Nov. 26th, 2007 @ 07:25 pm Lesbian Connection magazine!
From: ElsiePub@aol.com

Hello from Margy at Lesbian Connection magazine!  I’m trying to get the word out to lesbians everywhere about our FREE magazine.  In case you haven’t heard of LC before, or if you just lost touch with us, here’s some info:

Lesbian Connection is the free worldwide forum of news, ideas, and information for, by, and about lesbians.  We’ve been publishing since 1974, and we mail issues out every other month in plain brown envelopes (the word “lesbian” doesn’t appear anywhere on the outside).

This magazine is a grassroots forum, which means it’s truly written by our readers.  On its pages you’ll find info for lesbians on places to live and where to travel, lesbian B&Bs and guesthouses, websites, cruises, festivals, conferences, lesbian land and retirement communities, products (books, CDs, DVDs, etc.), campgrounds and retreats, lesbian lawyers and realtors, as well as the comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” and much more.  There are also reviews, articles, and letters dealing with whatever issues LC’s readers are talking about, from “The L Word” to health issues, relationships, and politics.

So, if you’re a lesbian and you’d like to start receiving LC, all you need to do is email us (elsiepub@aol.com) your full name and complete (snail mail) mailing address and we’ll be happy to add you to our list.  (By the way, our mailing list is totally confidential; we never sell, loan or share it with anyone else.)  We’d also like to know where you heard about us.  In case you’re wondering LC survives on the donations we receive from our readers.  However, contributions are voluntary and subscriptions really are free to all lesbians.  Our goal is, quite simply, to connect the lesbian community worldwide.  (F.Y.I. our official name and address is Elsie Publishing Institute (EPI), PO Box 811, East Lansing, MI 48826, ph 517-371-5257, fax 517-371-5200.  EPI is a tax-deductible 501(c)3 nonprofit charity.)

We hope to hear from you soon, and feel free to forward this email on to your lesbian friends and list-serves!

For Lesbian Connection,
Margy

P.S. If you email us by the end of the month we should be able to get you into our next mailing.

Jul. 16th, 2007 @ 07:59 pm Said Sans Title
Hello hello. I am moving to Albuquerque from Montreal, Canada to study studio arts at UNM for a year.

I am currently in my 'freakout phase', as I am moving in less than a month and still don't know anyone. I have never been to Albuquerque (closest I've been is L.A. and San Diego).

So, maybe if I could talk to some people here, I'd calm down a little.

I have a few random questions about different topics and I would be very grateful if some of you took the time to respond sincerly. Imagine being in my situation!

1. HOUSING. I still don't know where I am going to live. Could you tell me more about the neighborhoods within walking distance from UNM? Which are the safest? The ones most convenient for students? The most trendy without being overpriced? The most affordable? Do you know of any buildings renting clean lofts or studios at reasonable prices? What should I pay attention to when visiting an apartment? How do I know a landlord is trying to screw me?

2. FOOD. Very important. How 'vegetarian-friendly' is Albquerque? Are there great health food stores? Local farmers' markets? Good restaurants? How much does an avocado cost?

3. TRANSPORTATION. Would you say the public transportation system is efficient? Is the city safe for biking? Will I be able to survive I don't have a car?

4. MUSIC. Allright. So I enjoy experimental music, both listening to and playing. I don't expect Albuquerque to have a huuuge noise or free jazz or actuelle or psych rock or power electronics or even hip hop music scene, but... What kind of music are you guys into? What local bands should I check out? What are the venues/pubs/clubs/coffee shops/concert halls hosting undergroud music events? Ever heard of Luc Ferrari, Pengo, Merzbow, Mika Miko, Die Monitr Batss, Sage Francis...?

5. SCHOOL. So I will be attending UNM. Anyone in the Studio Arts programme? I wanted to take Land Art classes, but they seem a little too advanced for me. I spent the last year studying electronic arts here in Montreal so I feel pretty disconected from reality. Any suggestions on classes I should take? Any general advice reagarding UNM?

6. BEING GAY. Although I refuse to describe myself using my sexual orientation, I am affraid in this case it could be a problem. How tolerant are Albuquerquians to gays and lesbians in general? How's life for the gays/lesbians at UNM? How is the gay/lesbian (esp. lesbian) community/lifestyle? Any advice on dating? Will being 'exotic' be enough? Ha!

7. MAKING FRIENDS. I know this post is getting very long, but I'd like to make contact with some people beofre arriving. I am pretty shy, but very open minded, into music, arts, electronics, cooking and learning stuff through new experiences (how cheezy).

I am crossposting this to [info]abq_underground and [info]albuqueerque.

Thanks.

Feb. 27th, 2007 @ 08:00 am Intro and a request
How I Felt: hopeful
Hi everyone.

I am a regular feature writer for A&U Magazine. A&U, if you don't know it, is focused solely on HIV and the arts. One of the features I do the most is something called the Gallery section, where visual artists (photographers, sculptors, painters, etc.)who are HIV+ and/or whose work reflects an HIV theme is showcased with a brief interview and some of their artwork. This is a nationally distributed monthly magazine -- the last I checked, the circulation was about 125,000.

My request: I am out of artists! So if you are an artist that fits the above criteria, or know one who does, please have them contact me. My email is on my LJ profile.

Thanks a lot!

Aug. 22nd, 2006 @ 09:56 pm City blocks youth event set for Saturday.
From: Mónica Córdova, SW Organizing Project
To: Friends and Supporters,

I am angered to inform you that the event the SWOP youth and the South
Valley Male Involvement Project have been planning for the last three
months has been cancelled. The youth have faced numerous difficulties from the city in trying to put on Rock Out with Your Cause. We received word via our lawyer that the city is not going to grant us the permit to go forth with the event, meant to entertain and educate young people on how to lead healthy and informed lives. Proving once again that the city does notsupport youth.

Attached is the press advisory further explaining the situation and the next steps.
