I always like how there are FAQ before any questions are asked >> Anyway, if you have a question check here first before asking a mod! It may already be answered~ And if you do have a question, please just leave a comment here and we'll get back to you ASAP!

→ GENERAL QUESTIONS
✗ What does "Adstringéndum" mean?
It means "compression" in Latin.
✗ Are there just two mods running it right now?
Yup, just Freya and Kevin for now.
✗ What happens if a mod goes on hiatus?
The game will continue as usual under the supervision of the other mod. If BOTH go on hiatus, we trust you to be good ^.~

→ APPLYING AND APPLICATIONS
✗ Is there a way for me to reserve a character?
Yes! You can reserve any character you wish to play that is NOT on the taken page here. Please note you can only reserve one character at a time :)
✗ The character I want to play is on the taken page. Now what?
Well, we encourage you to join with another character! Who knows? If the character you wanted drops, you're more than welcome to pick them up.
✗ I see some really long applications. Do I need to have 5 comments worth to get in?
No, you don't. You will also see we approve some shorter applications as well. What is most important is that you show that you understand the character and can write well. Being wordy or not is more of a stylistic thing, though longer applications do tend to have more info packed in.
✗ Can I apply for more than one character from the same series?
Yes! Provided that the characters are not too closely related. As an example, Freya-mod dropped Rangiku from Bleach when she decided she was better off with playing Gin. Playing them both would be talking to yourself half the time, since they share such a history. Please keep things like this in mind!
✗ Can I apply for a duplicate of a character?
No, we're not taking duplicates.
✗ What if they're from another series?
This does happen. Clamp, for example, has its crossover series Tsubasa. You can apply for that duplicate only if they have a different history and story-line than the first. For example - we have two Kamui's, but one is from X and one is from Tsubasa. They are different enough to be considered two different characters.
✗ Does my character have to be human?
No, they do not.
✗ What if I want to app a spirit or a ghost? Would that be the same as an Animus?
If you want to apply as a spirit being, you are more than welcome to. However, they will be visible to other characters. An example of this would be the Bleach Shinigami, who in this game still can do what they do, but they are solid forms.

It would not be the same as an Animus, who are spirit beings but from a separate dimension. They hold a lot of power over events in the game and we would like to keep them separate from other spiritual beings, too.
✗ I want to apply with an Original Character as my first muse. Can I do this?
No, sorry. It's not because we want to stifle creativity, but to try and keep down the much feared Mary Sue/Gary Stus from popping up, we ask that you apply with a canon character first so we can make sure that you are active and committed before apping an OC.
✗ I think the mods missed my app...
THEN WE ARE DUMD DX Please send us a message! But remember, if there's a whole bunch of apps around yours then we haven't checked them either. We try not to overlook any, so please let us know.
✗ How often do you go over applications?
We try to go over apps once a week, usually in the middle of the week. So if you don't get a response right away, don't worry! We still see it.
✗ Can I just link to a wikipedia background page?
No. We know backgrounds aren't the most enjoyable parts of the applying process, but we do think it shows that you know the history of the character. You can use other sites for reference, of course, but don't just copy and paste.

→ ACTIVITY AND ACTIVITY CHECKS
✗ When do you do activity checks?
Once a month, usually at the beginning of the following month. For example, the activity check for June is often posted at the beginning of July. They generally last one week.
✗ What happens if I'm on the activity check?
We put your name on a list and tell you that you haven't updated your journal. If you see yourself, you simply update your journal and let us know that you did so. We'll take you off the list. However, you are asked not to apply for any character for one week after you have cleared the check.
✗ What if I'm on the activity check more than once?
Three strikes and you're out. So please remember to update! We want to have a lively, active community.
✗ What if I'm on hiatus and miss an activity check/my second post for that month?
If you're going on a hiatus, let us know! Post in the OOC community and we'll take a note of it. If you're on hiatus you will be exempt from one activity check. However, some hiatus have been lasting months on end...
✗ What if I'm on hiatus for more than one month?
We ask that your hiatuses don't last more than one month if it's possible to control. Being inactive for a few months and holding onto that character isn't fair to the people that interact with them and others who would like to app them. But, we know that some things in real life are just uncontrollable. If you let us know you're on hiatus and one month passes, if it's possible please just check in with us and let us know what is going on. If you have a good reason, we will extend your hiatus for another month.

Eventually, being on a continuous hiatus will mean forfeiting your character ): It's not that we want to be mean, but if you're not around to roleplay, there's no sense in having the character. You're welcome to apply again if/when you're able to come back :)

→ IN-GAME QUESTIONS
✗ How does my character get here?
Well, each world is being compressed into one, and it may not all happen at once! So when your character is brought here, it is literally like hitting a wall, and getting knocked out, then waking up in the WTF world we call Adstringéndum :) They will end up in the Safezone, and after that can run around wherever they want at their own discretion.
✗ What are the areas of the world called?
The world is divided into two main zones. Currently, a roughly 20 mile zone around The Equator is called the "Safezone" and is habitable to live in. Work is constantly done to expand the Safezone to allow for more people to reside there as people filter in. The rest of the world is generally called the "Wastelands," due to its devastated state. Also, due to the compression, there are beasts of all shapes and sizes that roam the wastes, so it's a very "enter at your own risk" situation.
✗ Who are the "Animus"? What do they do?
The Animus are spirits, essentially, as it means "spirit" in Latin. Not just human souls, but ethereal beings that existed in the Spirit World. As their world compressed with the other physical realities, they became stuck in the makeup, unable to take form or truly interact with the environment as they normally could.

So, they are quite cranky. They will take advantage of you if you're in an out of body, spirit form. (This means if you die, not like Shinigami and whatnot). And since they cannot interact with the world itself, they take out their anger on the people. If they work hard enough, they can take away your voice, to making you change your genetic make-up for a period of time. It really depends on how they feel like showing their disdain. The Project constantly tries to see if there is a way to stop them from involving themselves, but so far nothing has worked, if not only angered them further.
✗ Is there a way out?
Good question! So far, no. There is no "out" to be had as all the worlds squish together, meaning there will be only one time and place. Once the compression is complete, the Project speculates there may be no way back.
✗ So, is there like, a big scientific organization in charge of everything?
Not at the moment, no. However, that doesn't mean one can't develop. The Unified Universe Project is currently just doing what it can to make up for the big oops that they did when everything got screwed up. However, if your character wants to make a move forward with the Project or try and create their own sense of order, by all means go ahead! Just be sure to keep it in the not god-modding category, okie dokie?
✗ What about my powers? Can I use them here?
Yes, you can. There may be fluctuations in that ability as the Project tries to fix things, but in general you may. The mods will announce when powers are suddenly unattainable or enhanced, etc. Now, because you have your powers, we want you to BE RESPONSIBLE with them. Don't go blow up the place, please! As an explanation IC, we will say that the Project says the world is too fragile for that kind of stuff :3 Maybe later, we'll let you know.
✗ Sweet! I can use my powers, so now I can pwn everyone!
No, not necessarily :/ You can use your powers, but anything that has to do with altering time won't work here, sorry! This is time getting squished, after all. As for "my character is way stronger than yours" because they're from different series and have different abilites...well, that will happen, but there are consequences for using a lot of power here. The Safezone is the most stable, but the place as a whole is still being held together with like space duct tape. Going Super Saiyan gazillion will probably not only piss off the Animus and have them knock you into a pond of goo or something, but it may also cause a rip in the space time. That could completely change an area or even screw up your own abilities. Use them with caution.

So yes, you do have your abilities, but it is advised not to use them all to their limits. And if someone says "that's okay, my low power can keel you", while in some cases that may be true (like if Aizen from Bleach wanted to blow up Card Captor Sakura), we ask you to merely be nice to other players. You cannot control things that happen to someone else's character, so if you want to fight them without your full power for whatever reason, go ahead as long as you and the other player have discussed things. Just don't blow up the world, mmkay? For character death, see below.
✗ What happens if I die here?
Another good question! Hopefully you won't, but it's entirely possible. What will happen is you'll be sent back, since the spirit world has been compressed with the "real" world as well. However, your soul will enter your body as is, so you may be in a lot of pain when you come back depending on how you died. If you got blown to pieces, they will just come back together. The Project isn't sure exactly why this is happening. However, there may be consequences for dying other than just pain. The Animus don't like people coming into their spiritual state, especially while they're already upset, so they may just take something away from you while you're in your spirit form, be it a possession, memory, or ability. You can be dead for the period of time you want for your character, be it an hour to a week or more, but you will eventually have to come.

hm I have a question: me and my friend usually RP like this: we post to journal in journal style but in the comments we tend to use action base. this is because the characters we RP are twins and are always together, so it would be awkward to assume they only talked through the communicators and it would also be bothersome to log every single action. If we see there's going to be a lot of action like, for example, a battle or something we post in the logs. We also log if we want to meet with other characters, etc.
So my question is if this form of roleplaying is okay with you? Because we had a bad experience in the past and we want to be sure you guys won't mind this.

I'm assuming you're referring to action commenting/spamming with your question, so I'll answer it as such. If I'm off, feel free to say so. ^^

We have no issue with action commenting, so long as it's not overly abused. Day-to-day actions are fine, but as you said, battles and other major events are suited to full logs outside of the character journals. It's also recommended that if you have an event that you specifically want others to see/know about and want to take care of the log via comments, you should use the log comm for that.

Does that clear things up?

Yep that's it.

Hm yes, that's what I meant. If I know there are going to be some major events like battles, or if the characters decide to do things with other characters like shopping, cooking, etc that will be posted in the logs of course.

Thanks :p

In regards to housing, are there buildings set aside for people to live in (such as safe houses, organized shelters, etc.) or are there just abandoned buildings people are free to live in?

Also how about general locations and money? I'm assuming there are operational stores (and other places such as restaurants/bars) around the town? If that's the case, is there a set currency or is any form of currency accepted?

Though on the other side, would it be safe to assume there are abandoned stores and such that can be looted for supplies?

Sorry for all the questions. ^^;;

And sorry, one more question. ^^;

Are obviously non-human characters allowed in the RP? I guess examples would be some of the races from Warcraft (Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, Foresaken/Undead, etc.) or even sentient Pokemon (such as Mewtwo and Lucario).

HO SHIT O.o Didn't get any notifications for these, I am SO SORRY!

In general there are abandoned buildings for everyone to live in. People can choose where they want to stay, though current events say that the Project is trying to get together a building force to help renovate an area to make it more inhabitable inside the Safezone.

Money doesn't exist ATM. It may at a later time, but we haven't worked that out yet. When more of the city is renovated, that will be come an issue. We'll get back to you on that :)

Yes, you can loot whatever you feel like for supplies. If you run out of food, feel free to hunt in the wastelands for tasty monsters!

And yes again, non-human characters can be apped.

Thank You! I actually have a few more question - what about water there? Is there running water in the houses/buildings? Is there gas (sorry, has no idea how it's called - to cook)? Or do they have to find a really old stove and search for something flammable in order to prepare meal?
I just want to make sure ;)

There is water down in the sewers, and in old fountains and probably backed up in old plumbing and whatnot, and there's rain water, but no running system. Things like gas, electricity and running water are things that the charas will probably need to ban together and fix themselves :)

I have a question. If one is considering a character that is, in fact, a ghost in canon, would they be forced into the role of animus in game? Or if they were a ghost that was able to manifest in the living world anyway, would they essentially stay the same?

Thanks. :D

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]adstrngndummod
2008-04-24 03:34 am UTC (link)
The Animus aren't like ghosts, per say, since they've never actually lived or died, but are a separate type of spiritual entity all together. If we're talking ghost as in someone that died and has passed on, then they would either be brought back to life - like L in Death Note - or like the Bleach Shinigami, they would be able to be seen by all, but they are still Shinigami and have all their abilities.

Does that help at all? Or what kind of ghost are we talking about?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]aceles
2008-04-29 03:23 am UTC (link)
The ghost is a character named Reika Kuze from Fatal Frame 3. She's been dead and wandering in a dream/haunting a house for over a hundred years. She is imbued with certain powers and abilities due to her position as a tattoo priestess and her participation in a sacrificial ritual, and because she released the darkness of the spirit world (called the 'rift') on everyone in the mansion/shrine when the sacrifice went wrong. So she's a big bad in many respects, but she has been a ghost for some time. I'm thinking more like Shinigami, however.

[info]adstrngndummod

In her case, then, she should retain whatever abilities she had as a ghost, but would be able to be physically seen, as the way we're going with it with all the different levels of reality and dimensions and whatnot are all compressed into one, everyone can have access to different planes of existence where they once couldn't :) Does that help?

I was wondering if it's alright to have two of the same character from different worlds.

Take for instance Kamui from X/1999, he also appears in Tsubasa chronicles.
However it's an AU version of him.

My stance with that is that if the background is totally different, then it should be considered a separate character. I haven't read Tsubasa, but from what I know like, Sakura and Li are completely different from Card Captor, so they could be considered characters apart from their original series. Things like Kingdom Hearts and Disney would be a no - Disney charas have the same history and whatnot, so you cannot app two different versions - or Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy.

Does that help?

How much in canon do you want characters to be? Such as well... I have a Squall muse who has a fairly good solid background in with the Final Fantasy VIII game history until the "time compression" in which he's thrown into the future and becomes the leader of SeeD (of his own will) who well... all sooner or later get exterminated by Ultimecia before going to the Island where he's saved by Rinoa and time "resumes" as normal.

I'm just wondering at the moment. If you don't really like this, I suppose I can apply for a more canon-related Squall or a different character entirely.

We expect canon characters to have their canon backgrounds. The exception to this would be where there are holes in their history, it is up to the players discretion to reasonably fill in the blanks :)

-nods- Right. Well... thank you for the prompt answer. Time Compression in FF8 is fickle and is a great plot device. ^_^;

Basically, I just used this as an excuse to make my Squall muse more mature (and maybe a bit more open; a tad more like his Kingdom Hearts Leon incarnate) and older.

So... I assume this is a go-ahead and apply with this muse?

Also, what is the view of Guardian Forces (Summon "Monsters/Deities") in this game? Can they be in use by having them be junctioned to the character and (in Squall's case) so the character could use some magic (although Squall would use it more sparingly since well... there's no known draw points right now...)? I can play without them. I'm just curious about it. Thank you!

If you want Squall to come from an older, later time, mmm, we would prefer that you take him from the latest time possible. I'll talk to Kevin once he gets on, though, and we'll give you a final answer.

Technically they're part of his abilities as a SeeD, so yes, he could use Guardian Forces~

[info]mercy_slays
2008-05-09 08:52 pm UTC (link)
Well... I was thinking more of the lines that rather then him being saved by Rinoa, he's actually taken straight from the island and into the game after going through the motions of what I mentioned above (him being the Leader of the soon-to-be exterminated SeeDs). The amount of time he spent as that leader is roughly 7 years before Time Compression whisks him off to the island.

Would their be a limit of how many GFs he can have? Could I have like... small mental interactions/conversations in Squall's head with a GF?

2008-05-12 03:34 am UTC (link)
*jumps in* Alright, so, what I've gathered from reading your comments is that you want to take Squall from a certain point in the game, but tweak the canon of the game to allow for other things. I'm going to be blunt and say this could potentially cause problems I'd rather not deal with, because they have the potential to get very messy.

Basically, if you want to play Squall from point A, you need to use the personality he has at point A. If you want his personality from point B, you'll have to play him from where the canon is at point B. You can't go mixing and matching different points.

As for the GFs, I'll leave that to Freya, since I've never played the game.

Just to clear things out before I app, how are characters affected when, for example, there are already characters from the same fandom/universe in the game, and I want to app someone from a future timeline? [I could always app from where they left off, but I just wanted to know :3;;]

Well, since this is about time compression, it makes perfect sense that not everyone would be from the same time! They will probably be surprised and not know anything from the future, but it doesn't exactly change any of the existing characters. It's up to the muns in how they react, but you're more than welcome to app from any point in the timeline.

*troublesome mun-to-be is troublesome*

Okay, I've got a question. I'm not sure whether or not you're familiar with Shaman King, but the thing is that I'm considering applying for a character from that series and (as the title of the series suggests ^^;;) he's a shaman, so I was wondering if I'm allowed to bring his spirit ally (in other words, a ghosts he's using to fight) with him.

Maybe I'll describe the whole thing more clearly ^^;;

After they met, they became quite close friends and the mentioned shaman carries his spirit ally everywhere around in a mortuary tablet. He mainly uses the ghost to create Over Soul (a shamanic technique) he fights with or to perform Hyoi Gattai (basically, it means he merges with a spirit and thus gains, for example, its movements).

Hopefully, it gives you the general idea about their relationship ^^ On the side note, usually when I apply for a shaman, I am asked to provide a shot background and personality description of their spirit ally. Plus, I highly recommend that manga XDD

Yes, of course.^^
Well... I don't know if you know Grandia II, but there was the classical fight good vs. evil, and the evil god was divided into several parts. The church tries to seal those parts away, but one of the ceremonies fails, and a girl, who works at the church, is now possessed by one of the parts. This 'part' has it's own personallity: a willful, seducing woman. That's the character I would want to play. She appears not always, though, but only if the original owner of the body faints or goes to sleep. Or if they know they need the powers of that woman to seal other parts of the evil god away.
And while the girl is a very innocent and pure one, the woman can get pretty evil and cold.

Does the moon(s) still go through it's lunar cycle despite the fact we can't see it? It is a fairly important question for lycanthropes and various other wolf-type things.

I would say no. Considering it's a bunch of different worlds getting switched back and forth, sometimes there would be no moon, sometimes many, at different points in their cycle. So if there are characters affected by a full moon and whatnot, it would be at random.
