ANGRY YOUNG AND POOR IS TOMORROW! 12PM to 12AM Ester Community Park on the Old Nenana Highway (off the Parks Highway near the Blue Loon). A family friendly event! It's even a fund-raiser for a non-profit (even though it's FREE admission)!
How's AT&T's reception just out of town? I'm thinking about switching to them as a carrier, but have worries about their coverage in goldstream.

The coolest thing happened the other day!!!
Some friends and I were walking along the paths of Creamer's Field. I was lamenting to them that in all the years that I've lived here, I have never seen a frog in Alaska yet. As soon as I finished saying that, I look down...lo and behold, a lonely frog just sitting there looking up at us. I wanted to cry, the awesomeness of that moment for me was so intense.
And that is why 2009 is an awesome year.

Hello everyone,
I'm currently considering relocating to Fairbanks for a position at UAF. I live in Los Angeles currently. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where to look for apartments (edit: in what areas in addition to any websites), shipping or hauling my worldly possessions, car issues, and anything else of which you can think. My grandparents lived in Kodiak when I was younger so I vaguely remember one trip up and down the Alaska highway helping them move back to Southern California.
I grew up in a small town so the idea of living in a city smaller than LA doesn't phase me. Is there anyone who moved up to Fairbanks alone like I might? What cell phone service does everyone use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ETA: One of the places I noticed in the Newsminer was this property company. Any opinions?

Hello all,
Does anyone know if there is a place in town that recycles magazines? I've done some reasearch and while we do have some places that recycle (news to me) there was nothing specifying magazines. Any help would be great!

Yay! Second day of rain! I would have posted on the first day, but I was too busy enjoying it! =D

Because I am on a time crunch, I am going to offer 'grab bags' of my fabric, sewing materials, and crafting items. I have a large collection of stuff ranging from rubber stamp carving tools to heat guns, glue guns, yarn, fabric, fake fur, renaissance patters, grommet clamps...the list goes on.
If you have a specific interest (say you only want thread or something like that) I will make a grab bag pertaining to your interest.
Grab bags will be priced from $10 to $20 per bag. Seriously I will make this worth it! I want to get rid of this stuff quick, so you'll more than likely get triple worth (if not more) of my asking price.
I am going through my sewing room now, but if you want to put in a suggestion for a grab bag and the price you're wanting to pay, I will make that bag for you accordingly.

The bugs are starting to wake up. They've started to enter through the windows but were stop by the plastic I've still got on them.
I vote we kill them all now, before they gain a foothold.

Hey everyone! Sipping Streams Tea Company has just opened a tea house in Fairbanks. They are doing a grand opening on Friday, April 3rd from 5pm to 7pm. There will be free tea and food!!!
I just stopped by there today and had a very yummy, natural(no sugar), mango green tea smoothie and a wonderful salmon salad sandwich (with no crusts!).
They are in the building by Gullivers downstairs from Wok n Roll (where the magic carpet used to be).
What: Sipping Streams Tea House opening
Where: Downstairs from Wok n' Roll (where the old Magic Carpet was)
When: Friday, April 3rd 5pm - 7pm

I have two adult bikes for sale, $50 each OBO. One is a 'fred meyer special' bought two years ago for just over $100. It has only been used twice and is in good condition, just needs some air in the tires. The other is a schwinn and I rode this bike practically every day last summer. It is in good condition, may need new tires in the near future, though.
I have two sewing machines for sale. One is an older model surger and the other is a couple year old Brother. Both still work well, though the surger's thread holder has been re-glued to the back. I am looking to get $40 for each, OBO Let me know if you'd like the model numbers.
Has anyone in the Interior ever tried raising Guinea Fowl? I know plenty of people try chickens up here, but I have yet to meet anyone with guineas. I'm curious as to whether or not it's really possible, given their needs and habits.

Satellite internet providers available in the Fairbanks area...?
Also, are any of them particularly great/lousy?

Sometimes I think drivers in Fairbanks are the oddest bunch of people.
Twice so far this winter, I've seen two different cars take chances that nearly got them in wrecks.
Both were at the intersection of Deborah Ave. and College Rd. Deborah is that little side road in between the College Corner and the Gulliver's parking lot. I've included the google maps view so everyone knows where I'm talking about.

One time, while waiting to turn left from Deborah on to College, someone in a Bronco passed me on the right, but turned left in front of me on to College and in front an oncoming car. The oncoming car was why I was waiting. He narrowly missed the car, and got a nice red light while waiting to get on to campus.
The second time, someone was turning left from College on to Deborah, again I'm waiting to turn left in the exact same spot. There was lots of room in his lane and to my right for people turning. Instead of turning in to his lane (the side nearest the coffee hut), he turned in to my lane and passed me on my right hand side (the Gulliver's side) nearly hitting a bicyclist. He went straight in to the Tesoro parking lot from there. It made me shake my head, and left we wondering what the hell that was about?
I'm not sure what it is about that intersection.

Does anyone have the names/numbers of the native homebuying assistance places?
On a related note, I have a slumlord in serious violation of the AK landlord and tenants' rights act. Unfortunately, he's been out of the country for nearly 2 years straight and his contact info is no longer current. Nobody knows where this guy is, the people he left in charge were not given power of attorney and cannot do essential maintenance on the units, and there are a bunch of us who are completely screwed because the boiler is basically kaput. Is there anyone I can call about this?

So, I ripped open the arm to my old jacket. I could fix it with ducttape, but it wasn't a really good jacket to begin with. And I'm outside a lot, so a good jacket is important and stuff. So, I started looking around at the usual suspects at the Prospectors, Big Rays, etc. I eventually settled on something from Midnight Mushing, bought it, and wore it for a full day outside, in which I realized that it's
a) hands down some of the highest quality sewing there's to be had, but
b) cut for someone with different dimensions than me.
Long story short, I got a lot of cold air infiltration down the back. Prospector's return policy rocks.
So. I know there's Apocalypse designs (looking at the `Alpine`), but they're mondo backordered currently. What else is there for good winter parkas? Anyone got something in particular jacket-wise that they think is pretty dang good?

Does anyone know of a therapist, counselor, psychiatrist, or psychologist in town who is particularly good at dealing with bipolar patients? Thanks!
