new here

hello, all, new here...thought I'd like to pop in and say hello. I just started training in the local dojo, I worked a little with a friend earlier this year, enough to really turn me onto it. He got me past the initial rolls, and introduced me to a little shiho nage and ikkyo...but he has so much going on he really doesn't have time to train anyone. As much as I miss training with him, I find I really love the dojo, and my boys are training there as well, or at least the two bigger ones, so it kind of makes it a family thing. I'm sore, mat burned and deliriously happy...

Hey... you Aikidoka might find this amusing. Because I had training yesterday and Aiki = t3h rawking-est. I've been out of training for ages and ages and it just feels so good to get back into the dojo again. Even if I have matching yonkyo-bruises on both my wrists now =P

Brought to you courtesy of Aikiweb and The Aikido FAQ =)

Martial Arts Definitions
Aikido:
A martial art which allows you to defeat your enemy without hurting him. Unless of course he does not know how to ukemi in which case he will have his wrist broken in about 20 places.

Arnis:
"Harness of the hand." A Filpino martial art, also known as eskrima and kali, centering around stick, blade and empty hand combat. Mispronunciation of the art guarantees a quick taste.

Bo:
A stick.

Bokken:
A stick that looks like a sword.

Dan:
A term used in the Japanese martial arts for anyone who has achieved the rank of at least first-degree black belt.

Darn:
The sound uttered when the wearer of a Dan realizes that they will now get hit harder and more frequently during training.

Dojo:
"The place of the way." A training hall or gymnasium. Very similar to a B & D parlor but without the mistress.

Hakama:
A skirt sometimes worn in the Martial Arts but we don't really like to talk about it.

Iaido:
"Way of the sword." The modern art of drawing the samurai sword from its scabbard. A rather interesting art developed around the principle of "look how big mine is".

Judo:
"Gentle way." A Japanese art where grown men roll around cuddling each other without apparently doing any damage. These men are often closet Hakama wearers.

Jujitsu:
A lot like judo expect that these boys like to inflict slightly more damage. Tend to get very angry when accused of being Hakama wearers and often are heard saying "You gotta big mouth"

Karate:
"Empty hand" or "China hand." The primary purpose of this art is the destruction of wood and other natural products. Most Karate styles have a placing on Greenpeace's most wanted list. This art will be outlawed by most countries by the turn of the century.

Kata:
A series of prearranged maneuvers practiced in many of the Oriental martial arts in order to avoid free sparring or anything else that may involve pain.

Kendo:
A strange and unusual past-time involving hitting each other with sticks and making in-human sounds. Could be a cult?

Kung fu:
A generic term for a majority of the Chinese martial arts. Many of these arts involve the emulation of animals.

Master:
A title bestowed on a martial artist who has attained advanced rank after long years of study or has started his own style after achieving kyu grades in at least 4 arts, or has completed the "Become a Master by Video" course available for only 19.95 per month.

Ninja:
A rather confused individual who likes sneaking around at night in his pajamas.

Ninjutsu:
The art of being confused and sneaking around in your pajamas

Sparring:
Bashing each other senseless in the hope that nobody realizes that you don't know any kata or techniques.

Tae kwon do:
An unusual martial art that relies on its followers to have the flexibility of a professional ballet dancer.

Tai chi chuan:
Another unusual art that promises ultimate power from moving very slowly for many years. The drawback being that by the time you develop the ultimate power you are close to death anyway.

Zen:
The discipline of enlightenment related to the Buddhist doctrine that emphasizes meditation, discipline, and the direct transmission of teachings from master to student. Mostly taught by rather old and confused monks who have had one too many rocks fall on their heads during waterfall meditation. Works best when sitting in a cave facing a wall for 10 years or so.

Aikido Definitions
Aikido: The way of blending energy. The Aikidoka (one who practices Aikido) attempts to become one with the mat by being thrown into it repeatedly in the hope that s/he will merge with the mat. This usually doesn't happen, so the process must be repeated. Frequently.

Matte: "te" = hand, "mat" is obvious, so "mat" "te" is the art of hand-stands and walking on hands. Sometimes this results in unsuccessful blending with the mat which causes the Aikidoka to have to blend with the mat while wearing a cast. This is much harder, as the cast prevents the Aikidoka from reaching the mat.

Kiai-do: Dyslexic Aikido. Also known as "drunken Aikido", this is usually practised in bars, accompained by much shouting.

Ukemi: The art of hurling yourself at the Earth for no good reason.

Slapping out: This is the sign of an unsuccesful blending with the mat. The Aikidoka is so frustrated at not blending with the mat that s/he will hit the mat in a futile attempt to blend. It is futile because all Aikidoka know that true blending with the mat only occurs at high speed.

Nage-waza: The art of helping others to blend with the mat - the other part of what Aikidoka study.

Randori: Mispronunciation of "runned away". This is the optimal method of blending with multiple attackers.

Shodan(male): A male who is so adept at blending (and helping others to blend) that he can wear a skirt to class and nobody in class will laugh at him because he might help them learn to blend with the mat. At high velocity.

Hakama: What shodans call a skirt so they don't have to teach quite as many people to blend with the mat (see Shodan(male)).

Atemi: What you use to convince uke that your Aikido is strong enough to deal with their attack.

Shihans: Can't live with 'em; can't throw 'em.

Alternative Technique Definitions
Ikkyo: Grab their arm, affect their center.

Nikkyo: Grab their arm differently, affect their center.

Sankyo: Grab their arm differently, affect their center.

Yonkyo: Grab their arm differently, inflict pain, affect their center.

Gokyo: Grab their arm differently but a lot like Ikkyo, affect their center.

Rokkyo: A confection made with almond paste. If you eat too much it will affect your center.

Irimi nage: Don't grab their arm, affect their center.

Shihonage: Kotegaeshi on steroids.

Kotegaeshi: Sankyo on the wrong hand.

Kaiten nage: Sankyo while rotating the z axis to the xy plane. Countergrab their arm, affect their center. Alternately known as "cheap date waza".

Tenchi nage: Iriminage on both sides at the same time.

Koshi nage: Iriminage for those with ADS (Altitude Deficit Syndrome).

You know you're hooked on Aikido when...
1.The first word out of your parrot's mouth is 'KIAI!' and you teach your cat how to do mae ukemi.

2.	You have more bruises than a roller derby queen, and you still go back for more.

3.	You shut the refrigerator door with a shomen-uchi.

4.	You shop for clothes based on whether you can practice in them.

5.	The only clothes you'll wear are gis.

6.	You actually crave a beach workout.

7.	The books on your night stand are by authors like Morihei Ueshiba, Morihito Saito and Miyamoto Musashi.

8.	The Twelve Days of Christmas becomes: one iaito, two bokken, three gi's, four rolls of adhesive tape...
...twelve cases of Tiger Balm.

9.	You look for a place to live based on the amount of practice space it provides.

10.	You refuse to wear shoes.

Oh, and I'm from Aikido Shinju-Kai of Aikikai Singapore. 5th Kyu. Heh.. still got lots to learn yet =)

===agatsu masakatsu katsuhayabi===

Tee. =)

Hi everyone. I am Kohai(soon to be senpai) David Cougle, a shodan in the Shindoryu Aikijutsu Association. Our dojo is in Hammond, Louisiana(1hr from new orleans) at southeastern university. Our teacher is Rokudan Eric Templet Shihan. This is the closest community I could find to what we do, so I thought I'd just say hi.

Our website(soon to have some new pictures) is at
http://www.shindoryu.com

Hey are any of you from Washington? More specifically near the Silverdale/Bremerton area? I just moved their on orders and I have been looking around for a dojo to continue my studies...I am thinking that I will probably join Kitsap Aikido. I checked it out and I was extremely impressed. As soon as I get settled I am going to take them up on their offer to try out a class or two.

I think I might take up martial arts/self defense classes for the summer. I took Aikido for two years--liked it a lot but got tired of such a big commitment of time/money/no air conditioning. Also now I live about 10 miles from that place. My local Y offers Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do--which do you think is most similar to Aikido/which one would I like the most?

crossposted to aikido and my own journal

Is anyone else going to this? Looks like it will be a blast - good to see all the original Shihans, especially as they're getting older, and might not be able to make it out to many more of these. Also - will be awesome to see Doshu!

I'm from the dojo Aikido De La Montagne.
To Train or Not to Train?

A Question for you all:

I hurt my wrist in early January, from a combo of a sudden kotegaishi, and later that same day, a vicious nikyo. As a result, my wrist semi painfully "cracks" when i rotate it - a loud crack every time - and is especially painful when I do any weapon's training that require wrist rotation, i.e. spinning the jo, or even just sudden changes in grip with a boken. Sankyo produces similar results.

Now, I can tape it up hard with hockey tape, and it's "ok" to practice with...doesn't hurt too much when I do that.

So, my question is - keep practicing, or take as much as a month off, hoping for it to heal? I've been practicing for almost three years, and usually i've been able to "practice off" an injury, but this one is proving stubborn. Advice?

I don't know if *everyone* is aware of the existence of it, or if
there's just some schism between the two communities that I'm unaware
of and I'm about to get flamed to within an inch of my life...

...but there's a much more active community of aikido students at

aikido.

Peace,
Z

P.S.: I've joined here; I don't intend to *unjoin*, but if anybody
on this list was missing the more lively-ish discussion...

Long Time...

It looks like it has been a while since anyone has posted to this community, so I will be honored if I may once again speak up and break the lingering silence.

Regretfully I am unable to continue my Aikido training at this time. I am preparing to enter the military and I work all the time just to make ends meet. The times that the dojo offered classes here were on the same nights that I had to work. It hurts not being able to continue my training. I have such a love for this, our art.

Though I am unable to continue my training officially, I still continue to train on my own; taking with me the gifts that have been bestowed upon me. Not only physical, but the spiritual and mental as well.

This art has taught me much and continues to everytime I set myself to practice. Aikido for me has been a blessing. Not an art for violence, but an art for peace and harmony within. A new tool which allows me to battle the demons within.

With every graceful movement I take down the Self one notch lower, but this battle takes time; perhaps even a lifetime.

Aikido, a blessed art.

Violent crimes can affect anyone at anytime, regardless of where they live or work. Such crimes include assault, domestic violence, robbery, car jacking, rape and murder.
It just occured to me that the aikido techniques we are taught were all developed on beating the shit out of subjugated Okinawans during the Japanese occupation. So much for "universal love", huh? No wonder they invented Karate.

Greetings. I have entered this community just recently and wanted to say hello. I am an Aikidoka of the Tan-Aiki Dojo. Aikido has awakened in me a sense of more than just a sense of security, but an enlightenment to seek Aiki. I am looking forward to getting to know you all and becoming an active member in this community.

Be well always.

Hello all

Hello all I am new to the community. I unfortunately have not had the chance to practice the physical aspect of Aikido as of yet, but have been studying the philosophy of it for some time now. I have my black belt in Tae Kwon Do but I attained it when I was 12, I am now 22 and since then have had very little time to practice as much as I would have liked to, but have still tried to at least practice once a month if not lately once a week. I live no where near any dojos, the closest thing as far as martial arts dojos near me is another Tae Kwon Do school at a local strip mall. How ever I have been doing my best to keep in the frame of mind, and to learn the philosophy of the art. I also have a strong interest in bushido, Shinto, shaolin kung fu, and wing chung kung fu. if no one minds I would also like to possibly make a daily post to this community each containing an excerpt from the Hagakure. a big request in my book, so please let me know what you think. Thank you, and I hope to talk to you all soon.

Why is it that at least once a week, I have a conversation with someone that consists of this, basically?

Idiot: Hey, I have a friend, who's female and like 5'3" and like 120lbs who's been doing martial arts for 5 years. I'm 6'0" and 180lbs, and have been working out every day for 10 years, and can (insert bench press, number of pushups, etc). She says that she could beat me. I don't believe that.
Me: Yes, she probably could.
Idiot: But how, I mean, like, I'm strong, and she's, like, so tiny.
Me: Because martial arts is not just about strengthening the body, it's about training the mind. For instance, I am 5'0", 95lbs, and have thrown a 6'9" man across a room.
Idiot: Wow, really? You must be really good.
Me: I have trained for fewer years than your friend.
Idiot: But I still don't understand how she could beat me, I'm like all strong and stuff. So she could like hold me down and stuff?
Me: Most likely.
Idiot: Wow. But she's so small, like how does it work?
Me: Go visit a martial arts class.
Idiot: Okay.
Me: Bye now.

God they irritate me so much!
