I found a cat

  • Jul. 16th, 2009 at 12:10 PM
I think the cat is female. My friend actually found her and said she was hungry and kept trying to enter his house. I told him to bring her over since I'm a sucker for animals. I've had her for maybe 2 days now. I bought cat food and feed her twice a day. I've given her a bath and she spends most of her time in a dog cage, since my dogs go wild if she's out and about.

I can't keep her, since my sister is allergic, and my mom says no. But I am taking care of her til I can find a good home.

I would like some tips in finding a new owner for her, as well as additional care. I might have to take her to the spca soon. But I don't want to do that since there is a high possibility that she will be euthanized.

Also, she limps on her right leg. I'd like to take her to a vet for a checkup, but I don't know how much that would cost. Would anyone know the price of a vet checkup for a cat?

Do any of you guys know how much does it cost to get a 501 (c) 3? About how long does it take?

Two of my co-workers and I do a lot of rescue work and also foster for other rescues. We work at an animal hospital and for years we've taken in animals that have been abandoned or surrendered, recently we decided to make it official and start an actual rescue organization to be able to hold adoption events and take in donations (most of the money used in the animals we've helped in the past has come out of our own pockets). We already started a website (http://pawsandtailsrescue.org) and have had better luck finding homes for our animals than before :) I'd love to get any information or advise from you guys that know more about it, thanks in advance!
an update from the wynne animal rescue shelter, in AR: www.wynnefoa.com

Everybody meet Remington... he's a pointer mix, weighs 54lbs and he's AWESOME. He's about 2 yrs old and heartworm positive. He is at the very start of his treatment and we really need sponsors to help pay for this expensive and trying treatment. This is the only hope he has to save his life.

Remington is looking for a quiet home where he's a house dog. He can handle energetic dogs as long as he has a quiet shady spot to nap in. He's very laid back but loves attention and is very loyal. More details and pictures on his petfinder page here: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=13632128

Please let me know if you can help us save remington and find him a home! Or check out some of the other 10 or so dogs we have living in our shelter who need sponsors for heartworm treatment - look at Indigo, Izac, Remington, Kiba, Lillith, Carley, Master Chief, Tatiana, Hercules, Gabriel and little Venice.
You can view them all from our adoptable pet list at www.wynnefoa.com

We have dogs in 32 states so please don't think you are too far to help remington find a home. We have LOTS of transport options available!

6 week old puppy needs a home

  • Jun. 28th, 2009 at 8:57 AM
I work for a shelter in wynne, arkansas (www.wynnefoa.com). We are no kill, and we are BEYOND full. It is puppy season, and we are in a rural community where nobody can afford to, or cares to spay and neuter their pets. I received an email today from a girl who has an aprx 6 week old female puppy - here is the text of the email
--

There is a stray dog in my neighborhood that had pups probably about 6 weeks ago. I have not seen the mother dog in about 3 to 4 days. This morning I found one of the pups howling in the yard across the street. The mother still did not come around, which is unusual, she is a good momma. I am afraid something bad has happened to her. I brought the puppy in and gave her water and puppy food, I also bathed her. I can't keep her as much as I would like to. I already have 2 dogs and can't afford another Vet. bill. Can you take this pup and where can I bring her?

---

The picture is a blurry cellphone pic. It looks like a baby yellow lab to me...

At the shelter we have to prioritize pulling dogs from the city kill pound. And as it is overflowing, we don't have room to take this puppy. However, if I can find a home interested, or a rescue, or even a foster, we will take this pup. We will do everything we normally do with an adoption - this means full vetting (all shots, frontline, heartguard, worming, spay and microchip). If you are interested, I can get the puppy up to the shelter and take better pictures, get her weighed and more details etc.

We are located in Wynne, Arkansas but we have many transport options available. Please comment here or email me at sadistic.crayon@gmail.com if you can help us help this little girl!

Happy Endings ...

  • Jun. 14th, 2009 at 4:18 PM
I wanted to share a happy ending story really quick.

A few weeks ago - i posted a desperate plea for someone to take a sweet but shy adult black cat named Beyonce with a food allergy that gives her a very unattractive rodent Ulcer. I am a Director at the wynne friends of animals shelter in wynne arkansas, (www.wynnefoa.com) and we have a small cat population. We were simply unable to care for Beyonce's condition with the food trials and vet care it required. But in a home, this ulcer should be easy to treat! But Beyonce had been with us months and nobody had showed any interest. We are as close to truly no-kill as we can be. Animals that are vicious we attempt to work with. It is VERY rare we put an animal down due to aggression. Health issues that make an animal 'unadoptable' are usually only things that are untreatable... but there was talk of listing poor Beyonce as unadoptable.

I posted here desperate to save her life and we were blessed with a Miracle. We were contacted by a lady who saw this post.

Beyonce is now living in MA - we transported her 1500 miles over the weekend (our first cat transport!) to a lovely lovely couple who want to give her a forever home. They have the ability to provide the diet and treatments that Beyonce needs. They are currently trying to introduce her slowly to her other cat - and have promised us that if for some reason it doesn't work out they will find a suitable home for our cat. Right now everything is going so well, I think Beyonce will settle in great in her new home.

I've been in tears all week over this... I just could not believe how wonderfully and perfectly all this fell together.

It was one of those desperate cases which in my year of working at the shelter - do not ever seem to have happy endings. This ending was more than I could ask for for Beyonce, and I just wanted to share so bad. Beyonce probably would not have made it had this community not been here to facilitate Miracles!!!

So thanks to the community, and thank you Caitlin, if you read this for helping Beyonce.

Wanting a small rabbit in Mn/Wi area.

  • Jun. 9th, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Hi,
I have a Netherland Dwarf male rabbit. His companion, a spaid female dwarf mix, recently had to be put down. i'm looking for another companion for him. He's very lonely and needs someone else. I am blind and so cannot drive, but i'd be willing to pay someone a little extra to drive a rabbit here. I live in the northern part of Minnesota. If you have a young nice rabbit, preferably one that's a year old or younger and a dwarf of some sort, or a small breed, that might be a suitable companion for him, please comment here, or email me at:
softy5310@hotmail.com
If you know anyone who has a small sweet rabbit who needs a home in this area, please pass this along to them.
Thanks,
Dawnielle

Staley.

  • Jun. 6th, 2009 at 5:52 PM
So, I'm sad to say that my step-sister and her husband are looking to rehome their gorgeous husky girl. Unfortunately, Staley has nipped their children twice now and they don't feel it's a safe option to keep her.

Description from my sister:

"She is 7 years old, totally house trained, purebred and spayed. She will require a fenced in yard and can NEVER be off a leash. She needs a home that has no other dogs or cats and children must be older than 6 with no plans for more children."

Addendum:

The dog is food protective.

My sister is willing to drive within 50 miles to a rescue.

Basically, my sister and her husband are wary about rehoming the dog themselves. They're afraid they won't have time to properly screen adopters, and they definitely don't want her to go to a bad home. What they're looking for is a good rescue that can screen for them or take the dog and adopt her out. If anyone knows of a good rescue in Maryland that could do such, it would be much appreciated.

My experience with Staley while being around her myself is that she is a very, very affectionate and loving dog. She's also pretty well trained and obedient, though she does have that typical husky stubborn streak to her here and there. My sister describes her as a fairly low maintenance dog.

If you have any information for me, please leave a comment or email me at darksong17[at]gmail.com and I will forward any information to my sister.

Loving Cats Need New Home Re-Posted

  • May. 31st, 2009 at 8:57 AM
I just recently moved to Louisiana leaving behind all that I love. I had a friend in Georgia volunteer to take care of my cats until I could bring them out here. Unfortunately, it looks like they will be needing new homes as she can no longer take care of them. Plus, I am not going to have a home here for them for quite some time. I tried some adoption agencies back in October when I was first moving, but they were full. It is in the boys' best interest to go to homes personally, I feel.
One of the cats is a gray, slightly chubby cat who is very loving. He can be tempermental, but only if there are so many cats around, he really should go to a home where he might be the only cat, or one of two. He is fixed and his name is Scramble, feel free to rename him though, I just want him to have a loving, safe home. Scramble is about 2-3 years old.

The other one is a black cat with a pastor type white mark on his neck, and his name is Loki. He is almost a year old, and very sweet. While he can be mischievious, he is also loving, and known to sleep beside you if you want him to. He isn't fixed, but hasn't become aggressive as some cats who aren't fixed can be. I think he would do well in a one animal home or multi-animal home as he is younger.

If anyone in the Atlanta, Georgia area is interested or knows of an adoption agency with a no-kill policy please comment here. Thanks! I would be very greatful to find them both homes, or you can keep them together. I will post photos as soon as possible, but for right now there are only the descriptions. I tried some no-kill shelters already and they are full or not accepting since it is kitten season, if anyone can help, it would be great thanks. And yes, I have the list of shelters already.

Jake

  • May. 26th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Jake lives in Maine and needs a home. The people who took him in got him because he was frequently running around our neighborhood and had no fear of vehicles. He was never tied up and when there was a rabid raccoon caught in the neighborhood a wildlife rehabilitator who lives nearby went to check that Jake was up to date on his shots since he was so often roaming free. Jake's owner said "Fine, just take the dog. I don't want him anyway."

He's a corgi/chow mix. He's all black. He's about 9 years old, but he definitely has a lot of energy!

The problem is living with the wildlife rehabilitator he's not getting the attention he craves and deserves. He can't be in the rest of the house because her other dogs don't get along with him, and he can't often be let loose in the basement because of the various wild animals she has housed there. He spends a lot of time outside or in a crate.

I'd like to see him in a home where he can get the attention and care he deserves. And this wildlife rehabilitator goes above and beyond for so many animals, I'd like to help her take care of one of the babies on her plate...

I will get photos of him soon.

KITTEN IN LA NEEDS A HOME - TODAY!

  • May. 26th, 2009 at 2:30 PM

Click the picture for a bigger view.

This little kitty has had a very stressful night. His mother abandoned him in our yard last night and wasn't fed again until this afternoon. He is a very healthy little boy, with the cutest little face and blue eyes (kittens' eyes are blue when they first open until they fade into their natural color). I'm estimating that he's about two to three weeks old; he has NOT been weaned yet, but should be able to start eating soaked kitten food in the next week or so.

Should you accept this adorable little guy into your home, you're accepting full responsibility. Since he's a stray he hasn't seen a vet, and he will need shots and to be neutered at some point. Until he can defecate on his own you'll also have to stimulate that movement for him. You'll also be getting his little feed bottle and a container of feed mix so he can eat until he starts eating soaked kitten food.

This isn't a job for someone who isn't an extreme cat lover, but he's absolutely adorable and I'm positive he'll be a lovely pet. Though he is a stray kitten, he's young enough that he'll be very easy to acclimate to human interaction; he's already started recognizing and coming toward me, even, when he sees me.

He's a dark brown, very soft, and extremely sweet. I CAN'T KEEP HIM LONGER THAN TODAY. If you want him we must meet today and hand him over; if I can't find an owner for him he'll have to go to the pound and there's no guarantee that he'll live, since they aren't partial to unweaned kittens.

Please help this poor little guy out! If you're interested in taking him I'll take more photos of him; he finally fell asleep and I didn't want to wake him.

He woke up:

Beyonce... urgently needs a home!

  • May. 23rd, 2009 at 12:39 PM

Beyonce is a lovely black kitty cat with a few special needs which are making it very difficult for our shelter to continue to care for .
Her petfinder page with pictures is here: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12852843

Beyonce has been at the shelter since january, and we noticed when she first arrived she had a large very painful looking ulcer on her upper lip. Our vet said this was an allergic reaction, gave her a depo shot and it went away... only to return a few weeks later. She requires a special diet - our vet thinks she is allergic to chicken, and will need allergy shots the rest of her life.

Our resources for cats are limited - we primarily are a dog rescue shelter. We have an open room with small cages in which we can confine cats, but mostly our cats roam free and its essential they can all get along and share litter pans/food etc. We are struggling to find foods that she can eat to take down this reaction, and share with the other cats.

To add to her predicament, she is a black cat, which nobody seems to like :(  She also had ringworm when she arrived, which made it very difficult as during her 4 weeks of sulfur dips, she was unable to recieve a depo shot. Nobody has shown any interest locally, or on the internet. She's docile, timid around strangers but would make a great lap cat for an owner with the resources to provide her with the diet she needs and regular allergy shots. These are not expensive shots, just a commitment is all..

We normally do very well holding on to animals that seem like they're unadoptable till we find the right home but her illness is affecting the way our whole cat rescue operation runs and we are running out of options.

We are located in wynne, AR. But we will work with anyone, anywhere to get this cat to her forever home! PLEASE let us know if you could help us help Beyonce find her place...or suggest anywhere else we could turn for help, if you can't help us.!

Thanks for reading, please email with questions or suggestions - wynnefoa@yahoo.com, or call 870-238-9663.

Hello there

  • May. 19th, 2009 at 12:41 PM
hi there, I'm new & happy to find a community where the compassion towards homeless animals is shared. :)

This Saturday I'm picking up my new babies (brother & sister angoras) from a shelter that is about a 4 hour drive one way. I'm so excited to meet them & welcome them into their new home.
here's a couple of pictures of the new "kids". My boyfriend & i don't like human children what so ever, so these are our pseudo babies.

Update!!

to put it plain & simple, they are family ^_^
we love our new guys sooooo much! can't stop taking pictures of them, they were/are so much better in person!! the lady was not kidding when she said those pictures did not do them justice. we've had them for over a month now & every day has been so wonderful with them. they come wake us up in the morning, follow us around. so much life & personality!!

adopting rescues is the ONLY way to go in my opinion.
thanks petfinder.com!

here's a couple of my favorite pictures of them. they are so quirky :)

Animal Rescue

  • May. 18th, 2009 at 8:03 AM
My husband and I have developed the website Rescue Meow. It's currently taking up most of my free time, and I hope that it will always be a priority. This site is dedicated to all of our rescued pets; it's a blog which we hope (for the future) to use in the thought of connecting animals who desperately need homes to good and loving people. I ask that you please visit our site, tell your friends, send us stories, and keep us in mind. Photos are appreciated, but optional; no language or length restrictions. Write us to your heart's content!

Kittens in need of a home

  • May. 17th, 2009 at 11:06 PM
My friend rescued a cat who happened to be pregnant & now she has 4 kittens in need of good homes. They're only 3 weeks old right now but soon, they'll be ready to leave their mommy. She lives in KY. If anyone is interested, please let me know.
Here's the story...

I found a cat in the trash can where I work. I & many others believe he was put there. He was extremely emaciated. The trash can was too tall for him to crawl into. Anyway, regardless, there he was. His little ears damaged to a sickening point from ongoing ear mites & scratching.

I took him to the vet. He's been properly treated for fleas, ticks, heartworm, mites, lice & basically everything Revolution & vaccines can treat. He does NOT have feline leukemia, thank god. Unfortunately, his little ears will always look a little disfigured. He also has many teeth broken & missing from cat fights. The vet estimates Soda Bread is about 3 years old. He suffered from an extreme fever & some point in his life & had retinitis (where the eye has blue & purple). I'm not sure if it's caused brain damage or not. He has a lot of food anxiety. HE has NOT been fixed yet because he's still recovering. Also, he has not had rabies or distemper shots because the vet thought it should wait a while as well. Needless to say probably, litterbox trouble exists in my home. But that can easily be fixed once Soda gets neutered.

The real problem is, he needs a home probably free of other male cats. He needs a lot of love & time. I feed him twice a day away from my pets. HE is the biggest lover I have ever pet. He even purred on the vet table. The vet/vet techs were AMAZED at how sweet Soda Bread really is.

All I really ask is that if anyone wants him, I will require the money needed to neuter him & get the other 2 shots neccessary.
