Vacation In Albuquerque

Hey, people, I made a post a while ago about wanting to move to ABQ, but for now I will have to settle for visiting.

Specifically, I'm visiting from July 27th to August 5th. I will be seeing a concert at the Sunshine Theater, but don't really know what else to do there besides just checking the area out. I'll be staying near the concert venue. I plan to go to Santa Fe and Roswell (because I'm a bit of an alien fanatic) and maybe Las Cruces if there's anything down there.

Anything cool happening during this time? I'm really down for anything, so any suggestions are welcome.
Should I know any hot spots/night life areas? Art exhibits, museums, etc? I want to pack as much as possible in the 9 days I'll be enjoying your beautiful city/state!

Any place to get info on where I can hike, etc.? Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks,
D.

Smith and Carlisle Verizon Coverage

Hi all,
Anyone get really crappy cell phone coverage from Verizon in the Smith/Carlisle area or near the airforce base?
I've been having issues for months, that I'm just now trying to get resolved. I've called Verizon repeatedly and the first thing they reccomended was replacing the phone, which I did, and it's still bad. I called them yet again and now they're actually going to send a service technician out to the area. Anyway, just wondering whether anyone else has experiences similiar problems. Honestly I'm trying to get out of the my contract, without having to pay the fee.

Body Modifications

Ok so this is not exactly and Albuquerque specific question, but I wasn't sure where else I could ask this question to such a diverse group of people.

I've noticed more and more people using various body modification techniques lately. I especially notice a lot of younger guys using those earring type things that stretch out the earlobe. (I'm not sure what they're called) This makes me wonder what will happen in the future to these individuals if they either enter a job that is more conservative or just don't want them anymore? With tatoos or other piercings, people are able to either cover them up (depending where they are, and often that is part of the consideration) or remove them for the time being. In the even longer term removal, there is tatoo removal and you can let other piercings heal up. What are you able to do with stretched out earlobes?
I'm assuming that surgery would be an option, but it makes me wonder if you would forever be left with "strange" looking ears.

Anyway, sorry for such a strange question, but I'm curious what others know about this subject.

Discount card????????????

I went through the drive through of Tacos Tijuana one night and I noticed a purple sticker on the drive through window. The sticker had "Discount card accepted here" printed on it. When I asked the clerk about it, she was confused and said that they didn't accept any discount cards. According to her, the sticker wasn't even placed there by them.

This restaurant had previously been a Lobo Chicken, so it's possible that restaurant may have accepted this card. Does anyone have any idea as to where I could get this discount card, and what restaurants accept it? Thanks.

ABQ Legends: Jimmy Santiago Baca & Don Schrader

Tonight we wept and laughed with poet Jimmy Santiago Baca at the UNM SUB. His lecture on how Latin American poets had influenced his writing was standing room only and very well received. I think because I have such an intimate connection with the land he writes about, Baca can move me in a way no other poet can. When I was courting my wife I read to her from his first book, and she fell in love with me, Baca and New Mexico, not necessarily in that order. As we left the auditorium we met and shook hands with another ABQ legend, Don Schrader.

Don, of course, attended the lecture in his trademark jean shorts and little else. You have to be a legend to get away with that. I had taken the photo of him above at the ABQ Pride parade. When we got home Karla wanted to know more about Don; after reading that he drinks one to five cups of his urine each day, we promptly washed our hands...

Rumi Returning - Film at The Guild

JULY 15 - 17 (TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY): 4:30, 6:15, 8:00
RUMI RETURNING
Dir. Kell Kearns - 55m - 2008
In the fall of 2007, in a remote city in central Turkey, thousands of interfaith pilgrims from around the world converged for a birthday celebration at the sarcophagus of a 13th century Islamic teacher and Sufi poet: Mevlana Jalalludin Rumi, known to the West simply as Rumi, is celebrating his 800th birthday. The reason The Washington Post could exult on August 30, 2007 that "Rumi is hot" is beautifully explained in this new documentary film by Kell Kearns and Cynthia Lukas. Filmed at the locations of Rumi's life and amidst the grandeur of Turkey's great mosques, Byzantine churches and Greco-Roman ruins, RUMI RETURNING is more than a visual feast of the music and dance of the mysterious Whirling Dervishes that Rumi inspired. It movingly tells the story of a Muslim child who fled his birthplace in Afghanistan as a refugee of war during what is now called The Golden Age of Sufism to become one of the planet's great voices for universal love and tolerance of all paths to God.

Director/producer Kell Kearns and writer/producer Cynthia Lukas will appear in person at the Thursday, July 17 screenings for Q&A.

THE GUILD CINEMA
3405 Central Ave. NE
Albuquerque, NM 87106
tel.
We were driving down Montgomery today when my boyfriend confessed that he misses playing table-top RPG's with his friends from back home--we just moved here from the east about a month ago.

So I come to you, livejournal of Albuquerque, to ask if anyone out here is into this RPG thing and either has a game going and are looking for another player or would like to get in touch with him about starting one? I don't know much about it, personally, but I think he's open to anything as long as it fits into his rather unconventional work schedule. Also, he's 21 and doesn't want to seem like a "creepy old guy" in any group that he happens to find, if that matters.

Hit me up if you're a gamer! Where the locals hang out, stuff like that? I've done some research on places to eat and some bars but local opinions are the best when it comes to these things. My husband is into really good beer and I like a good place to dance. Music wise I am into anything new wave, 80's, goth, downtempo, house and industrial. Restaurants, we are pretty adventurous anything from thai to american we'll eat! Thanks sooo much :)

So, I go out from time to time but seem to frequent the same bars that bore me. I'm looking for something where drink specials are abundant and varied, the atmosphere is laid back and has 20-30 somethings as the main customers. Eclectic is enjoyable for me, and somewhere that there aren't just stuck up yuppies is also the key. More... hippie-ish perhaps?

So any suggestions?

Apartments

Hi everyone, I am moving to Albuquerque from out of state in the beginning of August. I have only been to Alb. one time but got a general idea of the different areas. I am trying to make arrangements to get a place prior to actually moving so we'll have a place to move right into when we get there. So it is tough because we won't actually get to see the place when we choose it. I'm looking for a two bedroom home or apartment to rent.

I have found some options in areas close enough to where we need to be and was wondering if any of you could tell me what you think of these places. Are they good, do they have a good or bad reputation? Is the neighborhood ok? Have a bug problem? Just anything you can possibly tell me about any of these, I would greatly appriciate.

Mountain Run on Eubank Boulevard, NE

The Silverado on Osuna Road, NE by San Mateo

La Mirage on Academy Road

The Villas at La Privada on San Mateo, NE

Oak Tree Park on Osuna/San Mateo

The Aspens on Eagle Ranch Road, NW

The River Walk/ La Paz on Calle Cuervo, NW
(was this where there was a murder+suicide on Ellison back in May? I remember while I was visiting that incident was on the news and occured at an apt complex by Ellison, but maybe it was a different complex, I don't know).

Also any thoughts on San Miguel Del Bosque on Coors, NW.? This place seems to offer more sq. footage at a little cheaper place.

Or are there any places you might recommend?

Sorry if this is annoying, I don't mean to be. I know I mentioned a lot of places... I don't know any locals and would really appriciate anything you can tell me.

Thank you so much!! :)

Edit: Thank you so much everyone, your input has helped me greatly!!!! I think we have it narrowed down!! Thanks so much :)

Hey all,

Anyone having trouble with Comcast Cable internet? Mine has been spotty for about 10 days now, but yesterday it was down for about 10 hours, and its been down for the last 4 or so today. I've actually spent significantly more time using my previously- inactive 5yr old computer on dial-up this week :(
Ive tried everything I can think of on my end, I've even switched modems. At this point, I'm tempted to call them and tell them where to shove their overpriced internet. I hate paying for something I can't use when I need it.

My question is- What are the best alternatives? I don't care too much about price, as long as the connection is RELIABLE.

Sorry I'm in the dark here, I was on dial-up until about 9 months ago :D I just went with what came with my new computer. Thanks!

Dead birds?

Anyone else in the south valley finding more dead birds than usual?

Today I rescued a bird from my dog and cat. They gave chase and it tangled itself in the fence. I had no problems catching it as it held very still. I watched after it and checked it's body for damage... it was fine, no cuts or blood or missing feathers (i beat the dogs and cat to it). But it continued to go into death throes and eventually became still. I buried it.

Then dad tells me he's found some dead birds around as well (no wonder the trash smelled of death, why didn't he bury them?!).

Is someone poisoning our birds? O.o It can't be the heat, we've had worse without all the dead bodies. The recent, if very short lived, hailstorm, maybe?

EDIT: btw, they've been sparrows. Our yard seems to mostly attract lots of sparrows and lots of doves.
