| About: | Nursing is a learned art that used to be passed down from generation to generation, but since so many of the last generation did not breastfeed, this generation is left without mentors. That's where ![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/community.gif) adopt_a_mom comes in.
In the past a new mother had many experienced mothers around her to guide and encourage her in all aspects of motherhood, including breastfeeding. Unfortunately today, many mothers don’t breastfeed so there isn’t the abundance of experience and information readily available. Lack of information and encouragement are some of the biggest reasons that women decide to stop breastfeeding. adopt_a_mom has a solution.
adopt_a_mom is mothers who have “been there done that” when it comes to breastfeeding are volunteering their time to help out new moms on a one on one basis. There are many volunteer moms with a total of over 100 years of breastfeeding experience between them. We are here to give you honest real facts and support about breastfeeding.
If you're a new mom or a mom to be and are interested in being paired up with one of our experienced breastfeeders simply fill out one of our questionnaires (comments are screened and only viewable by the mentors in this community). The adoption list will be posted for mentors' viewing on the 1st and 15th of each month. If your situation is an urgent one and you have an immediate need for a mentor, please email the administrators, and you will be listed right away.

What is adopt_a_mom?
adopt_a_mom is a closed community where a select group of volunteers, mothers who have breastfed their own babies and educated themselves on the topic of breastfeeding, have come together to help teach new moms about breastfeeding. At adopt_a_mom you can ask for a breastfeeding mentor discreetly, without the embarrassment of a public post. At adopt_a_mom you get a mentor assigned to you, to help you out PERSONALLY, through email, instant messages and even phone calls if you so desire. adopt_a_mom is here to be your online support group.
What isn't adopt_a_mom?
adopt_a_mom is not a place where supplementing, pacifier use, CIO or any other non-AP type advice is given. This doesn't mean that if you don't co-sleep with your baby, we can't help you; we just offer the solutions to the best possible breastfeeding relationship.
