A-list Chinese pop singers and musicians gathered at the National Olympic Center on Friday night for the annual Beijing Pop Music Awards gala, one of the most influential events that honors excellence in the industry. Pop veteran Wang Leehom dominated this year’s ceremony by notching four awards, while veteran rocker Wang Feng followed with three wins. Jane Zhang won Best Female Artist for the fourth time in a row, which brought her to tears rarely seen from the singer, especially as she thought of how she missed her mom and how as a busy aspiring artist, she had few opportunities to see her and talk to her. Returning veteran Han Hong beat out Chris Li Yuchun for most popular female artist. Song Zuying, the queen of folk, made a special surprise appearance.

Tang Wei in her latest film 'Late Autumn'

First portrayal of Tang Wei as a prisoner in Korean director Kim Tae-yong's 'Late Autumn' was unveiled recently. The actress in a yellow trench coat gives the audience very cold and detached looks from her eyes.

In the play, Tang Wei is an obedient, well-behaved prisoner on her holiday who encounters Korean heartthrob Hyeon Bin's role of a runaway counterfeiter.

The film about their short-lived three-day romance is an English-language remake of Korean art-house classic 'Manchu', literally "Full Autumn," by director Lee Man-hee in the 1960s.
As a Korean-American co-production, the film started shooting in Seattle on Jan. 12. It is slated for release in South Korea later this year.

Tang Wei has previously played opposite Hong Kong singer-actor Jacky Cheung in another romantic art-house film "Crossing Hennessy."

Mainland actress Li Bingbing graced the cover of Vogue February issue, Taiwan. Li Bingbing won the Best actress title at the 46th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei 2009 for her performance in the spy thriller film 'The Message'.

In an accompanying interview with the magazine, the actress played down the excitement of winning over the prize.

"I believe in destiny. You get what you deserve and lose what's not yours. So I don't ask too much in life and won't be affected by things around me."

The actress recalled her thrill at the award-winning moment but revealed she was quite clear in mind, whether she won it or not, she was still herself.

Li Bingbing, who once called herself a "later bloomer", has been in the industry for over a decade but was not the highly influential figure that she is today until she took home the best actress title for 'Yun Shui Yao' or 'The Ballad of Cloud and Water' in 2008.

The actress is now using her present stardom to influence and give back more to society. She assumed the Green Ambassador of China Environmental Protection Foundation a couple of years ago and has done a great deal in promoting public awareness of environmental protection.

BEIJING -- Peter Chan Ho Sun will produce director Vincent Kok's comedic action picture "Incredible Couple," about ancient Chinese husband and wife superheroes drawn out of retirement into a martial arts competition.

"It's 'Mr. & Mrs Smith' meets 'The Incredibles' in the Qing dynasty," said Katherine Lee, executive vp of We Pictures, the Hong Kong-based company leading the start of the $7.5 million production in China in March.

The film stars Hong Kong's "Queen of Comedy" Sandra Ng and compatriot Louis Koo as the couple who retire from crime fighting to open a village restaurant. The picture will shoot on location and at the Hengdian World Studios outside Shanghai, Lee told The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Kok's last project was the 2009 Lunar New Year hit comedy "All's Well That Ends Well," also starring Ng and Koo.

TAIPEI: Singer Jay Chou's maiden attempt at directing a television drama suffered poor ratings after it debuted on Friday in Taiwan.

"Pandamen", which Chou had earlier described as "cool", is a science fiction action drama about two superheroes from differing backgrounds who share a fascination with pandas.

The 30-year-old singer-director even expressed that he was confident the 110 million Taiwan dollars (about S$5.5million) production would be a success. However, the show's poor ratings indicate his confidence may have been misplaced.

"Pandamen", which aired on CTS, one of the four major television stations in Taiwan, attracted the least number of viewers among television shows in the same 10 pm timeslot. Chou's "Pandamen" only managed to garner 0.77 in ratings, compared to shows like the talent contest "One Million Star" (2.18) and idol dramas "K.O. 3an Guo" (1.53) and "Lucky Days" (0.79).

Viewers complained that "Pandamen" had a childish, convoluted plot that was hard to follow and pointed out that the show seemed to cater specifically for Mainland audiences as the cast often delivered their lines in Mainland-accented Mandarin.

Chou, who recently appeared in the film "The Treasure Hunter", brushed off these complaints and wrote on his official website that he "did not need high ratings". He insisted that the show was a success as "it represents a new generation of heroes" and "was a historic moment".

CTS officials also backed him and pointed out that "Pandamen" was the highest-rated show on its 10 pm slot in nearly a year.

The drama's poor showing in Taiwan was preceded by its dismal results when it first aired in Guangzhou, China. "Pandamen" was shown for three days on Guangzhou Television in late January.

Guangzhou Television reportedly paid an astronomical sum for the broadcast rights to the show, but "Pandamen" only managed to attract about 5,000 viewers on its third day, making it the lowest-rated show in the station's history.

At that time, many believed that complaints of a messy plot were due to heavy-handed Chinese censors cutting out crucial scenes for depicting gunplay.

However, "Pandamen" aired completely uncut in Taiwan.

Chou, who plays a police commissioner and appears for just two and a half minutes on the show, will reportedly attend a meet-the-fans session at Huashan Cultural Park on February 27, in an attempt to resuscitate the flat-lining show.

Chinese actor-singer Chen Kun staged his first ever solo concert at Beijing's Chaoyang Stadium on Thursday, an event that coincides with his 34th birthday.

The heartthrob played a set list comprised of tracks from his past four albums and title tunes from TV series and movies in which he starred, according to a report on Sohu.com.

Guest singer Chen Chusheng sang "Happy Birthday" to Chen Kun, while fellow actress Zhou Xun also came onstage and presented him with a birthday cake.

In the audience were many of Chen's filmmaker friends, including Han Sanping, Tsui Hark, Zhao Baogang and Li Shaohong.

"I hope they will let me sing the title songs of their productions – that's why I invited so many directors today," Chen said.

His most recent movie credits include "Mulan," "Founding of a Republic" and "Painted Skin." One of his best-known roles for international audiences was in "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress."

After being released on the 5th, the new movie Monga has reportedly broke the 10 million (NTD) mark in Taipei. Its accumulative box office in Taiwan is estimated at 20 million so far, and has taken over the number one spot from Avatar. The first day of ticket sales also surpassed Avatar’s numbers which debuted on December 17th and New Moon on December 14th.

Monga has been heavily promoted since it began filming. From on-set visits, fan meetings, to it massive premiere, it has been labeled as the new wave of Taiwanese films. Not only it is being played on 120 screens, even theaters that rarely show local movies are playing Monga. Many youthful fans lined up early to get a ticket on the 5th, which is something that hasn’t been seen since Cape No. 7.

The two stars of Monga talk about love and growing up in the new issue of Men’s Uno.

Passionate, Ethan Ruan. Calm and introverted, Mark Chao. That is how we generally view them when they are interviewed individually. When the introverted Mark Chao meets the lively Ethan Ruan, passion melts the distance created by calmness. The two boys would forget about the passers-by’s who were also in the studio once they are together. They joke around and have fun among themselves.

BEIJING -- MTV Networks China has moved its "SpongeBob SquarePants" streaming videos over to a co-branded China Central Television Web site in a bet that it's safest to work with a state-run broadcaster while regulators sort the ways of the Web.

Online video in China, where there are 380 million Web surfers, holds great potential for advertisers, but the space also is riddled with pirated content and overshadowed by a government that blocks sites such as Google's YouTube.

Mei Yan, MTV Networks China general manager, agreed that the launch Thursday of the new Chinese-language site -- nick.cctv.com -- to feature Nickelodeon content just seven months after the launch of an earlier, independent site, had a lot to do with the partner.
