriting muscles to include new music styles and worlds. And I certainly don't expect artists to bare all; there are things which a person simply doesn't want to share with the world. But compared to her songs on Enchanted, Midsummer, Wanderlust, or Life's Flame, most of those recent albums were missing something. Everafter was a big change, and I think a good change. Heather dropped her guard.
Balance of Nature is Alec stepping into the light of day - appropriate for his first solo album. Overtly, none of the songs are about the transition. Subtext? Yup, enough that my initial thought was that the album was all about transformation. But there's also laughter, heart, sorrow, passion, and love. And it doesn't hurt that his voice is clear and resonant.
Song notes: ( and it's long )
*I hesitate to refer to Creature and Blood & Passion as "covers", tho perhaps, technically speaking, they could be considered as such.
