Jonathan Creek star Alan Davies bit into a homeless man's EAR after going on a massive booze bender.

Paul McElfatrick howled in agony and was bleeding after curly-haired Davies sank his teeth in for 13 seconds.

Jobless Geordie Paul, 40, said he called out to Davies by the name of his sleuth character in the BBC1 series.

He recalled: "I thought he was going to whisper something but his face darkened and he almost spat the words, 'My name's Alan. You know my name - Alan. What's my name? It's Alan'.

"Then he suddenly went for my left ear. It was incredibly painful. I shrieked and my eyes were watering. He hung on and drew blood. I still can't sleep on that side of my head nearly a week later."

Other revellers broke up the 2am fracas outside the posh Groucho Club in London's West End.

"Luckily a big guy came from behind and helped to free me," said Paul. "It seemed like Alan was up for another bout so I got myself out of there as soon as I could."

The former shop worker, who is desperate for a permanent hostel place and earns pennies entertaining tourists in the street, added: "I've seen Alan on TV and he seems so mild mannered.

"He's a bit of mummy's boy really with his sheepish grin and silly jokes. So when I felt his teeth around my ear I just couldn't believe it. I was shaking with shock afterwards.

"You'd think an educated millionaire like him would have more decency."

Cctv film handed to the Mirror shows Davies move off towards taxis then turn to lunge at his victim. Clamping his mouth around Paul's ear, he hangs on for 13 seconds until two women and a man pull them apart. An onlooker said: "Alan went absolutely ballistic. It was really nasty and upsetting to watch. This wasn't horseplay, it was unprovoked and genuinely scary."

He added: "Groucho guests usually know to behave with more decorum. It's outrageous to see a well-heeled man like Alan go for such an underdog. The homeless guy was clearly weak from his time on the streets."

Vegetarian Davies admitted lashing out, saying he was drunk and devastated after giving the eulogy at the funeral of his friend, Jonathan Creek producer Verity Lambert.

At his £1million home in Islington, North London, he said: "I was very upset and emotional. I had a lot to drink over many hours. Far too much really and a lot more than normal but it was an upsetting day.

"I remember this guy coming up and wanting to talk. After a while he started getting aggressive. He began calling me the 'C' word and other names."

Alan, 41, admitted: "I lost it a bit and we had something of a tussle. My friends pulled us apart. I didn't realise he was homeless.

"The next morning I texted my friend to apologise and find out exactly what happened.

"I guess this isn't going to look good, is it? The last thing I want is another negative story about 'that obnoxious Jonathan Creek star'. What's this going to say?"

But told it would be something like 'Jonathan Creek bites tramp's ear' he roared with laughter, saying: "Oh God. I don't mean to laugh but that's funny isn't it?

"Oh God, what a nightmare. I'm really not normally an aggressive guy, honest."

Alas, with much tribulation, I give you "Roman Road" via Megaupload.
