Newsweek
On the one hand, it's not about Alec or Heather per se, or about the music. And I note that while Alec is quite frank in one-on-one conversation, on stage he sticks to the faerie tale.

On the other hand, it's a topic we've touched on multiple times. So...

Newsweek has a story on Rethinking Gender: What Makes Us Male or Female?. Most of those profiled are MTF, but there are a few FTMs represented.

Hopefully this sort of national mainstream media coverage will have a positive impact on the US overall. While this is not too out-of-the-ordinary for Seattle, I think we all know there are communities that are not at all accepting. I know Alec was very relieved that he got such a positive reception at Norwes - and I hope that he continues to get such a positive reception ...

(Which is part of the reason for the faerie tale, I would think - there are going to be some who want to assume Alec is one of Heather's brothers, and she's off training horses or raising dogs or having babies somewhere.)

We (transfolk, that is) are slowly creeping into notice. Protections are being given, acceptances reached. But it's been a long, hard fight, and I don't expect that it's even close to over.

I'm very happy to see a major media source picking this up and running it in a positive light. I was rather surprised at first, but then just incredibly pleased. Until very recently, transfolk were only really represented in the media by shock-jocks and Jerry Springer-style shows.

I'm happy for Alec to have had the internal strength to do what he needs to do to be happy. At the end of the day, that's all any of us should do. For many people in my position, it's simply a matter of 'transition or die'. And in many cases, this is more than hyperbole.

I'm very proud of the fans within this community who have accepted this change. Whether they want/need the story, or the truth, I am incredibly proud to call myself an Alexander fan.

Indeed. :)

As the community owner, I'm relieved ;)

It's a good feeling, isn't it?

Whether they want/need the story, or the truth

See, this is sort of what I was trying to get at in a prior comment about technology and magic -- the story IS the truth, in a very tangible sense. You can describe it in two different vocabularies, but in both cases what you have is the physical manifestation of a wish. Which is really, really cool. :)

I'm not personally trans, but I've known a few transpeople here and there for years, and honestly it has never seemed like a big deal -- people should have every right to self-create as they live their lives in keeping with their inner vision of who they are.

Very well said. Precisely.

a hat tip to you all. This has been my greatest fear for Haether and Alex. I came out, and lost everything. I had to re-create myself from the ashes, literally. And discovered inner strength because of it, but lost my own "Fairylands"in reality. Now I am solid again, and can look back at it all, and while I wish I hadn't wasted so many years "deciding", I do not regret anything else. I am 100% behind Alex.

We all come to our decisions in our time. For me it was 28 years, thrown back and forth between masculine and feminine. It took questioning everything, throwing it all down and walking away, to get where I am now.

I'm not whole, not yet, but now I know the ways in which I am broken.

Many great things were built on ashes. Sounds like you and I are some of them.

"now I know the ways in which I am broken."

(Offers superglue...)

(AT least- if you know where you're broken- you can start figuring out how to put the pieces back, right?)

And more importantly, I can figure out which parts don't need to be glued back on.
