We need GMs!

If you're planning on attending, please consider GMing too! :)
And if you're not planning on attending, well, tell you friends... And come anyway! :D

If you wish to GM at the con for a game other than Amber, go ahead and submit a game as well. It doesn't have to be diceless or even Amber (although it is preferred and most games being run there will be).
For instance, two of our current GMs plan on running a Serenity (Firefly) game based on the Amber Diceless rules.

Check out http://fabienbadilla.com/acaz-events.html for more info about how to submit a game and make AmberCon Arizona an awesome and recurring event.

And most of all: Come have fun!

Here's the information you can get on the website about game submittal:

If you wish to run a game at the upcoming CopperCon 28, use the following format and email us at AmberConArizona@gmail.com with Game Submittal in the title.

Also, feel free to create a new thread pertaining to your game HERE!

Required information for Game Submittal:

Time Slot Preferred (see below)

Genre (Will it be a traditional Amber game?
I'm mourning Erick myself; he was a friend to me as well as a fellow gamer, and I miss him deeply. However, I should really post this now that we've confirmed it, and in a way the timing is appropriate because he valued the Amber community so highly:

The dates for Ambercon US 2009 will be April 16-19, 2009, at the Embassy Suites Livonia. (We'll have the dates for 2010 shortly; yes, we're going to start working two years out.)

This will be the 20th Ambercon, and we're looking for ideas to commemorate both the anniversary and Erick, without whom none of this would have happened. Please feel free to email me; even ideas that require a bit of money are possible.

More details later, but I wanted to get the dates out there so people can start planning. If you're on other Amber-related lists or communities that I don't reach, please pass this on to them (and let me know about them).

-- Joe Saul (Chair, Ambercon US 2009)

AmberCon Arizona Zero at CopperCon 28

Hello everyone!

AmberCon Arizona will be hosted as part of the CopperCon 28 Gaming programming!
This is going down from Thursday August 28th through Sunday August 31st 2008. The location is Embassy Suites Scottsdale (which is still technically in Phoenix, Arizona, by the way :P ). Gaming will begin Thursday at 6pm and end on Sunday at 3pm.

Gaming will be hosted in the CopperCon Gaming room, which will be open 24hours.
Because this year we are running events as part of CopperCon 28, only a membership to that con is necessary to come play and run games, as well as enjoy all other programming that CopperCon has to offer this year. Our aim this year is to raise awareness of AmberCon and the ADRPG within the Arizona community. We are expecting to be a stand alone convention for next year. Please visit their website for membership pricing and additional information about the con. You can find it at http://www.casfs.org/cucon/

If there are GMs interested in running a game or if you wish to host games in 2-room suites rather than the common gaming room, feel free to contact me on LJ or via email AmberConArizona@gmail.com so that I can organize room-sharing, game submissions, etc... (I was quoted at $139.99 per night for two room suites, including two queen beds, and a separate living room- in other words, 4 adults).

Come host or join a game, support the ADRPG community in Arizona and come have some diceless fun! There is a special rewards program for GMs... More details to come about that.

For more information and Game Submittal information, please visit http://fabienbadilla.com/AmberConArizona-Main.html
And the AmberCon Arizona Forum at http://amberconarizona.theiforum.com/

Thanks for your interest and support!

A snow day! I can use this to catch up on my prep for the con! Not that I was really behind, but I was certainly feeling the deadline coming at me headlong. :-)

And while I've got your attention, we have one last committee meeting before the convention. We call it the "Welcome Pack Stuffing". This is where we put all the name badges, player and GM info, and important stuff like that, into the nifty page protectors. This takes a decent amount of time, but the more hands to help, the quicker it can be finished. So, if you are local to S.E. Lower MI, near Ann Arbor to be more specific, and have some free time this Friday, March 7th around 7 P.M. and would like to help with Ambercon in some way, this would be an ideal place to start. If interested, send an email to conchair@ambercon.com and we'll get you the rest of the details.

The Ambercon 2008 registration deadline is this Sunday, January 27 - less than a week away! After the 27th there is a $10 late fee to register. Also, only those who have registered and paid can make game selections. For more information, or to register online, go to the Ambercon web site.

We could still use 2-3 games in slot 3, and one more in slot 6. So if you were thinking of running something, we'd appreciate the help in those slots. Games can be submitted online via the Ambercon web site.

Also, don't forget that the Ambercon Graphic Design Contest deadline is March 3. Your artwork could be what everyone sees on Ambercon's web page and t-shirts next year! Not to mention the $100 prize. You do not need to be attending Ambercon to enter. Please see the PDF on the Ambercon web site for more information.

Hope to see you in March!

This is a reminder that today (Jan. 6) is the deadline for submitting games for Ambercon 2008. If you've already submitted games, thank you! If you haven't, time is running out. We are still short on games in all slots (we have only 20% of the games we need, in fact), so please, send us your games! Don't forget, running games improves your scheduling priority when it comes time to pick what games you get into, and running four or more slots will earn you an extra $20 worth of food certificates.

Submit games.
Register.

Hope to see you all at the Con!

The Road to Amber (MUSH)

The Evil Hat crew, whom AmberCon NW attendees may remember for our LARPs,
and others may know from our non-Amber games
(FATE,
Spirit of the Century,
etc.), has just started running an online Amber campaign in the form of a MUSH.
Called The Road to Amber,
it's set at the end of The Guns of Avalon.

Chaos has attacked and been repelled by the guns of Avalon, but
Amber's rule, claimed by Corwin, remains in contention. Dara has
walked the Pattern and proclaimed that "Amber will be destroyed!" And
though a Death Curse remains poised to strike, Eric has not delivered
it; spending his life force, leaching it away into the Jewel of
Judgment, he is a shattered man, bedridden and soon to die -- a
state's hero in repose.

The reconciliation between Eric and Corwin, if it exists, is not a
public affair -- yet. Speculation abounds, and the Regency still
technically remains in Eric's name, though Corwin carries out its
duties as fits the popular consensus. It is rumored Eric seeks to name
an Heir before he passes with his Curse on his lips -- and at any rate
it is certain that that heir is not yet his brother Corwin, for we
would have heard of it by now.

And what of Amber herself -- the city, the lands, and Arden beyond? In
many places it is a smoking ruin, a warzone gone dormant. Civil unrest
is common, and fear touches the eyes of those who walk the
streets. War is not a clean thing, and Chaos was not repelled cleanly;
agents within the city abound, cloaked and daggered, while fresh
horrors worse than any of shadow now stalk the wilds. Julian's armor
tarnishes further each day with a new ichor of some dire Chaotic
beast.

But even with the uniting influence of a common foe, Amber's native
politics remain heated as always. The fresh ravages of war have put
strains on Amber's noble Houses like none other in recent memory; in
some cases, Houses squabble viciously over the scraps of once-whole
things. And with the Regency in quiet contention, the old balance of
power -- once respected by Eric (though some would say he played it
like a fiddle) -- is poised for an upset in the face of Corwin's
brash, fresh, unconventional ideas.

Read more about the game on its
wiki, or come check us out at
roadtoamber.com 6250!

We're looking for players -- veterans and players new to MUSHing alike
are welcome. We promise you that it's not a huge time commitment
(we're all adults with jobs and families and lives), and we promise
we've got some fresh twists on Amber DRPG-inspired gaming...

Behind the cuts you will find an overview of the game as well as a description of the minimum expected in a request to join.

Game Overview
For over a decade, I've been developing an epic continuation of Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. The full story unfolds over the course of five acts, each of which represents a discrete story-arc in its own right. The first act, The Real Story, approximately coincides with the latter half of the Merlin novels and subsequent acts will begin when certain conditions are met in play, through either the action or inaction of the characters.

The Real Story revolves around illuminating the mysteries behind Patternfall. The second act, Forbidden Knowledge, follows the search for various means to affect or survive the coming struggle. The third act, A Dark and Hungry God Arises, sees certain ancient powers come loose and the struggle joined. The fourth act, Chaos and Order, offers a respite as the cosmic powers gather what remains of their power for the final conflict. The final act, This Day All Gods Die, will bring the game (and perhaps the Amber universe) to a decisive end.

Characters may possess Amber, Chaos or mixed parentage, and proposals may be entertained for rarer breeds such as Shroudlings, Demons and Mythical Beasts. Multiple characters may be permitted, should the number of players prove insufficient to adequately populate the various poles. The FATE 3.0 engine, largely as described in Spirit of the Century but with some minor changes, is our rules set. Should the majority of players prefer it, a diceless variant will be prepared.

Zelazny's ten Amber novels and five Amber short stories are all considered canon, though each reflects their protagonists' personal biases. Portions of Neil Randall's Visual Guide to Castle Amber, Theodore Krulik's Complete Amber Sourcebook and John Gregory Betancourt's Dawn of Amber prequel novels may be canon also, and all such portions that would be known to a particular character will be disclosed. The interpretations of the various Powers presented in Amber Diceless Roleplay are not wholly canon.

Requests To Join
First, a caveat to anyone who may be considering an RTJ: this is definitely a long-term game, one which conceivably could require several years of play to bring to its conclusion. Please ask yourself seriously whether you can manage, at a minimum, a commitment of six months. If not, this may not be the game for you. Now on to what I would like to see in an RTJ:

About You
Please begin with a short summary of your gaming experience, both online and off. Include how long you have been roleplaying, how familiar you are with the Amber novels, how often you generally post when playing, your favorite game systems and settings, any hobbies or areas of expertise you possess which may potentially prove of benefit in a roleplaying context, what types of characters you most enjoy playing and, finally, what type of player you consider yourself.

I recommend the seven types outlined in Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering. Should you feel inadequate to this level of self-analysis, please take this quiz and note your percentages when you submit your RTJ. The author of the quiz apparently felt that Method Actor and Butt-Kicker carried negative connotations, and respectively renamed them Character Player and Weekend Warrior. The results are pretty much identical, however; no need for concern.

Three Concepts
Continue with a trio of brief character concepts, no more than a few paragraphs for each. Focus on the character's personality, motivations, heritage, relationships, signature items and any opportunities he or she has had. Thinking in terms of FATE Aspects can be helpful, but do not feel constrained to that model should you not be able to wrap your head around it immediately. Aspects tend to suggest themselves, when a character concept is well-developed.

You might also pen each concept in the form of a hundred-word narrative a la HeroQuest as an alternative, should you feel stuck. This limit may seem arbitrary and rather small initially, but the process of honing your concept down to one hundred words forces you to choose what is most important to you about the character. Focus on the things that excite you about possibly playing the character, and you will do just fine. (Examples available here and here.)

Amber Notes
Close with a few thoughts regarding what you most enjoy about the Amber novels, and why. Include your favorite characters, which parts of the tale most surprised and delighted you, what questions about the novels continue to haunt you, and so on. Also touch on what it is about the Amber universe that most makes you want to roleplay in it. Feel free to let it all hang out here and write to your heart's content. Show me your inner Amber fanboy or -girl. :)

The deadline for registering for The Black Road 2007 is coming up on April 23rd, which is just three weeks from today. Our GMs have already begun submitting another fine mix of Amber and indie games for this year's convention, and we'd love to have you join us June 29-July 1 at the Embassy Suites Marlborough in Marlborough, MA (near Boston).

If you're planning on attending, but haven't gotten around to registering yet, now's the time to head over the our website and take care of it. And if you've got friends you think might enjoy The Black Road, now's the time to do your best to talk them into coming.

Also, a few more GMs wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Michael
TBR con chair
http://www.theblackroad.com

Upcoming Ambercon deadlines

Just a reminder that the Ambercon game selection deadline is less than a week from today - February 16th at 11:59pm PST for online submissions, and by 5pm for mail submissions. This is a hard deadline - meaning we have to have received selections by this date, even those that were sent in by postal mail. This is because we schedule the games on Saturday, February 17th. Game selections received after the 16th will be scheduled into whatever games are still open at that point. If you are having problems submitting your selections, or if you actually have already made your game selections, please let us know. If you haven't paid yet, don't forget you will need to send us your payment via PayPal or check before you can schedule your games. Once we receive your payment, you should be able to use the online game selection form.

The deadline for ordering t-shirts is also February 16th. If you planned to order a t-shirt and haven't yet, you have until then to place your order.

The Ambercon 2007 Graphic Design Contest deadline is February 16th as well. Your artwork could be what everyone sees on Ambercon's web page and t-shirts next year! Not to mention the $100 prize. You do not need to be attending Ambercon to enter. Please see the PDF on the Ambercon web site for more information.

The deadline for reserving a hotel room at the Ambercon rates is February 19th, less than two weeks from today. So if you haven't reserved your room yet, be sure to do so as soon as possible (our group code is AMB).

If you'd like assistance in finding someone to share a ride to or from the hotel, please contact the Rides Coordinator (rides@ambercon.com) by March 15th with your travel information.
