    DND in Bullets:
    * I joined [info]alkrumbach's Mutants & Masterminds roleplaying game campaign last evening (with [info]seanpatfannon from work also joining us). I built a character immensely powerful if given 10 or 20 minutes, but who's almost totally useless in combat. It's the out-of-the-box Occult Investigator from the M&M Book of Magic with some magical sensory powers and wealth piled on him. He's somewhere between being usefully intelligent and being the Johnny Thunder (circa WW2) of the team.

    * Our "Christmas in July" sale (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/rpg_xmas_in_july.php?SRC=lj) is going well. We beat last year's first-day sales. From my end, I'm getting better at little web page flourishes to brand a sale without breaking the site, which is nice since the web-based aspects of my job are 75% problem-solver and 20% developer, but only 5% designer.

    * I'm not at Comic-Con. This disappoints me. However, I'm aiming for New York. I'm armed with business cards and pretty, pretty flyers.

    * PSI is watching a training video. It feels like I'm listening to a PBS nature special about warehouse workers.

    * I'm debating going to the 2nd monthly Forsaken game at the Campartment. I'm not seeing the thrill of playing a werewolf at the mo', but I like hanging out with the people.

    * I have not seen Dark Knight. I must see Dark Knight. The beau's schedule is full, so I'll prob'ly see it (*snf* - alone) at the tiny (ie. non-IMAX) theater. Anyone interested? I'm a WoW widow this weekend.

[Aberrant] S. Park, a Directive field monitor, sends a file of typical OpNet mentions of the Directive to media relations director J. Yarbrough.

In general, most people think of the Directive as just a multinational intelligence agency of middling competence, to the extent they think of it at all, an impression (or lack thereof) its official OpSite does a lot to foster.

Next up is a chat room sample from "GeoPol, the global political discussion site". Park considers their belligerent, fat-assed back-and-forth typical of what gets said by whom about the Directive in chat rooms: "A lot of people with a little information and no manners stomping around making broad statements they can't back."

The Phipps-Gordon interview is next, with some background from Park that I didn't include in the earlier post: John Gordon's departure from the CIA apparently "had to do with a Directive-led operation that was mishandled from the CIA end", for whose failure Gordon was blamed.

This is followed by a scene from the conspiracy thriller Blood and Blue, in which the Big Bad (or maybe just the Dragon, I dunno) is a Directive nova typical of Directive agents in Hollywood and Bollywood films, the majority of whom are

vile über-patriots willing to kill to keep their secrets. The rest are usually bumbling idiots who have no idea how to survive on the streets and must be shown the way the real world works by a street-smart, hip, urban cop.

Lastly, Park presents an email from John Tweeddale, marketing manager of Dramatic Designs, to Thomas Vietch, one of his action-figure designers (did the sculpts on the The Elites: At War! series), noting the flaws in Vietch's suggested line of Directive figures: the lack of existing marketing, plus "the idea of 10 identically dressed figures with varying accessories is so early 90s."

[Aberrant] Science magazine carries an article, "The Greening of Ethiopia: How Long Can It Last?"

Sharon D. Isenberg of FSU-Tallahassee, lead author of "Long-term Effects of Operation Eden" (Bull. Am. Met. Soc., November 2007), points out that, while it is indeed breathtaking, "there is evidence that the environment Operation Eden created on the Ethiopian plateau is not self-sustaining and may never be." Nova intervention is still required to keep the changes from reversing themselves.

Our old friend Nimal Dharmasena disagrees: "One need only look out at the transformation of the Ethiopian landscape to be convinced of the success of Operation Eden.... What garden doesn't require tilling and weeding?"

Isenberg is unconvinced: "The transformation of Ethiopia is remarkable, of that there is no doubt. The question is... will their miracle become self-sustaining or remain an artificial garden, dependent on nova 'caretakers' forever?"

I'm liking Dungeons & Dragons 4e. We started a casual, low-rp jaunt through H1-Keep on the Shadowfell, and while it's a pretty uninspired module (surprisingly so from Bruce Cordell), we're all having a great time (except maybe [info]wolfwalker, who really wanted to play Twilight Imperium, but was sweet enough to run Shadowfell for us).

I'm playing the pre-generated Dragonborn Paladin. Everyone else created their own original characters. [info]lucklesswillow is playing our Elvish Ranger, Clay is playing an Eladrin Cleric (Fearless Leader), [info]planb_5 is playing our Tiefling Warlock, and [info]alkrumbach is playing our Eladrin Wizard.

The game offers a lot more excitement for 1st-level characters than prior versions of D&D, and every class has something to do in a battle. I'm not seeing a lot of wiggle room for out-of-the-box thinking, but - IIRC - D&D has never been big on that at low levels.

Once we're done with this first module, we're planning to continue, prob'ly getting more in depth with the play style (right now, it's very Zork-like).

It's now been established - as least in our chronicle - that Dragonborn speak with a very "moose and squirrel" Russian accent. I couldn't help myself (tho' I missed a bet by not going Japanese and naming my Paladin Gojira).

More about what's up with me
Got my car back last week. However, they didn't fix the problem and I'm actually pretty sure they knew they hadn't and tried to keep me from finding out. That said, with some experimentation I've been able to work out what's causing whatever it is that's screwing up the windows and can somewhat easily avoid it while I sort out what I'm going to do next. Whatever happens, I'm not taking it back to them again. They can kiss both sides of my ass.

The search for a replacement for the Book n Bean continues. I haven't been able to check out the only other coffee shop I've found in town, because apparently they close at 4pm. Which doesn't exactly mesh with my evening writing excursions. Looks like my options are most likely going to be out of town, which is a pain in the ass because I spend half the week out of town as it is.

Writing has been continuing regardless to the best of my ability, and I've been more or less managing so far. In other news, I've posted the latest of my L5R fanfics, "A Bitter Wind," at my L5R fanfic page. I've got another Tales of Journey's End story that I need to format and put up there as well but for the moment it can be found in the Fanfiction forum at Alderac's website.

[Aberrant] Montreal city councilman Marcus Smith, a known proponent of Quebec's faltering Anglophone movement and of the United Canada agenda, is found dead in his penthouse apartment; the RCMP have no doubts that he was murdered and that a nova was responsible. A note left at the scene on behalf of Citoyens pour le supremacy [sic] des français declares that Quebec will be free from English tyranny, whatever the cost.

It's the 17th such death of an Anglophone in the last four years. Apparently, the TU's Montréal really is a place where militant Francophones will ignore even the most desperate pleas for help if they happen to be phrased en Anglais. Unless the sweet bird specifically confirms this, I'm going to chalk it up to White Wolf editors (who, you may notice in the sidebar, are now a tag) aiming for satire and achieving only snottiness.

This month in the Trinity Universe: theories
    Sorry for the delay.

    July
[Aberrant] This month's issue of Science Explorer announces that next month, 10 patients at the Triton Foundation's Atlanta Mediplex will be test subjects for an artificial kidney.

This is probably in Aberrant: Project Utopia, but I'm disinclined to dig for where. Turns out it's in the Technology section of Aberrant: Year One.

One of the first installments of Nathan Black's new N! show Eye on... includes an interview with Dr. Tasmin Harver, newly inducted Utopian and the head examiner at Slider's autopsy, for whom Black and his audience have some questions about Utopia.

Some rather pointed questions, which she tries to dodge or deflect; the excerpt ends just as she's about to have take the first of them, from galfrey07@stuntmail.com.

Devon "Slider Fetish" Works makes a scathing post to the "Rant Back" OpList, addressed to "Dear Losers and Future Losers Alike", in which he pours out a long string of sneers at anyone with any doubts about Utopia's fundamental and immutable benevolence, lumping those who merely have worries about Proteus using the Utopia agenda as cover with those who wear tinfoil hats to protect their thoughts against "the great stamping juggernaut that is Project Utopia."

This is the one that's actually been holding this post up, as I can't look directly at it for too long. This, in turn, is down to a level of blistering contempt for humans in general and one's audience in particular, combined with a smug and clearly over-inflated sense of the writer's own superiority, that leaves me continually amazed when I turn to the credits page of Aberrant: Project Utopia and don't see even a "special thanks" credit for Justin Achilli.

"It's entirely possible that Utopia funds this site privately and I'm being paid under the table for saying all this. Happy spook-hunting, losers." There are only two automatic reasons not to treat this as a sarcastic confession:
    1) they don't need to pay him to sing the praises of Utopia, any more than the American Eagle Party needs to pay Bruce Tinsley to push their official flannel in "Mallard Fillmore";
    2) if they were paying him, they'd spring for some etiquette lessons once they actually read his output.
