About:[info]after_fanfic is a community specifically designed for fanfiction writers of all fandoms who wish to expand or move on to original writing. Despite its reputation in the publishing world as a legal grey area and, sometimes, a form of plagiarism, fanfiction is a brilliant, well-rounded way to improve one's writing, editorial, and critiquing skills. However, there comes a time when you've just gotta pay the rent.

As there had been a change of management since the former managers either left or just flat out couldn't fit it into their busy schedules, there is good news and...well...more good news. (hopefully) From now on, there is a new feature! (*psst. Here's where you cheer) Every month, the submitted fiction (fan or otherwise) will be read and re-read by Tiff and I and of course the other members. And the end of the month, we'll put up a post for people to pick their favorite and the winner of the month's account will get a completely free upgrade to paid account for the next month, until we pick our next winner. What This Community Is

A forum for fanfiction writers of all degrees and regards (from no-name to big-name fans) who are interested in moving on to original fiction, whether as a hobby or a full-time profession. It is not limited by fandom, which would be silly since we're not dealing with fanfiction here. However, we've all got the same basic literary background, and all have to deal with moving on from a world that's already been created to creating worlds of our own.

This forum was created in order to provide a way for us to display our stories for critique without risk of losing "first printing" status by posting them in a public forum. Since many editors only buy first printing rights, should something be available on the Net, it is usually considered already published and therefore cannot be sold. Rough drafts, finished pieces in need of a last look-see, and outlines in need of nitpicking are all welcome.

Those interested in critiquing or editing are also welcome, although if you're only interested in a "first peek" at stories to come, we ask you to please not join, as that contradicts the purpose of the group.

Relevant topics include: fiction and critique; discussion of literary styles; good places to start getting published; grammar; the differences between fan- and original fiction; original non-fiction; original poetry; any other issues directly or indirectly related to moving from fan- to original fiction (such as portfolios, handling of previous work, and proper etiquette for submission - which we really haven't got).

This is also a way to gain the tough hide a writer needs to survive in the dog-eat-dog, cutthroat world of publishing. If you can't take crit, you'll never succeed as a writer. However, it's easier to start building your hide when the crit is coming from your friends rather than an editor you'll probably never meet.

What This Community Is Not

This is not a place to post stories you have no interest in attempting to publish, or stories not written in the process of becoming a serious writer. Those can go in your own journal. This is specifically a protected community designed to prevent loss of first printing rights.

This is not a forum for lurkers. You may go a long time between posts or serious comments/criticisms, but anyone found joining simply to read the stories will be removed. (Anyone found re-joining simply to read the stories will be banned with extreme prejudice.)

This is most certainly not a place to bitch about a rejection, or how mean an editor or publication was to you and your story. I don't need libel suits, guys. If you want to bitch, do it on your own time.

Rules

1. You must take part, either as a writer, an editor, or a serious critiquer. You do not have to constantly take part in discussions, but you do have to make yourself a useful part of the group. "LOLOMG THAT WUZ SOOOOOO GOOD LOL!!!!1111!1!one!!" does not input make.

2. You will behave yourselves like rational adults. If you have a personal problem with someone in the forum, keep it in your own journal. Anyone caught flaming will be banned faster than you can say, "You suck!"

3. No whining, pouting, or complaining that someone didn't like your story. Everyone gets rejected, and everyone has to deal with critics. As stated above, one purpose of this forum is to build a bulletproof hide.

4. ALL story posts must be members-locked. To do this, friends-lock your post. This way, it will be considered part of a private discussion and, hence, not published. (Discussion of other things, such as how to write a good cover letter, are perfectly welcome to be left open.)

5. Any total length is welcome, but please keep your posts to a reasonable length. Just to make things easier on everyone else, try to post stories in chunks of 3,000 words or less, and no more than two of them in a row. (Length won't be strictly enforced, but just try to be kind.) 6. For reasons of privacy, posting is and will be restricted to registered users. Sorry, guys.

7. The moderator is God here. She's nice and bouncy and sweet until you piss her off. After that, she's the crankiest, twitchiest summatch you'll ever meet in your life. (To avoid pissing her off, play nice and follow the rules.)

7b. The moderator is notorious for getting caught up in Real Life and never getting back to her emails. If something's desperately important, post it in her journal - that's [info]merlechan's - or on the forum itself (ideally in a members-locked post). If you really want to try emailing her, put "After Fanfic" or something similar in the subject line. Should all else fail, try our Honourary Mod [info]tagtraumer_cho's journal; she can either sort problems herself, or pester Donna in a more direct way until she gets her butt in gear. Thanks!
