Oddly, they grow well when planted here, but they don't establish naturally. Growing up in a flat and treeless land means the sky is&nbsp;nine-tenths of your world. The first time I visited in a forest I was surprised by&nbsp;a feeling of claustrophobia. I've gotten over that now.<br /><br />I found this community because I have a burning need to find out the name of a specific tree I've seen in cities all over Europe. It's a question I've had for almost&nbsp;ten years now and it's driving me nuts! It's a maple tree with a very unique bark. It's a smooth, grey bark which peels off to reveal multiple coloured layers below: green, tan, yellow...<br /><br />The only digital picture I have is one I took in Germany earlier this month in a village along the Rhein River. But I've seen these trees in England, France, and Spain also. The trees in this picture have been pruned in a French manner and don't naturally look like this. The first part was through woodland, first of beech, then of sessile oak. Around the stream both species were represented.
