Just came back from a walk in our woods.
The red trilliums are almost finished blooming.

There's a tree right outside my room window that's blossoming and I love it. I took some photos (which are kind of rubbish, but oh well). At first I saw all sorts of trees around blossoming and was kind of bummed that this tree wasn't.. but then it became a wonderful pink blossom fest!

An introduction and a question

Hello from the middle of the North American continent where trees are rarely seen! Oddly, they grow well when planted here, but they don't establish naturally. Growing up in a flat and treeless land means the sky is nine-tenths of your world. The first time I visited in a forest I was surprised by a feeling of claustrophobia. I've gotten over that now.

I found this community because I have a burning need to find out the name of a specific tree I've seen in cities all over Europe. It's a question I've had for almost ten years now and it's driving me nuts! It's a maple tree with a very unique bark. It's a smooth, grey bark which peels off to reveal multiple coloured layers below: green, tan, yellow...

The only digital picture I have is one I took in Germany earlier this month in a village along the Rhein River. But I've seen these trees in England, France, and Spain also. The trees in this picture have been pruned in a French manner and don't naturally look like this. If anyone can help me identify these maple trees I will truly appreciate it.

Cemetery snows

One of the prettiest things about the Rosary Cemetery is the network of little leafy paths that run along the contour of the hill. The combination of Monday's snow and Tuesday's sunny weather made for the perfect photography conditions.

My husband went out skiing today and took this picture of an otter's sliding trail going up and down our back hill. It would have been fun to have seen the otter playing.

Woodland Stream in St. Mary's Vale in Wales

I went for a walk up Sugar Loaf, north of Abergavenny yesterday. The first part was through woodland, first of beech, then of sessile oak. Around the stream both species were represented. The beeches have smooth, muscular trunks, the oaks have characteristically furrowed bark.

Chiltern Beech Woods in Mid-September

The Chilterns are a range of limestone hills to the west of London in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. These photos are from mid-September this year. They were taken on Holland Ridge, near Northend, Christmas Common and Turville Heath.

Beech woods do well on the limestone.

Beech leaves are positioned to make maximum use of sunlight. Very little of the precious rays are let through and reach the forest floor. That's why there is usually very little undergrowth in pure beech woods once the canopy closes in early summer.

But it's not a mono culture. The odd other tree, like a maple, get a look-in too. These woodlands are not managed harshly.

I found some yew trees, too, near the edge of the woods. Drops from a recent shower sparkle on the needles.
